I reckon that the drums only version is much more intimidating to an enemy than with fife too. Imagine those elite soldiers of the Grenadier Guards, marching silently towards your lines with JUST booming drums beating. No battle cries, no fife, no trumpet, just the impending drums.
I’m not entirely sure about this but I don’t think they played music on the actual battlefield.. don’t quote me on that but I’m like, pretty sure they didn’t walk around drumming on the battlefield

This march perfectly encapsulates the might of the British Empire. I like to think of the higher pitched parts of the song as the navy, the ones who are far more romanticized and get the most credit for Britain’s military might, while the drums, when with the full ensemble of instruments are only subtly in the background, but it’s the boots on the ground, the war machine, that doesn’t get all the credit but is the muscle of the British Empire.
Been looking for a vid like this for agges, the pipes are all well and good but its towards the end with just the drums when you realise that all pomp and circumstance aside, the brits were a brutal force of nature and WILL go down as one of the greatest military forces in the annals of history

Far better with the fife playing as well - On the march and on the battlefield it was the fife and drum together and the effect is far better than the full orchjestration of modern military bands

There’s something in the power of those drums alone that’s purely awe inspiring. Rule Britannia!

Almost exactly why I made this myself
I’ve historically replayed the 12 seconds of drum only for hours, so this is nice.
