It’s the most civilized war ever was. But make no mistake they’ll kill you. The British land army for centuries was considered the best. It’s never a good idea to look at this type of combat with modern eyes or sensibilities. Try to think of what it took to march en bloc. The training required and balls of steel needed to stand like that under fire. Tremendous. These men fought and died for things bigger than themselves and paid honor to the sovereigns to die or live after such a battle. The drum and fife is needed to convert messages since yelling is void once the shooting starts. Drum and fife would call the men back from the bars at night or calls for dinner and really when marching for war. To hear the music is psychological warfare as well. You know the reputation, you know they are going to keep coming and once the shooting starts they are better at it. Had to be awful to face them in the open.
