Well, it's finally here - the Porsche 911 has gone Hybrid. Well, only one sub-variant has gone hybrid. The new 992.2 generation GTS model features a 1.9 kWh battery pack connected to two e-motors: one inside the PDK transmission, and the other inside the single turbocharger. Through an interesting combination of electricity and combustion, the package makes 532 horsepower and 449 lb/ft of torque, rocketing the GTS variants to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds, while returning more fuel efficiency (particularly at speed) and fewer emissions. Yes it adds weight, complexity and price, but how is it to drive?
Porsche provided airfare, lodging, track time, meals, the vehicle, insurance, and fuel for this review.

You're All Wrong for Hating the 911 Hybrid Without Driving It - TheSmokingTire
#911hybrid
#911GTShybrid - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I’m never worried that “the new 911” will be better than the last. It always is. My problem is that is best for old people who want to daily drive their 911, or people who want to track them. But as someone who just wants a cool experience driving back roads on the weekend, I actually want a “worse” car (by Porsche standards). I want lighter, harder shifts, more oversteer… Good news is, the cars that can do that are much cheaper than this is new. As usual, Porsche kills it. But I am over their perfection. It’s not interesting to me anymore. I’d rather take $200,000 and buy 3 or 4 older cars that will scratch all my different itches, none of which are “perfection.”
You nailed it! I drive an old S type Jaguar. Very fun to drive. Not as raw but such a sweet car to throw into bends at insane speeds. Not perfect in any way. But the car has a soul. That’s what gets me going. ❤
Are you homosexuality
The sound of the engine on the track sounds very monotone. I used to have a 718 S before getting my 992.1 Carrera T (with manual). This new GTS sounds almost 718 turbo 4-ish at speed. I know it's heresy to say it, but it just does. Has nothing to do with performance, which is obviously brilliant. I'm glad Matt leaked out he'd rather have a 911 S/T before slathering all the praise over the new model that everyone else is.
My MR two spider likes you
Exactly why I got a 991.1 GTS. It's by no means perfect, but it creates emotions. The NA sound, the rough gear shifts, the gearbox whine...Modern cars are too sterile.
It's funny that everyone was sooo worried about Porsche making a hybrid 911.. Come on, these guys just engineer excellence. Of course it's going to be awesome.
100%. AND they're using it to reverse trend of constant downsizing + more turbos. I'll take a larger, more NA engine with lightweight hybrid over a small, muffled engine any day.
I don’t know. Wait until that car runs out of warranty and find out. All of these mild hybrid bmws Audis and Mercedes are going to be in junkyards big time. No one will be able to afford any drivetrain repairs never mind all of the other obsolete plastic fantastic parts.
@@marceldiazTheOctaneGuy People said the same thing about cars in the 80s, then 90s, then 2000s, then 2010s, and look at that, they're all still around.
@@heyhayhay247 No. They didn't say that.
@@brianrainey2739 people have been saying this for decades. Fuel injection, ECUs, plastics, AWD, electric seats, navigation systems, etc. The list goes on. If it's new and more complicated, people will cry about it.
Cars have reached a point where "better" has become less desirable for many of us. More efficient? Faster? More automated and higher-tech? Sure, all of that. But in the process, everything is turning into an appliance. Too perfect. Perfection is sterile. Most enthusiasts would agree that cars have been plenty fast for the last 20 years. Their capabilities exceed our ability to use them, except on track (and even there, faster isn't necessarily more fun). Enthusiasts want interaction with the machine, a song from the engine, and the ability to do at least some maintenance or modification on our own. Sure this GTS is a fantastic automobile, but we can see where it's heading. I have several vehicles which are neither new nor perfect, but very enjoyable to this enthusiast. Glad I've been able to enjoy the "Peak ICE" decades during my lifetime.
Perfectly summed up
I’ve never heard anyone hating on the new hybrid system in the 911, since we know it weighs only 50kg more. People are hating on the cost cutting in the interior… rightfully so.
Actually 60 kgs heavier. They took out the rear seats.
@@billnorblat4047 aCtuAlLy 6O kGs hEaViEr
Actually it’s both.
I’ve seen a lot of hate for the hybrid system.
I hated on it on Instagram, and Matt replied to me in a not-very-happy manor 😅
I hate the no manual option, push button start & the digital gauges
200k for a GTS wow
Crazy time we live in
Really? Is that what a huracan cost, or a new mclaren?
As a mechanic, I am LOVING those cutaway components. I’ve been sitting on this video paused on those components just eyeballing them
Same, but also no belts and accessories for interval service.
Great review and looking slim Matt! 🙌
Brought to you by Porsche Weight reduction methods 😁
Matt, I am car fanatic and that was a great video. Balanced and fair, good cadence and interesting. I struggle with a lot of car based content as it can’t hold my attention for 20 mins, particularly as I come from the top gear era but that was top draw. You are nailing it dude, keep it up
That T-Hybrid sticker will be deleted by everyone ordering this car! LOL
It´s optional in the first place, canˋt imagine anyone ordering it
@@jetara3082 No..go on the configurator for the GTS. It's on there and I do not see a way to delete it right now.
@@jetara3082 Check out the Porsche configurator. It is on the GTS standard and I do not see a delete option. Go to Porsche USA and see for yourself!
can't delete the front bumper vents tho
I think they offer the gts sticker also.
Anyone craving for more power previously could have got the next level up; 911 Turbo 992.1 which costed then barely more than this new 992.2 GTS, or now second hand costs dramatically less than this new GTS.
Absolutely no one was asking for more power in the GTS, and definitely not more cost, and absolutely not for this complex hybrid system which will be a maintenance nightmare in 10 years. For the same money I’d get a mint 992.1 Turbo S any day
The Porsche 918 spyder is a hybrid. So why isn't a 911 hybrid awesome?
Different purpose. 918 is a halo hypercar, 911 is their bread and butter. But of course after watching the video we all will love it when we hear it.
@@coleathan6890just buy a base Carrara then and shut up. There’s only gonna be 2 models that are hybrid and not all of them have even been revealed. Gt cars will not be hybrid and I’m sure there will also be a Carrera T and other manual options
One has a lemans v8 and electric torque vectoring on the front axle and was about 4 times the price
@@SparklingWalrus Next GT2 will definitely have sort of hybrid turbo something like this.
The resale value on this will say it all. I doubt it will be good.
Styling changes to the front and rear fascias are a bit fussy compared to the current ICE 911, but glad it is still good to drive.
This is also an ICE 911 by the way
Nice video. I don’t know how you can talk and drive that fast but props to ya!
It’s mind blowing that Porsche has been able to charge such a premium for the most mediocre sounding 911 generation outside of the GT3/ST. The performance of the 992 generation is fantastic but the engine sound is so mediocre. Having owned a 992 C2S, I always prayed no one would ask me to rev it lol
It performed great at high speeds but was so boring otherwise.
These hybrids with single turbos don’t appear to sound much better sadly.
Other than GT3s Porsches have never had amazing sounds really. The turbo models especially have always sounded bad.
@@danmobile agree, my 991.2 base sounded better than my 992 C2S albeit still not great and both had performance exhaust. The 992 turbo S as fast as it may be sounds practically the worst of them all.
@@danmobile come to a Porsche rally in the mountains and I'll prove you wrong
@@slytherben Been driving Porsches for 25 years, nothing will change my mind lol.
But let's hear it, what exhaust and car?
Blame the dodo heads paying 10-20k overs for 911 GTS and s. Porsche will price themselves into supercar territory which they aren’t. A loaded turbo 992.2 coming up loaded will be 300K. 300K for a TTS?
Porsche never fails to amaze me. Porsche engineers are top tier.
The problem w/ screens for the speedometer is they all look the same. This car costs how much? Yet the Speedo screen looks the same as a cheap Kia.
Yeah I liked the analog dials. The new Bugatti Tourbillon went full analog dials, hopefully Porsche and others can take cue
Yup. Chiron has analog dial. Screens gets a downvote from me
No manual, no deal. Would be better if Porsche just adds lightness and keep it "simple".
1600+ kgs is far from light.
@@vvevvevvvv me thinks that is what he meant (see Lotus/Chapman quote).
@@kidjef Exactly.
I don’t get the manual obsession.. let it go. I had a manual GTS and couldn’t wait to get back to a PDK.
You keep hitting the rev limiter, because you’re shifting a PDK at a track!! Stop and let the computer work for you and focus on braking and lines
Skinny Matt!!!
Well done to Matt, he's looking much healthier and happier.
Great vid as always Matt. Front looks like crap…. Give me NA….with real sound any day. Feeling 996 vibe….
Had watched a couple of other respected reviews but still learnt some new stuff. Good job Matt.
I cant imagine the service cost of a PDK with an electric motor in it
I’m sure it’s just the fluid unless the motor fails.
@@HeathRS in 15 years, if the motor fails, they'll total the car 😅
@@timmy26 doubt it’s going to last that long
That motor next to the turbo would be my concern.
that mostly seems true of PDK and not the electric motor, honestly.
Awesome video! That track session was well shot and edited. I'm off to play video game Ascari now...
First and probably only video I'm gonna watch on this car. Great stuff as always Matt
Great resview. Motor sounds synthesised though.. is it the sound also coming from speakers?
It has kind of a bland, lifeless quality. Really unimpressed.
Sounds awful. Sounds 718 Flat-4 bad.
It's probably a mix of various mics
“Tightens….tightens…”
“….Remember The Titans.” 😂
I wish they would have gone back to an na engine now that they have hybrid. The GT4 engine with 420hp + hybrid would be so nice. And then leave the hybrid out for the base and T models.
Does the new battery in the front decrease the front trunk space?
I don’t mind the eturbo or the ePDK. I just don’t give a shit about speed. The whole point of 911’s was driving feel. All I want is a nice, fun to drive, manual Porsche that doesn’t need me to take a serving mortgage out on my house. Why don’t they make that anymore?
As goofy as it sounds…the closest thing to an older style Porsche (minus the flat 6) that’s NEW…is the ND2/3 Miata… small, lightweight, decently refined, and a very smooth relatively high revving engine. I’ve noticed quite a few Porsche owners “downgraded” to one as it’s more fun to drive on the street and way cheaper to own/maintain.
With how fast modern Porsches have gotten (and modern cars in general), idk where you’re supposed to somewhat safely enjoy them other than on the racetrack. They’re big cars now…not much room to play in your lane on a mountain road. Speed limits for mountain roads in the States are stupid low, usually 35mph….even 60 mph is probably a bore given how fast and capable this 911 is.
I wish companies could make an OG Exige/Elise style car…90s-mid 2000s was the peak for cars IMO
❤️ Matt your driving commentary and watching you push cars on road and track is enormously entertaining and educational 🙏
Watched the pod at lunchtime and couldn’t wait to get home after you said the embargo was at 3🙏🏼
lol yea I started the podcast and got to that point and had to pause to come watch this video.
Its a rebirth of the Power Recovery Turbine from WW2. Its just in electronic form. It’s still neat though.
Don't forget the AMG C class (atrocious car) already is doing this. Bunch of semi engines have been turbo-compounded for years. Detroit DD15/16 being popular (but there are several others).
@@corystansbury
In Europe Renault and Volvo trucks also.
@@jareknowak8712 I think the DD15/16 might be mostly a Mercedes engine, underneath. I think it was the Volvo D13 that used it to add 50 HP as a means to bridge the gap between two other engines they had, one too small and one too large.
Doesn't Scania do it, too? We don't get them here in the U.S., but I always heard exceedingly positive things about them from my friend who worked at International.
These are lovely.... but I am sad to see no manual option
Not many companies offer hybrid manuals. (Honda did a long time ago) Let's hope something with three pedals is coming.
@@cbotten106 thats true... but this isnt really a 'hybrid' by the traditional definition of that word. this is more like a battery assisted ICE car. I think the GTS deserves a manual. They should have saved the E-turbo for the Turbo s.
Couldn't help but think while looking down the nose of this car (from the front facing roof camera), these headlight/bumper lines look 993-esque... I wonder if that came up in the design language discussions? Maybe I'm crazy, Loved hearing you describe the new engine as a "hot rod" Matt! In an ever hyrbid-izing world Porsche can still stamp their growling marque. Can't wait to see what the plans are for the upcoming entry-level specs as well as GT variants. Keep up the great work!
7:30 what a beautiful twisty shot
Great review Matt! Love the composition of in car video and drone footage.
Engine Sound…kinda has a v8 growl??
Superb content as usual!
Great cinematography; really well shot. Loved those FPV drone aspects!
Wow beautiful scenery in the video
Living the dream Matt, after listening to the last podcast, was looking forward to this drive.
Peace
Great video Matt! Jumped to yours first and no regrets
That electric motor in the PDK gearbox is gonna be horrendously expensive to fix if it goes pop….as someone that has owned a lot of new Porsches, my recommendation is do not let your warranty expire. Always pay to renew it, especially with new tech like the electric starter motors in these cars
Seems a Turbo successor, for turbo drivers with turbo qualities. And as far as GT ones go, this'll be the hybrid automatic one. Very weird shift in the product line-up, lets see if it will make sense looking back one day.
actually made it make sense more than anyone else!!
Looking good Matt. Nice car too. I wish I had one.
Coupe for me.
Thank heavens it still has a engine.
I bet the 992.2 turbo S will run 9.9 on the 1/4 ...
Thank you for this review on the .2 GTS. As always, your reviews are thoughtful and comprehensive. With some reservations about the new "t-hybrid," your credibility through the years has really helped to put me at ease, especially now that a well-specced .2 GTS will surpass $200K... Cheers to you, sir!
That slight drift going over the Crest was cool!
Great review. The non hybrids are gonna be going up in value fast
How can they go any higher? The prices for used 911s are ridiculous.
@@gregs8685 oh there’s plenty of room to go higher. Just like the prices for the last front engine corvettes are going up, it’ll be twice the rate of increase for Porsches.
Great video! I enjoy the direction Porsche went with this kind of hybrid and I would like other manufacturers to follow suit. BMW for instance
Nobody else built the 919. 😉
The other manufacturers have like, a decade of catching up to do.
Corvette E-Ray.
Great track footage!
Do you think that there is too much Porsche content on the interwebs?
amazing 4k quality intro!!!
Thanks Matt!
Great video ! On just regular GY on track is impressive. What's it cost to rent the track out for the day ?
Great video, I especially enjoyed you thrashing it on track! Trust Porsche to do hybrid better.
And it has to be said Matt, you’re looking trim, good work! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sweet review Matt....you trimmin' down my man, lookin' good keep it up🤘😜🤘
Looking healthy, Matt. Keep going.
That shit’s cool as fuck.
A really nice, descriptive review from Matt. I learned a lot and it was entertaining. I’m wondering how all that extra complexity will affect reliability. Without a starter and alternator, might it improve?
*OMG future repair bills on the battery replacement will be high*
Matt you look great with the weight loss! Keep it up homie!!!!
Great video
I like how they basically hybridized it like that aftermarket system you guys covered like 10 years ago
yeah i remember in the early 00s you could buy those electric turbos lol. I'm sure this is much better than what that was.
the THYBRID lol
in regards to reliability, eliminating the pulley driven components might actually remove future repair headaches; could be net positive if the hybrid system holds up
Prior 991.2 GTS owner and current GT4 owner, I am not of fan of this progress. I realize it will sell well enough, but this isn't what the 911 should ever be. Porsche should have developed a new line to noodle with hybrid/electrified options.
That track’s surrounding really is beautiful.
Can’t believe they kept the dainty little shifter.
why? it's cheaper to reuse the old design
You mean the one from the 918?
Yeah, I hate that thing. Why note use the shifter from the GT3? It is soo much better
@@nafnaf0 ha, I like it. You touch it only once or twice per drive, so why do you need a big shifter that’s cosplaying as a manual shifter?
@@nafnaf0 the GT3 shifter is the cringiest, most un-Porsche thing ever. It pretends to be something it's not, which could not be further from the ethos of Ferdinand Porsche. But then, I think Preuninger is a prole, so...
Another fantastic demonstration of the latest Porsche GTS. What model Dillons are you wearing?
Sounds just like a 2017 NSX.
Similar engine displacement
The first car ever designed by Ferdinand Porsche was a gas/electric hybrid. I will never have any issue with an electric or hybrid Porsche.
Idc how much better it is. Sports car weight creep is out of hand.
1.9 kilowatt hours / 400 volts = 4.75 amp hours! To put that into perspective, a typical car 12v battery is about 80 amp hours. However, watt hours is a function of volts and amps, so of course a 12v battery would have more amp hours since the voltage is WAY lower
Gonna miss the analog tac.
Matt, how does the speed and acceleration compare to your DeMan Spyder?
If you drove this car for a while, which I’m sure is a very nice car very smooth and turn around and drove a 9 11 from the late 80s early 90s you would love that car much more
How would you compare this Porsche factory e-hybrid system to the Vonnen E-Hybrid system in the 991 you drove a few years back?
It sounds super good on track!
It sounds like a nightmare once warranty expires
This is most modern cars. When a taillight costs over $1k there’s a major problem.
1k for a tail light is one thing, but I can’t imagine what a electric motor in the transmission replacement or a bad turbo would cost on this thing 😅
Yeah that’s what i’m thinking…there’s just too much going on at once in some of these cars today.
Of all the things that would make me agree with you, I'd clarify the hybrid is the least of my worries. Batteries and electric motors have been proven to be extremely reliable in automotive history for ~25 years now. A headache in 30 years? probably yeah, but not in 10. It'll be a lot of other conventional things (including the engine sad to say) that'll be a nightmare in 10!
@@Trendyflute That's not really the problem, rather the finite life of batteries and the fact you WILL be sat with a big bill after 10 years or so is a massive issue, and hurts resale values. I mean who would want a car knowing that in a few years you are definitely getting hit with a 15k bill for a battery pack?
A well maintained engine will do over 10 years easily, and it breaking is a possibility, not an inevitability like changing batteries.
As a fairly new 992.1 GTS owner... If you're driving a 911, the last thing you're worried about is "efficency" and the "sound" (lack thereof) was heartbreaking.. the interior adjustments is leaning towards stale... maybe I just don't like change 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Ya but manufacturers are beholden to legislation. Maybe not in America, but in Europe certainly.
@stotheh ya that's right.. completely wasn't thinking of that
I feel like maybe you didn't watch the entire video... He said it's loud! It's also faster and handles better.
@JSmooVE3990 No, I did.. but going by the audio, it doesn't seem it.. maybe because the mic is isolated to his voice.. I guess there's only one way to find out, and it's first-hand experience
Looks like you're driving in Sonoma county 😔 so similar 😊
I also wear my Rolex on my right hand, because wearing it like normal people doesn't show in the camera.
So you live in a world where people can't wear their personal timepiece on the wrist they prefer, lest they be judged by "normal" people? Sad. Guess it's okay to have your watch on camera in a RHD car.
Very nice
This tech in the next GT3 is going to be hard AF. A smoother, faster, GT3...only sad we may never see this tech in a Cayman/Boxter GTS
How do they do a compression test on a car with no starter?
I gotta ask-- what's up with the audio during the ctec ad? Not complaining I was just a lil high and thought I might have been having a stroke LOL
Live audio from a tall concrete lined room compared to the usual which I’m guessing is recorded in the sound isolated podcast studio on the good mic, perhaps?
I'd put money on it being Zack with an AI voice changer.
looking good matt! Are you on the "O"?
Car prices of the hybrids will drop like a rock in few yrs
Good to see Porsche following Prius gen 1 tech
I love the sound of this car 😂
Would have liked some video/discussion of the interior.
WOOO NEW TST PORSCHE VID
I wonder if this will be tunable with the e-turbo?
What is really crazy is a Camaro ZL1 1LE in six years ago in 2018 did that same time, and it cost less than half the price at $70k. Given the substantial increase in horsepower over the 992.1 GTS, I wonder if the 992.1 + $15k in power mods (tune, headers, exhaust, upgraded turbos, E85) would probably destroy the 992.2. Even at the same power, how much turbo lag are you going to have on the Nurburgring? Probably not much, so that means the e-turbo is useless. Wonder how long the battery will last before it degrades or overheats.
Maybe just a me issue but I have noticed when a release happens I tend to miss the main channel review at first until I watch the podcast and realize I missed a good episode. I have a lot of subs that I watch so sometimes I do miss the main channel new reviews when they all drop at the same time, it floods the sub page. Funny I found you on drive when you worked there and thought oh, I’d rather just watch him on his channel than this tv show thing. Will also say I’m kinda guilty of watching the podcast more than the main channel nowadays. Crazy how tastes change as you age. Found the old “garage” vids a long time ago but can’t find them anymore probably for a good reason 😂
That thing seems brilliant to me
Porsche, for the new Carrera S please make a 3.0L or de-tuned 3.6L version of this without the electric motor and with a smaller battery pack, but keep the e-turbo, and make it available with a manual (should be possible since it won't have the electric motor). No PDCC, no ugly active aero vents up front
Wow Matt you lost a ton of weight. Good for you.
This new tech is bananas when it comes to tech advancement, formula one territory stuff, but I am keeping my 992.1 GTS, lost me at no manual, this cars are getting more complicated every day, I personally think that PDK will be an expensive repair and if one part fails on that Hybrid function then no starter or no AC, reliability has been the #1 Porsche premise not sure this cars will last 50 years like the old school ones
Makes you wonder what the hybrid tech will do to the turbo/s
It looks like Matt had Zack speed up the outside shots through the corners
No issue with hybrid 911, but no interest in an electric 911.
