  • The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB is, in essence, Ferrari's first mid-engined car. The Dino may have come beforehand, but this was the first to wear a Ferrari badge.
With just 387 produced, it's much rarer, lighter and more powerful than the later 512s.
Join evo's Henry Catchpole as he drives the iconic car.

I'm so glad you managed to find one of these. A more raucous uncivilised version of the later 512BB - I remember seeing a road test for this at the time and loving the little pull down sunvisors! It was the bogs dollocks at the time. I was later lucky enough to own a carb 308GTB - can't believe how stupid I was to sell it. The crackle from those carbs with the drivers' window cranked a couple of inches was sublime (Rhd version)

Henry is lucky that the car he got to drive has a big steering wheel spacer fitted. This gives a much better chance of achieving a comfortable driving position. The standard wheel is so close to the top of the instrument cowl that the leather there is often covered in nicks from fingernails! What a pure shape these cars were though. Lovely!

Good commentary on the high-profile tires. Plus, those tires just look RIGHT on these cars. The suspension would not cope with low-profile tires. But my MINI is a bulldog compared to that 365 GT4 BB.....beautiful car.

Most modern sports cars look more like advanced kitchen appliances than anything else, with their over-abundance of ugly, geometric, details breaking up the lines of the car. The BB, and the Lamborghini Miura, that it was a response to, are just svelte with the barest of design details that complement the look of the cars rather than distract from them.

I believe those early BB cars were quite lovely to drive at medium speed, but they became a bit of a handful if you tried to push them. As mentioned, the engine was on top of the gearbox, which was not ideal, and like the Countach, manufacturers hadn't quite worked out what the suspension and alignment settings should be yet... Correct 'normal' front engine dynamics was pretty well understood, but getting a mid engine to work right was a bit of a new thing...

+damieg82 Basically in a boxer engine each pair of pistons operate "in phase", so the opposing cylinders ignite simultaneously. In a 180° V engine each pair of pistons share a crankpin, so they fire "out of phase" with each other (when one goes up, the other goes down).

    3:17 What's the difference between a boxer and 180 degree V engine?

Shape. Boxer is as the name suggests basically a square box while a V is obviously in the shape of the letter 'V'. 180 just means its rotated

      altern8ive Thanks haha!
So all it means is boxer engines have a separate crank journal for each piston versus flat V have two pistons per crank journal.

+CyberTigerCro Nope, you actually got it completely wrong. 180 degree V engines are shaped exactly like boxers, with all of the cylinders lying flat (180 degrees apart from each other). The difference is more technical: a boxer has every single piston with its own connection to the crankshaft, in an alternate fashion, meaning opposing cylinders fire simultaneously, "boxing" each other like fists. 180 degree V, each pair of opposing pistons shares a single connection to the crankshaft, so they are always moving in opposite directions, not "boxing" each other.

In my opinion that thing looks like the odometer has been rolled back, look at the wear on the pedals, especially the accelerator. Way more than 9000km of wear.

If just the accelerator is worn than it could be from the owner starting up the car and revving it few times once a week or something. That would keep the car running without putting miles on it. I would guess you're right if the brake pedal shows wear though.

Glorious. Through the years and through various models I think that bodyline, from nose and over the front wing up to the B pillar and to the tail is one of the loveliest lines in automotive history. Lets just say that the 348 was something of a disappointment...

You can see the steering wheel shimmying terribly under braking. Discs must be warped or pads glazed.
