Who is D, Hunter of the Dead? | Elden Ring Lore

- In Elden Ring, D is one of the earliest friendly merchants that the player can meet. This hunter of the dead seeks to perfect the Golden Order by hunting down Those Who Live in Death and weeding their Deathroot. While his story isn't too intricate when compared to some other characters, D still has some interesting connections to other NPCs and helps to highlight some of the core themes of Elden Ring.

I named my character D, as I always do. So when I encountered D, I thought he was an npc somehow tied into my character, especially due to his armor basically being two distinct identities
Please tell me you now use the Twinned Armor religiously in that case, haha. Turns out there’s three of you

I just realized in watching this video, the way D stands after killing Fia isn't just him leaning way back to look triumphantly on his work. It enables the silver head of the armor to hold itself straight up, its eyes uncovered and gazing forward instead of down, seeming confident and in control for the first time while the gold takes a back seat.
Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought the same that he bent back so the silver brother can look as if it’s the main body pretty cool
Dude that is such a cool observation. Thank you for elevating my experience brother!
@@allmightfan He is the silver brother. He's in the other part of the armor, which is why he's holding the sword with the silver hand.
I want to know more about Gold Mask. I find him the most interesting among the the Tarnished who give you different endings. He was a non-fundamentalist who saw the flaws in the Golden order but was accompanied by a fundamentalist. He perfected the order and T-posed on Corhyn to assert dominance and left him.
Left him? Bruh, he was pushed off a cliff.

Damn, I always wondered why the golden order, who shuns so many "accursed" beings, was the one to accept them. I never made the connection you pointed out at the end of the video, it makes so much sense
Why were they "accursed" though? They both look like regular humans
They are accured though, the Who-Lives-In-Death are people who have no soul but live anyway as Godwyn are. The Omens are severed, for some reasen, from the Erdtree and they can't recive it's blessing (except Morgott who were even with his condition was able to use holy incantiations and in the end was able to return the Erdtree, or at least I think his becoming golden particlse mean that). The misbegotten I think the only real group who are not really cursed but shuned, but in the Haligtree area you can see that Miquella who are pretty pro-Erdtree as he wanted makeing a new one acceopted them as well so I think they are more discriminated because people are peoples and not because they are accursed. + You can find the crusible talismans and there describtion is write about how the people started hating them grdually and it was not always part of the Golden Order. Rogier talking about this as well in connection to the Carians.

At the explanation at 10:00 for Destined Death, my impression was that Marika had removed the rune of Destined Death so that everyone would live and be recycled after death through the ErdTree, much like you are whenever your character dies. Those who live in death did not get recycled through the Erdtree, they just never are able to die to begin with, so they just keep coming back as undead. Bodies living but without a soul, just like Godwyn.
He basically wants to keep the cycle of life going, and being undead is violating that.
In my opinion, though, those who live in death die in the body but not in the soul, which remains trapped in their dead body until we kill the soul, too

I really enjoyed your connection between Devin’s regret and Darian covering the eyes on the armor! That was truly brilliant! I would’ve loved to hear some speculation of what Devin’s regret is and why he wouldn’t be able to look his own brother in the eye.
Devin probably met Fia and allowed her to hug him and take his vitality (like most players). When he realized what she was up to, he became depressed. As a result, Darian takes up the twinned armor to continue their fight against those who live in death. Only when you return the twinned armor to him that he realizes that Darian has been killed and gains the resolve to kill Fia.
The dagger from earlier in the questline was probably given to Fia by Devin. Which would explain why Darian says he knows who the owner of the dagger is.
But I'm no lore expert so I may be totally wrong.
@@Blaze_Raven I believe you are likely totally correct
Fun fact, when you find the other D, he's not bending backward, you can see that the armor changed. Now the silver side becomes the dominant one.

Rogier and the twins D are some of my favorite characters so far in Elden Ring, and I hate Fia for her involvement in their deaths. I know she doesn't kill Rogier, but she made me fight him and I just hate that so much.
Since the dagger came to Fia through Devin, we can only speculate, but I wonder if Devin accepted Fia's embrace and it filled him with guilt.
Fr I was so happy when fia died
My read on it was that Fia found the dagger in the heart of someone she loved and needed our help tracking down the murderer…turns out D was the killer and she acted accordingly before asking us to leave them alone then vanishing. I found Fia a lot more sympathetic because it seemed like D wasn’t just killing skeletons but also moving towards regular “undead” people like Fia. She even called them meek and said they just wanna live. I dunno.
@@agentstepp Its implied that Fia recovered the dagger at Godwyn's corpse, because the dagger itself is marred by black disintegration, and we know someone removed the Hallowbrand from Godwyn, and it is implied to be D, Beholder. Fia went looking for the hallowbrand and found it stolen, with the dagger as the only piece of evidence. Fia murdered D because he had the Hallowbrand, and also because they were at odds. She also caused the death of Rogier, Lionel, and dozens of others as seen in her fight, to achieve a near identical goal to Dung Eater, spreading their curse to the whole population.
@@agentstepp no the dagger belongs to ds brother

@@matiasluukkanen7718 never thought of her like that, that's a pretty nice interpretation
8:18 Do’s younger brother becomes a summon, just by the fog door entrance.
I think this NPC is inspired by the series called Vampire Hunter D. The main character is also called D and has a twin called Twin D
With me fia's concept of death being restored is twisted, because it's not the real death, Destined Death, but more like the undead concept of the former souls game, which also trap people in the slumbering of an eternal life, not so much of a different in compare with marika's eternal without destined death
Other D will also be a cooperator for the twin gargoyle bosses
Just wanted to say that D(Devan) reminds of Alfred(Dude with the pyramid head) the executioner in bloodborne by the way he speaks in triumph after killing their target, which coincidently are some of royalty. They both even described the gruesome death of their victims.
great content, very insightful.
did I miss the part where the D's are described as a single soul in two bodies? I found that concept intriguing because it's kind of the inverse of the Merika / Radagon rebis which is two souls in a single body.
Yeah, you missed it.
Judging by the shape of the armor, at first I would’ve thought they were conjoined twins!
I believe it is another allusion to vampire hunter D who was born with a conjoined twin also referred to as D. Just like elden ring D, VH D’ twin brother is cruel.
D is one spirit shared by two souls. Marika/Radagon are two spirits jostling over one soul. Thats how I see it. Soul is the shell, spirit is the egg.
@@geordiejones5618 issue is that radagon is just a persona, much like margit is morgott.
D is a reference to Vampire Hunter D, A dampire that hunts the undead and Vampires alike.

Bro you are single handedly carrying Elden Ring lore. What an absolute unit
looking at Godwyn's corpse at the angle provided 8:24 you can clearly see what looks to be an humanoid abdomen, with what looks to be a mermaid tail growing from underneath it. more curiously for me, however, is what looks to be two arms hidden behind the head and the entwining roots that seem to be propped as if to lift the body from a resting pose to a standing one. Just what the hell has Godwyn become?
If i remeber correctly i saw somthing in ytb saying that like Omen who are human who are reggresing in the evolition of species ( tail wing etc) at his death Godwyn began to regress into the first form of life ( fish tail for the first live in water and the roots for the first living creature in the world)

If you don't give the armor to the younger brother, can you still enter Fia's dream and does defeating that boss cause her to die or does it basically play out the same way except you don't end up with D's sword? Also, if Fia's quest is never followed, will there just be an empty area where Fia would otherwise be?

D is most likely a reference to Vampire Hunter D, an 80s anime that focused on a half-vampire that hunted the dead/undead.
The Erdtree doesnt recycle back into the Lands between. It simply absorbs it to grow larger.
Which is why its important to note: The fallen leaves tell a story...
Once dead, the tree still has all the locked souls and spirits within its husk.
Which is why the scarlet rot ia considered divine as well. In nature mosses, fungus and putrifecation re-accesses the carbon and nutrients of husks and/or stone. To provide it in other forms.
6:47 lol that was my reaction
As I understand it then, twin brothers, in between lands, is a kind of curse that divides a soul into two corpors. This is reflected in the D brothers, in Miquela and Milenia and in their parents, Marika and Radagon.
I don’t believe it divides the soul itself, but more like it twins in universe tend to suffer from some kind of determent.(a.e. Melina the curse of rot and twin with a weak body) also, marika and radagon dont aline in being twins because if we take both theories, either its the same person that separated itself or two different people that ended up merging.
Great video! It gave me the idea that perhaps Devin retrieved the hollowbrand from Godwyn’s corpse and sealed it away in the weathered dagger (similarly to how Maliketh sealed Destined Death in the Black Blade, then in his own body). Although I don’t understand how this would connect to “returning the dagger to its original owner” and why Fia had to kill Darian to achieve this.
Something else, after giving the armour set to the D in the aqueduct, you can summon him for the gargoyle fight.
You make the best Elden ring Lore videos
A very niche reference to vampire hunter D which is why I loved him

That's very interesting how the inseparable sword says that the twins would be considered accursed by everyone but the Golden Order, yet almost all we know about as being reviled or accursed in the lands between (i.e. the omen and crucible) are considered so almost exclusively by that very Golden Order. It seems very uncharacteristic for the order to not hate anything that doesn't fit in. Even the D twins revile those who live in death simply because it is against the Golden Order.
I want to point out that I think there names are a reference to an anime I think is called vampire hunter D.

Rogier & D both died before any quest stuff started for me, what did I miss that starts their quests? The vid glosses over it with "a long winded quest invoking rogier and Ranni"...
I played a spellsword named Farik.
Farik does not care if you are death or life, good or evil. As long as you are his ally you are his friend, Fia embraced Farik, and Farik called her friend. When he found her dead on the ground, D holding his head up high, laughing, flaunting his so call victory over the witch, Farik and myself felt pure, raw rage burn in our veins, I didn’t care who he was, what his story was, he MURDERED Farik’s friend! D's posture is also very interested. one holds one hand over the eyes of the silver side. while the other one stays with the back leaned back as if the silver one is the real head in almost a straight posture
The one thing I hate story wise is that you meet such interesting tarnished and they all die because you "helped" them or Interact with them , becoming elden Lord for me was bittersweet just because your character goes it mostly alone just to reach the throne , kinda reminds me of Obito Uchiha

Godwyn befriended Fortissax and the dragon still watches over him in death.
During the capital's war with the dragons, godwyn befriended Fortissax. Fortissax and his sister Lanseax basically founded the dragon cult and taught knights how to do cool lightning stuff.
