    Fun fact, Amzoil makes Nissan OEM Transmission fluid and it will not void the warranty if you use Amzoil synthetic fluid rated NS-3. Blew my mind when I discovered that as well.

    For those DIY'rs that don't have an expensive comp and are worried about not enough fluid being added, you can measure what's been dumped. I've done this with CVT's and normal automatics that require VERY specific amounts or damage may be done.
    Use a measuring cup and record exactly how many cups have been dumped out of the trans and record it. Clean the cup and refill it with the precise amount of fluid to go back in. I've never had any problems using this method.

    Great informative DIY. I just did CVT fluid change on my 2015 Infiniti QX60 that shares the same engine as the Pathfinder. I used a Milwaukee thermal gun to measure oil temp. Thanks a lot for posting this. Removing the CVT fill cap is enough challenge already till I came across your video. Infiniti is quoting me $520 for this service.

(Our last Sienna died from the infamous and catastrophic Toyota oil sludge defect. 😵🤬) The Quest has better quality than the last-generation cheaply-made, but immensely popular Sienna and it's tons more comfortable and reliable than the Odyssey!!! Oil quality was "used" condition and not burned. Minimal amount of build up on the pans magnets as well, so I think it had been serviced at 60k with at the least a dump and pump.

      This fluid is much lower rated put up against Amsoil or Castrol Duramax CVT fluid in heat resistance ability and breakdown. (Should be cheaper too?)

      The instruction shown in the video is per Nissan Service Manual. Nissan does not require changing of the filter. There is a filter that can be accessed on the outside higher up on the transmission. You can change it, but again even Nissan dealers don't change it.

    Very good video.
    IMO, the transmission dipsticks were deleted for cost savings.
    I would never use an impact gun on the fluid plugs/bolts. Very risky for a a couple of critical bolts.
    I also recommend to loosen the overflow/fill plug/bolt 1st on any vehicle. If you can't get that one loose or out for any reason, you don't want to drain the fluid!

  • @SaveAmerica69
    @SaveAmerica69 Před 11 měsíci +1

    When you drain the transmission fluid on it and do a drain and fill, you measure the amount of fluid that you take out, and you simply put that amount back into the vehicle.

Ive heard that these CVTs have typically crapped out on people anywhere from 60k-100k miles, so I'm also well passed that mark. I'm debating whether I should even worry about changing this fluid now, or just wait for the CVT to die 😅.

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před rokem +3

      The method you mentioned will not guarantee you have the proper fluid level. CVT fluid volume changes quite a bit with temperature. This is the reason Nissan took away the dipstick because they don't want people to check level with it. The method I showed in this video is per the Nissan service manual. You are the car owner, so you can decide how you want to do this service but just keep in mind replacing a CVT transmission cost $4000-$8000.

    Great video. I just purchased a 2012 Quest. I am intending to service the cvt asap and have the fluids , filter, and pan gasket. This vehicle does have the dipstick. So if I’ve got the temp in the right range , using that dipstick should be good , I think . Do you agree? I just called the local Nissan dealer and they said they don’t change that filter in the pan, but “flush 3 times “ and charge me 350 for that. The vehicle is in spectacular shape and has 185,000 miles and so far the cvt works great and I intend to stick to that 30k interval.

      What the dealer told you is correct. The Nissan dealer does not change the filter as part of the service. They only do a drain and fill. But if you want to do the filter change, then that's up to you. Since you have a dipstick, you can see how dark the tran fluid is. If it's really dark or smell burnt, then you can do the drain and fill couple of times and drive some miles between fluid change.

      @@dial2fast thank you for the response. Not sure if I have that overflow bolt set up. I am still waiting for everything to come so I can get the whole thing on jack stands and do all the maintenance items like oil and filter, air and cabin filter, PS and brake fluid , coolant and suspension inspection all in one go. Once I’ve got it in the air I’ll see if I have that set up you show. I’m sure it does. Thank you again. Oh I’ve since leaned that there is even a second filter I can service as well.

      @@dial2fast alright I have done the service. I can’t find the overflow bolt. Anyways I have a dipstick and measured how much came out and replaced it with about 4.25 quarts of Nissan NS2. I changed the inside pan filter and the outside one (not a cartridge but a very beefy all metal one with a hose going in and a hose coming out ) anyways even though it has a dipstick the manual doesn’t say how to check it. The dipstick has a checkered hash range and then had the word higher on the stick just saying hot but no range on that. So I don’t know the right way to check this. I haven’t driven it yet

    Just did this service, when I measured what came out, with the overflow drip, I had about 2.5 quarts. Severely low, but the car was in an accident on the right side, I'm wondering if they had the same cooler line removal yours did.

      Came back to thank you again. I've noticed my rpms are running at a lower rate at higher speeds. I no longer hear a growl at slow speeds. I've gone about 10K miles with low fluid. Hopefully I've avoided some damage by doing this service.

    The Nissan dealer advises never need to service CVT transmission. My Rogue Sport has done over 113k miles and CVT works perfectly.

      It will until it doesn’t anymore, I have done drain and fill fluid in my 2015 Rogue S and no issues at 110k
      I’ll be doing another one at 120k miles and change filter

      That fluid looked pretty bad. I think I would change it more often. CVTs run hot and require coolers to last. Driving a car with a steel belt rubbing against a steel pulley creates a lot of hot friction compared to a regular geared old school transmission. You won't find CVT transmissions in trucks. They'd burn up in a week. CVTs are weak cheap transmissions that came about only because EPA kept raising mpg requirements.

      Fluid always should be changed. It gets old shavings out of the trans.

    Would you be able to remove the pan and do a filter replacement on your next service? This video was great but it would be awesome to also see how to service the filter and pan gasket as well.

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 8 měsíci +1

      This service I showed is following the Nissan service manual (Nissan does not replace the filter). But for this CVT, the filter actually can be accessed and changed from outside the transmission. Higher up on the outside, there is a cover that you can remove and change the filter.

    So basically what you are saying is, take it to your dealer. That scanner costs more than all the services ever needed on a vehicle throughout its life.

      He didn't say take it to the dealer.
      He suggested u can use the scanner or the cheaper hand scanner. Which if u do it urself. With the savings it be free...

      No, you don't need to spend that kind of money for scanner, i purchased from eBay $ 15 scanner, it show all live data, i did used that $15 scanner and everything ok

    Thats not the way I do it at all. I get all 5 qt out.
    Drop the pan, and clean. Replace the pan screen filter, also tranny cooler filter, not doing this is a terrible idea 😮 I use Valvoline oil, because nissan NS3 is not very good oil 😢

    I am fixing to change the small oil filter cooler for the first time ever on this vehicle that has 160,000 miles but I’m afraid to drop the pan and change the 4 quarts because of how long it’s been without so I am thinking of just thinking of changing the oil cooler filter to clean some of the debris if any what do you think?
