- UPDATE: We are working on a new tutorial but in the meantime we recommend using CHROMAPPER as your editor over MMA2. CM hit open beta about 10 months after this this tutorial was created. Everything else in this video is valid, we just recommend using the newest editor. See download below.
Welcome to the wonderful world of mapping! Whether you have PCVR, Quest, or even no VR at all, you can follow the steps in this 17 minute tutorial to start creating your own custom songs. Consult the mapping wiki (link below) for more details and a deeper dive!

Instructions Clear, Beat saber map was made.
Was it hard the first time? I am thinking of starting mapping for my family, because i am a german Metal-Head and there are nearly no songs from the not world known german bands covered in Beat Saber. But i am not a real hero with computer, so i am a little bit afraid of mapping. ^-^
@@kakkaduu22 It WAS kinda hard the first time mapping. You're gonna make a lot of mistakes, and not many people will like your first few maps. My suggestion is to play beat saber a LOT when you first start mapping, so you get a feel for custom maps. (Don't play ost 1-3, only play ost 4)
Correct map was made
@@JdThe65th whats your mapping username? I wanna check out some of your maps, i also want to get into mapping as theres some songs i love from geometry dash that havent been mapped yet so im considering taking matters into my own hands lol

Why cant more videos like this be of this standard!!
Idk maybe I'm dumb but I can't understand a thing but still it's a good tutorial.
it is a good tutorial but it is either outdated or wrong.
@@MichelleMills1972 Care to tell us why?
I'm only a minute and a half in and as soon as I saw clean transitions, efficient speeding through file paths, I'm hooked.
theres an intro technically but uuuuh...
Thanks for watching, peeps! I hope some of you aspiring mappers out there found this helpful to get up and running! I had to skip a lot of the details to keep this bad boy short but anything you could *possibly* want to know is in the Mapping Wiki!
When I click on software the second time nothing is there
For me it says "error loading song file" can you help me?
@@TigerMC2 How did you convert your audio? That's a really common error if you used an online converter. You may want to head over to Discord for more real-time troubleshooting.
@@helencarnate7671 Forgot to use Audacity to make the audio better. Thanks!
Excellent. We have a youth event in Houston in July and we are planning to map out our theme song for the event. Any chance you would do this for us...and how much that might cost?
Going to try this today. I'm new to this, but I find the lack of modded songs in the 'normal' and 'hard' settings depressing. I think the song modders believe everyone that plays beat saber are experts!!
It's more that mapping takes a lot of time so mappers tend to make the maps that THEY want to play. I started mapping for the same reason you're thinking about it so making sure that all of my maps are accessible for lower diffs. Good luck!
most players are only playing expert and below for a month or two so theres much less demand, that being said a lot of ranked maps have hard/expert maps for accuracy, and a new player could use those to help them get better
its because normal and hard are boring af and no one is that bad
@@Sinner487 by the time i actually discovered mods i had already passed cycle hit on expert+ so that’s true for me
@@Sinner487 Hard disagree on that one, but also most mappers don’t put a ton of effort into their lowers so, yeah, a lot of them are lame and boring - but they don’t have to be. Also, it sounds like you aren’t the target audience for normal/hard anyway
This is very well edited.
It might look a bit intimidating to someone new to mapping, but the editing keeps you invested.
I was getting excited about mapping but was scared that it would be more than what I was expecting. This tutorial is suuuuper easy to follow and gets to the point very well and its giving me hope that i can actually pick this up! thanks

From the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU for making this video. Everything is so easy to follow!!!
How does this only have 140 likes?! This is an excellent tutorial.
Just wanted to say thank you to all the modders. You guys rock!
Amazing video! I am a complete noob in Beatsaber, watched the video for the first time yesterday morning, and finished my first draft of my very first map in the evening. Absolutely fantastic advice, resources and recs! Many thanks for making this process so accessible!

When I found out about ArrowVortex, hit F3 and I started vibing to the beats, still am actually! But really, this is a simple enough tutorial and I am glad that I came across it, thank you :)
and here's my opportunity to start mapping songs that I've never found in bsaber :D Thanks for this!
My new philosophy of commenting here is, if you don't have something good to say about a video, just don't comment. But oh boy I have such amazing things about this one, this might be the best tutorial ever. Well explained, graphic, clarity... BSMG you are the very best! Congrats!
This is the best and most well-explained tutorial I've ever seen
So comprehensive, and all using free tools. Thank you so, so much!!
I've made over 50 charts for Clone Hero and I've thought about getting into Beat Saber mapping. After watching the tutorial, I'm surprised just how similar a lot of the concepts are between the two games as far as the mapping goes. Excellent tutorial, I'll be joining the discord and looking into things like pattern theory and what NOT to do :)
It's all on the Basic Mapping page of the wiki... and when you're ready to go down the rabbit hole, we have Intermediate and Advanced pages on mapping, lighting, and audio. Happy mapping!
Thanks for posting this. What a great tutorial video. Hope you keep releasing content!

Ive been fixing a map made by someone else and your so far the only one who just clearly stated what jump and spawn distance actually does
Thank you for this! I was hoping to find a video like this one, to start my journey!
This is what a tutorial video should be. Not just how to use it, not just how to get it, but both. In an entertaining, very informative and, most importantly of all, concise video.
And an updated description!!, amazing video!
14:51, Actually it's SO IMPORTANT that you test you're map every few minutes, especially if you're doing a complex pattern that you don't know a lot about. And when I say "few minutes" I don't mean like half an hour, you should test it every 5-6 minutes (depending on how much you've done, more or less). Trust me, what on your keyboard may seem a masterpiece, you'll realise that it's a bullsh1t when you test it, and you will get frustrated. It's better to assume that you've got something to fix (even if you think that looks great) and catch immediately what's wrong than realising after an hour that what you've done is just not funny.
Don't be lazy and test it every little time.
I personally test every 30s or so of mapped blocks. Other people test more often, others test less often.
I didn't test mine till at the very end. Made a couple changes but it wasn't bad
What a gem, thank you so much for this tutorial, that's the level people need to aim for when it comes to guides/tutorials/teaching. Thank you~!
Awesome tutorial. I'm glad it is updated with the latest info too. Helen, you did a great job! Now to get my first song done.

Instructions unclear, triangle created
Illuminati triangle or just the regular kind?
For people who want to take advantage of the interscope environment features:
To take advantage of the left lasers(Type 6), right lasers(type 7), and the tire popping thingys(type 15 for popping the tires, type 16 for unpopping the tires)you will need to open up the official beat saber editor to do so, and to control the cars in groups, you will need a text editor to edit the values of type 8(ring rotation), type 15 and type 16. A value of 0 or 1 impacts all cars, 2 impacts the left cars, 3 impacts the right, and 4, 5, 6, and 7 control the pairs of cars starting from the one closest to you. If that simple enough, here’s a diagram:
🚗 🚙 7
🚗 🚙 6
🚗 🚙 5
🚗 🚙 4
2 1 3
So hopefully you know that they can’t add new lanes because they said it’s hard to add them.
Thanks for sharing this info! :-D
Starting down the rabbit hole, and I like where it's going.
This is a wonderful and thorough introductory tutorial to a confoundingly complicated topic. Frankly, it is a humiliation to all the professionals trying to create similar media.
By the end, I am fully set up to start mapping and maybe, eventually, create something worth posting. And I know how to do that, too!
This video was clearly a lot of work to put together and it is a precious and generous gift to the community of aspiring mappers. Thank you so much!! And OMG I love your name!

Sowwy Aalto... you'll have to wait for the ChroMapper version of this tutorial when it hits open beta ;-)
The lady: Starting mappers will take up to 20 hours to make a map.
Me finishing within 8 hours with a map that turns out very well.

This is the easy part of mapping, lol. Deciding what patterns to put where and crafting something that truly *fits* the music is the hard part :-D
@@helencarnate7671 I've never understood how mappers capture the flow and vibe of the music so well with the block placement.

Thank you so much
I'm interested in mapping because my favorite songs are obscure and either Don't have any mappings or there're all expert. Just so I'm able to play them myself. This tutorial is great. Also that tool to auto detect (mostly) bpm and offset is AMAZING!!!!!
Truly fantastic tutorial. Looking forward to giving mapping a try.
yes gud tutorial
I'm working on a tool for making a map in VR, so you can play how you feel the song should flow and then fine tune it later... good idea? Yes, no?
I think it's more challenging that one might think. What would be more practical and faster is to map traditionally but be able to tweak placement in game. Good luck with your project! Hit us up in Discord if you're interested in guinea pigs!
This is the most well made tutorial video I've ever seen
Thanks a lot! Super informative video. Oh. Also, your hair is literally fire. 🙂
Thanks 🙂
It says my song file name is wrong even though its right, ive tried song.ogg and my own😕
Make sure that you have file extensions turned on and that you don't accidentally have song.ogg.ogg. It's also case sensitive so if your file is Song.ogg and the field in MMA2 says song.ogg that's going to cause a problem. Those are the two most common reasons for getting that error. If that still doesn't work, join the BSMG or Beat Saber Mapping discord (links in description) and we can help troubleshoot further.

Awesome work Helen! I appreciate it. Got too much going on my life to commit the time to get into creating levels, but I want to. It makes me wish that they would release a comprehensive modding tool that streamlines the creation process.
Once you've done your first one, the audio setup process really only takes a couple of minutes. It's the mapping and refining that takes the time and unless you're going full auto-gen (don't do that :eyes:) there's really no getting around that part. I definitely get the "too much going on in my life" thing, though! There's a reason I only have 10 published maps in two years, lol.
this is the best video for starting out. Thank You so much!!

Yeah, making maps is one of those things that is sometimes harder to explain than to just do. Just got beast saber and 0:15 is the exact reason I’m here. It’s like all the modders expect all of us to be experts
It's not so much that, it's that most mappers map the difficulties they themselves enjoy playing. Remember the easy, normal, and hard players when you're a famous mapper and create full spreads!
@@BeatSaberMods hahaha I completely understand 😂
You're the best, thanks x
Thanks for the tutorial, I just recently got a new PC and the Valve Index and have been on a downloading spree for maps on there, but I've found that there's a lot of songs I like that aren't on there, so I figured I should give it a shot, but I have no clue how to map a Beat Saber song. atm I've got close to 100 songs I want to map because there's a disturbing lack of Weird Al Yankovic maps on Beat Saver, so I need to fix that and put on at LEAST 15 Weird Al Yankovic songs on there ;)

I'm a moonrider player but I'm watching this to admire the time spent on these maps
Just made my first one in around 2-3 hours (somehow, prolly because it's a short song)!
If you're curious just look up Blueprints - LOGE
i'll give some advise for those who have access to FL Studio to find your bpm.
(all numbers are examples!!)
there are 2 ways:
1: drag and drop the song into the DAW, click the little wave icon next to the title (on the left side), and then select "Detect tempo".
FL will now find the bpm of the song mostly acurate. sometimes if you have a 150 BPM song, FL will detect it as 149.998 BPM. dont worry about that.
Make sure the song is at a constant bpm and has no BPM changes, otherwise you will always get 100bpm. and thats wrong. if your song has structural bpm changes then read the text below.
2: if your song has break and bridge sections in 150bpm and the drops are 200 bpm, you can easily find that out.
cut out all the slow parts and detect the tempo by tapping (right click the BPM window and click tap, make sure sync and mute are unchecked)
take the drop parts and repeat the same detection process.
the build up sections are usually getting gradually faster by tempo automation so the rest is just logics
wow that was realy cool
The moment you realize BSMG has a channel.
facil de comprender, gracias, muy util !
¡De nada! Me alegro de que haya sido útil. 😀
