  • A quick overnighter at a pretty nice camping area in the Catskills, climbing to the top of Overlook Mountain for some great views, and camping down at Echo Lake.
    Here is some info about the Overlook Hotel...

    One of the most persistant and most dangerous mistakes hikers make is wearing noise canceling earbuds, headphones or any other audible obstruction that cancels out the sounds in ones vacinity. this is typically how hikers and joggers find themselves in life threatening situations, either from aggressive wild animals, peoples of il intent, and other unforeseen situations. You should always keep at least one ear open the sounds about you. You life depends on it, so could the lives of others calling for help. Aside from all that, GREAT VIDEO!! thankyou!!! now i dont need to do that trek!!!!! lol

      Yes, that is definitely good advice about the earbuds. It's always good to be aware of your surroundings. In my case, the earbuds that you see me wearing in the video are not noise cancelling earphones, and they are not even playing any sound. They are binaural microphones which are recording the audio you hear in the video. I do this to get better sound than what the GoPro camera can deliver. It's good that you pointed this out because other people watching the video might not be aware of it. I don't want to set any bad examples, lol.

    I did a backpacking overnight trip there with a friend and three of our kids when they were young about 13 years ago. Took a quick dip in the lake too. Nice hike.

      Yeah it's pretty nice, and an easy hike if you just want to relax and get outside. Word must have gotten out over the past few years though. It's very popular.

      Thanks! This was a nice easy hike, relatively speaking, for the Catskills. If you're curious about the building I put some links in the video description.

    Echo lake is loaded with Timber rattlesnakes. I’ve seen them 4-5 foot long with heads the size of my fist. Watch where you step!

      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před 3 lety

      Yes, I've heard that about Echo Lake, but luckily I never did see any during either of the two times I was there. It's always good advice to keep alert for rattlesnakes though. They're out there for sure.

    Great content as usual. Did you say what day of the week this was? Have you any idea how the crowds are Monday-Friday? I've always heard there a a substantial amount of snakes on this trail, as you showed. You captured the whole area perfectly. Cheers!

      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! This was a weekend trip, as are most of my trips. So, I'm guessing it won't be so bad during the week. I've had worse snake encounters than this on the Pennsylvania AT, so this wasn't so bad. I was trying to respect his space and give him a chance to get away, but he did not seem to care. lol

    Hey bud! Great video. I really enjoyed the extra map view as well. Would you say this trail is OK for mountain biking?

    • @downtoearthadventures1528
      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před 3 lety

      I'm probably not the right one to ask about mountain biking, but I didn't see any reason why you couldn't based on the terrain. Sometimes the trailheads have restrictions about what kind of traffic is allowed (horses, bikes, foot traffic, etc.) but I wasn't looking for that info when I was there, so I can't really say.

      It should be no problem. It's a nice wide road all the way up, and I did see lots of families up there.

    heading towards Echo Lake...he says "kinda boring." Misses the trees for the forest.

    • @downtoearthadventures1528
      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před 3 lety

      Grace, you're right, I did say that. There's just something boring about that 0.6 section of trail heading down to the lake. It's a steady downhill with lots of rocks and it makes you miss the forest and the trees because you're looking at your feet the whole time. LOL

    McDonalds at the end ruined your video. Just kidding, very well done. Your journey was very nice. A lot to see while only needing to walk just over 10 miles round trip. I know we all like to be isolated when out in the forest, away from humans and noise. The only way you can achieve that these days in a public outdoor adventure setting like this is to bushwack

    • @downtoearthadventures1528
      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, this really a nice hike if you can go there when it's not crowded. Maybe it's better to go here mid-week since this spot is so popular. I'm not sure this hike was really hard enough for me to earn the double burger at the end though. I may have to start filming myself eating some post-hike salads from now on. LOL

  • @iplaythebestgames3080

    Would I need bear spray staying here solo overnight?

    • @downtoearthadventures1528
      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před rokem

      You don't need bear spray here. But it's always a good idea to either hang your food or store it in a container away from camp. Don't forget about the mice and squirrels. They're hungry too. LOL

      Not surprised, the hotel and the peak were always crowded with day-hikers even before covid. And I'll bet the lake got more popular too.

    camping protocols. think of it like parking in a malls parking lot with a very nice car. you want your space. and no matter how far away from the crowd you park, all by yourself, when you come back, theirs at least one car parked right besides yours!!! Obviously their is this logic that some people have, safety in numbers. i get it, but boy is it aggravating.

    • @downtoearthadventures1528
      @downtoearthadventures1528  Před 3 lety +1

      Lesson learned, I guess. A great campsite is not really yours unless you're actually standing on it. LOL
