- In Monster Lab 12, Ed shows you how to paint your Halloween Mask using just a brush. In the previous instructional episode he showed how to use an airbrush to paint, but if you do not have an airbrush you can use the brush painting method. It has been my dream since I was a kid stealing glances at Creepy mags at the grocery store to make my own latex mask. Not having the airbrush equipment was always an obstacle but seeing this I realize it isn't necessary. Bucket list updated, thank you so much!
Wonderful! Wishing you all the best as you explore mask making. Hello from the Distortions Unlimited crew and let us know how things go for you.
Thank you Ed, I really appreciate you taking the time to make these video's.
Hey Ed, painting my first ever selfmade latexmask with your paintmix, I can not believe that it works! Since I'm living in Austria I don't have access to Monster Makers latex, so I made the mask (and 1/3 of the paint mix) out of a somewhat non-descript liquid latex, so I'm blown away that, at least right now, the base coat of skin color sticks to the mask perfectly.
Even more incredible is that the mix actually feeds through my beginner's airbrush which usually clogs really easy.
EDIT:
So, the paintjob is completely done now, still amazed that it worked! Used a mix of brush painting with regular brushes and make up brushes and airbrushing. Ended up blending not only housepaint but also airbrush paint and regular acrylic with latex, all works fine, is flexible and doesn't rub off (unless you're trying real hard).
Thanks to you and another youtuber I managed to finish this first ever paid commission for a co worker of mine for halloween! So thanks a ton!
I'm very surprised on how professional it looks for a basically diy at home tutorial, specially with that brown wash tecnique, looked amazing and is great to see this tecnique's also a lot faster than using airbrush and stuff ! thanks again, Ed ! you're the new Dick Smith for all of us who love the monster world :D
Hi Chazz! That is very nice of you, however, I am not even close to the amazing Dick Smith [Who used to help me by recommending his best students who had just graduated his course.] I'm closer to a Bob Ross kinda guy, showing you how to easily make "happy little monsters..." THANKS!!!
I love how every product you guys make ends up with its own elaborate back story, thank you for all the content
Endless graditude to the masters of monster makers!
Amazing! You are so talented. this will be so helpful to me in my latest costume, thanks for making this video for us "low-techies"

Love these videos! I can't seem to find part two where you show the process of pouring the latex.
czcams.com/video/GG1A70LsiVo/video.html This is a different mask but shows us pouring the latex in the mold. Thanks so much!
Could you please try to make a gruesome sheet ghost costume this October? Give it a skeletal grin with with tears in his shroud that indicate how he died. Try to imagine a bed sheet that is confirmed the shape of a mummy, that’s what it looks like.
Unintentional ASMR

Nice job I love it 😻 I would like to know what kind of pain do you use ? I have an old mask but I would like to change the color to flesh tone

ZOMBIE ANDORIANS!!! AAAAAAH!!!
Thank you for the video! Could one use acrylic for the base layer instead of house paint in the mixture?
YES!
Great video, thank you. I'm about to paint my own latex mask, just one little tip, since I'm European I have some difficulties translating the rubbing alcohol technique to make shadows. 2 ounces of color in a quarter ( of gallon?) of 70% rubbing alcohol. Is that right?
Can u use just regular liquid latex to mix with the paint ?
Do these paint techniques also work with making animatronics/props, also what foam/latex do you guys use for your frigthtronics
Yes they do, we use the same techniques on our animatronics and props.
Hello!! How to you keep the brushes not getting hard while you paint? Or when you are waiting for it to dry ?
Just rinse them with water!
Got a question. If you use the rub down technique with paint/water alone, then won't that crack later on?
How do you keep from getting latex balls in the brush and the paint?
That Alien look like Sylvester Stalone :)
