Cleaning an engine bay can scare many people, but it’s quite safe if you follow the basic steps. Just don’t shoot high pressured water in the engine bay. Use a regular garden hose or a pressure washer on its lowest setting when rinsing.
    ►Preparation:
    1) Wear gloves and eye protection.
    2) Disconnect your battery leads. Reconnect them when the job is done.
    3) Make sure all the caps and lids are properly sealed and that the engine oil dipstick isn’t loose.
    4) If you have an older car (prior to 2007) make sure you cover any exposed with plastic bags or wrap them with aluminum foil: alternator, distributor, electrical components, exposed air filters, etc.
    5) Always work in a garage or on a cloudy day, never under direct sunlight so that the products don’t dry up.
    6) When you’re done detailing the engine bay, start the engine up and let the car run for a couple of minutes to dry any residual water that might still be in the engine bay.
    ►Engine bay detailing steps:
    1) Spray your favorite degreaser on the underside of the hood and let it dwell for a couple of minutes. Use brushes to clean the underside of the hood.
    2) Rinse.
    3) Rinse the engine bay to remove loose dirt and contaminants.
    4) Spray your favorite degreaser in the engine bay and let it dwell for a couple of minutes.
    5) Clean the engine bay with brushes.
    6) Rinse.
    7) Dry the engine bay using either microfiber drying towels or air dryers/leaf blowers. Make sure it’s completely dry.
    8) Detail the engine bay by spraying a dressing to restore faded plastics and give it that brilliant shine and freshly detailed look.

Pan, simply a great video!! I think that this is one of the most missed areas on a car. You can tell the skill level of a detailer by the engine compartment. So many times you see a gorgeous car and under the hood looks like they used the hood for a scoop shovel and the engine compartment to store the dirt! With these great tips anyone can make theirs look great. Thanks for sharing!

So, for better service at the dealership, do this. Also, the fluid levels can be see so much easier with a clean engine bay. Have fun Ice Fishing in Canada, Mr. Pan-Awesome !

I am so looking forward to cleaning my engine bay this weekend.. In my younger years, you could eat off any surface of my cars. I used to leave a thin layer of wax on all painted surfaces in the engine bay. Every time I waxed my car, which was a few times a year, I would remove the wax from the prior time and add another thin layer. I used a spray wax, so it was easy to remove even after sitting that way for months.

I think it depends on the car. Like he said any car within the last 10 years should be ok. Plus some cars like mine has the battery in the trunk so I wouldn't disconnect it. But my truck has it in the front exposed so me personally I would remove the battery.

Excellent! What else can I say? I have a stock 1970s coupe. Glad you mentioned the 10-year or younger timeframe for engine bay detailing according to your method because I was concerned about spraying water and degreasers in there. Long story short, yesterday, I took some damp cloth towels (and some dry ones) and wiped everything down (first time I've ever detailed an engine room). No chemicals, just water. It's not showroom ready, but it looks much better now than before. Taking great care, next time, I'll likely use some of your tips and tricks to make my engine room look a bit nicer than it does now. Don't want to mess anything up since replacement parts are hard to find for some older cars. And labor isn't cheap.

      @PanTheOrganizer  Před 2 lety

It’s not that you don’t need to. You need to use common sense when detailing engine bays. On recent cars (less than ten years old), engine bays are usually water tight. On older cars, there might be more exposed sensitive electronics, alternators, etc.
If you are in doubt, cover sensitive parts with plastic baggies and never focus the water on the same spot for too long. Keep the water moving.
