Holy whaaaaattttt...... dude this is the guy who wrote Outliers.... that’s awesome that Jimmy got him on his show

I read outliers in Hs (over ten years ago) and I’ve loved his work ever since.
clayton martin Elmira?
@@lucaskidd I love how all Ontarians already know he's from Elmira. Malcolm Gladwell is an icon. :)
He also wrote the Tipping Point; his books are fascinating.
Now here’s a good idea for a talk show, have guests who actually know a thing or two and have something interesting to say!
And yes I know Malcolm Gladwell, was introduced to his book “Tipping Point” in college and I’m still interested in his thinking.

It’s called podcasts
It's about time talk shows started bringing back more cerebral people for interviews. Writers, poets, painters, artists. Philosophers. Like how they used to back in the 70s and before.
Yes!! Totally agree. The only problem is the format is so shortened we don't get enough time with them.
I'd prefer scientists tbh. Ones like Brian Cox who can talk about why time moves in one direction rather than a philosopher speculating. Everyone should be a painter, poet and artist so not sure why they'd be on a talk show.
@@deemagee6827 Sure, I'm all about seeing scientists as well. Actually, anybody with anything fresh and interesting to say. Subjects that tickle the ol' gray matter. I think the Brits still follow in that tradition, and that's probably why I watch many of their shows.
Agree OP, but you notice how much time Gladwell spent stroking Kimmel's ego and persona? That's why he gets invited back.

Cool stuff, you need more guests like this Jimmy. Much more interesting than learning what a celebrity’s favorite color is.
I couldn't disagree with this lol

"Talking to strangers" is a book which depicts the complexities we face in understanding the nature of strangers. The author goes from stories and case studies of world best spies to the increasing suicides and crime rates.
He infers that it is almost impossible to comprehend a stranger.
This is a vast book covering vast levels of social and psychological topics which are missunderstood most of the time. I think everyone should read it.
There's alot to learn in this book.
He looks real. He looks comfortable in his skin, his clothes. He looks fit. He's fkn intelligent and he's an intellectual. He's not sitting there worrying when his next appointment with the plastic surgeon is. Bravo!
He's also a pretty serious runner.
Yeah, and Malcolm looks that way too!

It's called plagiarism.
when's the last time an author was on a talk show?
Probably back in the 70's- any chat show since then are only ever either singers or actors.
@@evesapple Tons of political books, though.
Michael Lee Last week.
Every week on Bill Maher's show
So many times on Trevor Noah's show
I'm currently reading Outliers and that book has changed in many ways how I perceive life itself.
I had a civics teacher who prided herself on her unerring ability to judge people and she said than an entire demographic of students were habitual liars because they wouldn't look her in the eye when they spoke to her. Of course, this entire demographic of students had been raised to treat looking directly at adults as disrespectful. In this example, the only members of that group she needed to be wary of were those she most likely would have trusted.
He’s one of my favorite humans. He has really offered humanity a different perspective.
More authors on talk shows please!!
He’s so good at explaining things to those of us with merely average intelligence
I like the part where he says it’s impossible to try and describe the plot of an episode of Friends. It would take many pages of flow charts.
Malc is average
I'm pretty sure Friends fed my depression. "Why don't I have friends like that?"
Because you have a real life.
@@dozog yes, and it's a lot better now too. There's a great article out there on how Friends destroyed Western Civilisation - it has some real good points.

This is what I miss about Craig Ferguson (of the Late Lata Show with Craig Ferguson who was on before James Corden took over): Craig used to interview people who weren’t actors/directors. So many interesting interviews were made in that show.
I loved Craig Ferguson..you're right, awesome interviews, miss it so much!
Craig was/is great, but he wanted to produce some money maker$.
He likely wanted to play the whole ''not like other guys'' card but it just didn't work for me hahaha
I really like Gladwell, he's a great thinker but is great at making things easy to understand.
Casey Douglas that’s very true
Seriously. He has the rare gift of clear communication. In his books (which are written with such nice style), his podcasts and apparently in person too!
Do you mean that "Lie to me” actually lied to me?
That was micro expression this is different
Well, you asked for it.
Good one
Paul Ekman was the advisor to the show and he co- discovered micro-expressions. The show was factually a correct but the time span to solve the case was compressed to be able to wrap up the crime in 1 hour. In really life the span for solving could be weeks, months and even years.
Dr Ekman has many books out but take a look at "Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit". It's fascinating stuff!
Hugo Bacelar Yes and no. It is possible to read ppl like that but NOT AT ALL how they show it in the show. The person can’t know that you are reading them. The way that the main character does it would be completely useless. He’s way too in their face. He’d have to observe them at an at ease state. So they would give things away without knowing it. But this isn’t what I think Gladwell meant. I think he meant it more in an “gut reaction” sort of way. And, unless honed, can be very misleading. I wouldn’t be surprised that in the book, if he says our own ideas and conceptions influence us more than what we know. That we see what we want to see. That’s pure speculation thou. Just saying based on what he’s written before. His style of giving information. Just a guess thou.
That was an A++ interview right there. Reminded me of the days of Letterman and Carson.

@@IM4fLEX Lol, next time I run into him :)
This summed up what I've finally started to understand over the past couple of years. So much of the time, the way actors emote on-screen are exaggerated and unrealistic; their expressions look so genuine that they're actually disingenuous. People are far more subtle and nuanced in real life, and if you use performed content as a model for communication you will probably be considered phony.
I love Malcolm Gladwell's audiobooks, his are some of the few that I actually listen to from beginning to end.
This was great - informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking! Please give us more segments like these. Promoting books/ reading is a wonderful mission.

His books were life changing for me. Several of his podcasts in Revisionist History rank as some of my all time favorites. Brilliant guy that allows me to understand complicated stuff. My favorite non-fiction author.
There should be a new friends spin off called "acquaintances."

The mismatched thing is very interesting. I can self diagnose that when I first meet someone (especially a potential employer or client) I am perfectly matched. But once I am comfortable with someone I am the person with arms crossed and a frown that is happy and having a great time.
Why is that? I'm curious, why are you subconsciously showing body language that is the opposite from how you feel inside?
@@PropertyVlogsUK Yes. It's almost like your 'energy' doesn't match. I personally feel really uncomfortable around ppl I don't match with.

Mr Gladwell is a living legend. I’ve read all of his books!
Imagine seeing THEE Malcolm Gladwell on a talkshow and focusing on his appearence. This man is awesome. I have read ALL of his books, his blogs, his pieces, he's very informed
the irony is , that people like the actors portraying the characters on friends , would never be that close in real life
They would be too jealous of each other.
I’ve really struggled with this my entire life. I can’t wait to read his book.

If you get a chance to see him in person definitely go, and bring your loved ones along because they'll Thank you.
Where do you live? Most strangers I cross paths with are engaging and bring a new awareness. Meaningful encounters, at times just as transformative as an interchange with a good friend.
Thank you Jimmy. Good match, you and Malcolm. Gladwell is simply telling us that the knowledge gained in the time invested in our interpersonal relationships can not be generally applied to those we do not know and have not spent time... strangers. People in general are familiar or, unfamiliar. Therefore, with some exceptions, treat them as such.
He talks about it on Oprah’s podcast. His observations are AMAZING and heartbreaking at the same time.
This guy is fascinating. I could listen to him all day.
He has a point...there is no normal. We are all different and unique. Talk to your neighbor or friend, just because someone doesn't appear to to be engaged or interested does not mean that they are not listening or interested.
Just finished listening to the audiobook...going to listen to it again on a road trip this weekend.

This guy is brilliant, and funny on top of it.
I just finished Talking to Strangers and OH MY GOD IT BLOWS ME UP

Love his books! So glad you had him on the show!
This guys so good at explaining stuff. Love this interview!
The subject of this new book is something quite obvious, because we know that all people wear masks and don't show who they really are especially in public, this is such an old, familiar truism. But somehow people tend to forget about it. I have long had reflections on the fact that in today's era of media obsession, social media power, we are extremely vulnerable to believe in false accusations plus wrong and consequently tragic 'reading' of other people, because social media is conducive to fast and thoughtless judgment and spreading of stereotypical thinking about others, strangers. And it's dangerous.
BLINK is one of his more underrated books. Absolutely love it. People talk about Outliers and Tipping Point. But Blink had me hooked.
I had no idea what to expect from this video. At the beginning, I thought it would be boring. At the moment I was going to click away from this, it turned into one of the more fascinating conversations I've ever seen. I really feel like I've learned something. I am not familiar with any of Malcolm Gladwell's work (though I've heard the name before) but he is very interesting!
I listened to the audiobook, it was an amazing experience I enjoyed every minute of it. His narration was so engaging and raised the bar for the way audiobooks are produced in my opinion.

Re "matched." He's referring to congruence or in-congruence or our various aspects visual, verbal, etc.. Applies to self-self and self-other. Basically all decoded by NLP originators in the late 70s. Still valid and worth learning now.
Weird to try to apply it to sitcom acting though
This one was probably one of the few ones where Jimmy Kimmel was being a genuine person.
Fascinating!
This is so brilliant 🤣🤣🙌🙌 can't wait to get the book
I think the vast majority of people understand that Friends/sitcoms are not like the real world. I mean it's scripted, there's a laugh track, all the jokes work, there are no awkward silences, every minute is interesting, everyone is relevant... In fact the reason people like the show is precisely because it's NOT like real life, it's much more fun.
I think you're severely overrated the intelligence of humankind you're living in a universe where people think wrestling is real I think you're the one that needs to get a grip on reality
It's actually pretty ironic becuase Gladwell is well-known for being incredibly misleading in his books. For example, he'll often take a small result from a study and talk about it like it's gospel truth.
@@Iambriangregory LOL fair. But I don't think the average person thinks wrestling is real, it's a small minority.
@@AllThingsElementor if it's well known I surely didn't know about it. Turn the sound off and watch friends.......just after I had turned my sound off while watching friends.. Aawwwwwwwww 😳😳😳😳 Malcolm is in my head!!!!
I don't know that most of needed him to tell us that 'Friends" is not a depiction of how people are in real life. It's a sitcom, and the characters and plots are absurd to make us laugh. WE ALREADY KNOW THAT.
Good video, I enjoyed his perspective.
The problem with Malcolm Gladwell is so much of what he says is "everyone is wrong about everything except I've figured it all out"... then a few years later he'll be like "Oh, I may've been wrong about that thing I said." Dude still hasn't figured out Presentation For the Situation...I'm relatively certain he's not more expert at reading human behavior than the other experts.

Yes, his utterances are more important in most ways, but I perceive that he cares a great deal about his appearance himself, and cultivates his look very carefully.
Very cool interview!
His book Outliers really blew my mind.. You are an excellent Researcher. 👍
I thought writers don't have a vibrant personality. But he can have a very good dialogue.
0:33 I feel like people still haven't grasped the difference between the word "unconscious" and the word "subconscious" ..
When you're unconscious you are NOT awake.
When you are awake and you take in things in the world WITHOUT NOTICING it is done on a subconscious level ..
@All_Roads They have become synonymous, because people stopped to understand the difference or stopped caring about being precise.
@All_Roads No i don't.
You will see that most dictionaries have both meanings of the word "unconscious".
Do you also say someone hit you subconscious, or do you still say someone hit you unconscious?
(If you don't, then the words simply share one meaning, but are not synonymous)
The meaning of words change organically. Eventually dictionaries will record the current meaning of words... as used by the majority.
You can stop pretending that dictionaries, or any specific dictionary, are lawbooks or the gospel.
Really interesting interview!
