  • This is a recording from a live webinar that I hosted where I talked about and showed some of the gear that I use to shoot headshots on location and when I travel. Portions have been edited out that aren't related to the content because they including selling products in my online store and the discount codes were time sensitive.

    Gary! This was a to the point, quickly done presentation. You've got energy for days. I thought I was well prepared, to the point of compulsiveness. I'd want to be in your foxhole for sure. I've been trying to pare down my portable kit and I'm tired of using six speedlites! This was great, You're great! Thanks for the info.

    My kit list is almost identical, I love it. Its so reliable and easy to use. I recently upgraded to the AD300Pro for my main lights and use the AD200Pros for background and hair lights. I will regularly shoot 100 plus headshots in a day and have never had to change batteries during a shoot.
    I also use the tethertools air direct wireless system, to transfer images to my laptop. The system works seamlessly and is incredibly fast. I stopped using cables after needing to get the usb connection on my cameras repaired, repeatedly. I kept losing connection but when I changed to the air direct it solved all my problems.

      I have been really looking hard at the Ad300pros, they look excellent. Probably gonna get at least one for my main light. I haven’t tested the air direct (when I recorded this webinar in 2018 it hadn’t been released) but I hear great things

      @@GaryHughesOfficial I switched from the 360's to the Ad300's and I love everything about them. Adorama has the twofer kit, that I got which came with a rolling case. Then I added a third light to it. They have not disappointed!

    Great video Gary. You do look like a super hero. I'm sure you are to your kids. That's a great idea about the water bottles. I'll have to check out Westcott's and Savage's portable back drop systems. Thank you!!!

    Hey Gary, looking for a tripod ball head to support my Nikon d4s and 70-200 lens. Do you still recommend the manfrotto 322rc2 joystick? Would that work for me or is there something better you could recommend? I see Peter Hurley is into the arca swiss po’s.

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před rokem +1

      I still use the same one, works great. Tripod heads are like cars, though. Everyone has a favorite one, tough to recommend with confidence. All I can say is I love mine. It comes down to muscle memory, when you don’t have to think about how it works anymore, you can grow accustomed to any kind.

    Hey Gary, thanks for another great video? have you or would you recommend going from the AD200 to the AD100?

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před 2 lety +1

      Not as a main light source for most work, no. Half the power for the same price. The 100 is a specific tool that I think is best for ultra light travel work or photographers who shoot mostly available light and need a boost in a pinch

  • @kennethjonesphotography

    I really appreciated this great direct-to-the-point video. I also appreciated the practical "odds and ends" section, particularly the info about using the green gaffer's tape to direct the subjects. The only question I have is which laptop do you tether to? I'm in the middle of the muddle trying to decide whether or not I can successfully use a base model MacBook Air with the M1 chip, 8GB RAM, and a 516GB SSD. I'll also be storing all photos on a LaCie 2TB external SSD during a shoot so as not to overload the laptop's SSD. By the way, I'm not going to use the laptop to edit; only as a tethering device. Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply.

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před rokem +1

      My general experience withe Apple silicon is that they essentially function as if they have twice the memory as the intel Macs. The 16 GB feels a lot more like the 32 GB etc. I think for straight tethering that you might be okay with the base model, but RAM is like buying a TV, you always wish you had gone bigger. As far as the external drive, I shoot to one most of the time, but using C1, if the drive becomes disconnected mid flow, it can corrupt the catalogue so I usually taped the cables to give them some extra security. Thanks for watching!

    • @kennethjonesphotography
      @kennethjonesphotography Před rokem

      @@GaryHughesOfficial I totally agree about the RAM. I bought my 27" iMac earlier this year and immediately boosted the RAM to 40GB. So, considering your comment and having given more thought to this issue, I've decided to buy the 14" MacBook Pro M1 with 16GB RAM. As for the tether issue, I appreciate your suggestion. Thanks.

    Trying to decide between the x-drop or a pop-up version backdrops. Curious if you had to pick one, which one is more effective for most jobs?

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před 2 lety +1

      I use the X-drop mostly. It is very versatile and portable. Pop-ups can be a little bigger so I might use it if I need to shoot more than one person. Hope that helps

    Just stumbled across this - wonder about the AD200 flash how mny you carry as I like to have 3-4 speedlites available in case needed on a location shoot

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před 3 lety +2

      I have 3 AD200’s, a V1, and an AD100 pro. For most gigs I use 2, maybe 3 lights and reflectors for fill. I have done loads of shoots with only 1 light, all depends on what they want and how big a space they give you to work in.

      @@GaryHughesOfficial awesome really appreciate the feedback! Ive been scraping by on Yongnuo speedlites the past 3 years always eyeing up something with more power for when im triple diffusing for super soft lighting

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před 3 lety +2

      I worked with Canon Speedlites until 2 years ago. Speedlites can do the job, it’s just a pain to deal with recycle times and battery life. Either way Godox gives you great solutions to both those problems as well as access to a huge range of modifiers. I recommend (if you are in the USA) that you by from a distributor like Adorama as the Flashpoint brand to get better service and support :)

    Great video. I have 2 of everything almost. 2 cameras(actually 4 of them), 2 of a few lenses like the 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm. You can't tell a client oh my camera or lens broke, I can’t take no more photos. Always be prepared. I have 3 triggers for just in case cuz I already broke 2 of them by my fault. And i took a 12 hour trip to do a wedding in ocean city and flipping forgot my trigger for my strobe lights. What did i do? I used my godox speedlight v1 as a trigger to control all my strobe lights. You can also put them in slave mode and they will work too. God bless godox for having those features

    Oh one more thing! With the lastolite the main thing that bugs me are the catch lights in the eyes. How do you go about fixing this? Or do you use just one or 2 reflectors? Thanks!

    • @GaryHughesOfficial
      @GaryHughesOfficial  Před 2 lety +1

      I think you mean the tri-flector? Yeah that has some intense catch lights. My general rule for reflectors is to use white reflection rather than silver. It does a great job filling without insane catch lights. For simple headshot purposes, as long as the main catchlight is the largest and brightest, i tend not to worry about the others. All THAT being said, I have gotten to the point where I use a simple Glow refelctor panel (3x3 or 3x4) with white fabric from Adorama.

    • @deirdreryan7402
      @deirdreryan7402 Před 2 lety

      @@GaryHughesOfficial Thanks! I have a reflector panel, but I "think" it only has gold and silver. But I have several modifiers that have the multiple sides that is easily clipped/attached or put in front or below the client. I'm pretty handy with what I have already. Also you need to mention that having a basic tool kit is a good thing to have. I've come across times when I had to "re-bend" or twist something due to accidents.
