    BMW i8's produced in the EU from 1/3/2018 to present have a petrol particulate filter inside the muffler. Feedback from owners of EU produced BMW i8's report very little difference in exhaust note when modifying the exhaust in these cars. Be aware, if your car was produced from 1/3/2018 to present, any exhaust modification may not produce noticeable results, as the particulate filter installed inside the muffler, may be restricting exhaust noise from reaching the tail pipe, regardless if the exhaust flap is open or closed. Thank you to Fred Halvorsrød for performing the testing, research and feedback on this topic.
    I spent many weeks trying to figure out how to modify my BMW i8 exhaust. The exhaust valve is electronically actuated, and normally closed. So, I needed to figure out a way to open it and then keep it open. At first, I disconnected the actuator from the exhaust flap and wired it in place. That worked well, but I wanted a less intrusive way to keep that flap open. So, I spent time researching the BMW i8 service manual and discovered that the exhaust valve actuator was protected by a 7.5 amp fuse labeled Fuse 58. I disconnected the fuse while the flap was closed and the car never displayed a trouble code or check engine light. This was good data, as I was able to determine that pulling the fuse would not result in any annoying notifications. However, in order to keep that flap open, I would need to drive with the engine under high load (in Sport Mode at Full Throttle). I decided to try to pull the fuse by myself while operating the vehicle. What I decided on was to use a string and a 10lb weight.

      @@PatsGarageOnline Ok ( I removed the fluid piping's comment) , as you said I did google again, and the results are below:
      "Back Pressure"
      Do you need back pressure in an exhaust?
      As the pulses move along, they generate an exhaust flow. If you have a restrictive exhaust system, it can cause backpressure that works against the positive flow of the exhaust gas that's trying to exit your vehicle. ... However, a little back pressure is a good thing. In fact, it helps.
      "Exhaust Gas Flap Functions"
      In emission control, exhaust gas flaps are used to divert the exhaust gas flow. In this way, they trigger the HC (Hydrocarbon) absorbers or bring the starter catalyst to operating temperature more quickly.
      A more recent method of emission control is the use of DeNOx catalytic converters. These cause a part of the exhaust gas flow to be guided through a cooling zone by an exhaust gas flap, thus ensuring an optimum effect and a long service life of this catalyst.
      By varying the exhaust gas backpressure, the efficiency can be improved in certain characteristic areas. This is also done via an exhaust gas flap in the exhaust system.
      Exhaust gas flaps are specifically dimensioned to meet the high demands in the exhaust gas system: they must outlast gas temperatures of up to 950°C, whilst closing correctly and remaining moveable during their entire service life.

    Hi Pat. I have completed this mod and to be honest haven't noticed any difference in sound whilst driving the car but used a decibel meter and have noticed a very slight 2-3DB increase at the tailpipe whilst idling. However the one difference I have noticed is that my oil service mileage indicator is reducing a lot faster now that the fuse is out with the flap is open. Before I carried out this mod, after my oil service indicator went under 1000 miles, whatever mileage I covered with the engine running would correspond exactly with the oil service indicator. Basically like for like, if I drove 40 miles with engine running the oil service indicator would reduce by 40 miles. Since I have carried out this mod it now drops dramatically with each journey using the engine. For example it dropped from 430 to 370, a 60 mile drop when I had only driven 15 miles. Basically each time I drive using the engine now the mileage drop is no longer like for like and instead it drops by 60 miles each 15 mile trip I take to work using the engine.
    Have you noticed a similar scenario since carrying out this mod?
    I know the oil service indicator depends on numerous factors and calculations depending on how the car has been driven and how the hybrid powertrain has been utilised between services. Is it possible that this actuator controlling the flap was part of the calculation and now that it is permanently open the oil service indicator thinks my car is being driven at full throttle all the time, subsequently reducing the mileage in-between oil services?
    Love your videos about the i8 by the way and plan on carrying out the air box mod this weekend.
    Cheers Ryan

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety

      Thanks Ryan. That's interesting that you can't tell much if a difference. We're you able to look into the exhaust pipe and see the flap open, just like in my video? A couple of folks reached out to me and sent picture to my Instagram at @i8.pat so I could review them. One subscriber only had the valve half open and needed to try it again. I want to make sure yours is truly completely open.
      I was unaware of any changes in oil life in my i8, but I don't watch the meter. I change the oil every 5k miles. A turbo, direct fuel injection engine goes under a lot of stress. Fresh oil is important to me.
      I'll have to start watching the meter when the world opens back up. I haven't been driving the i8. I've been doing paint correction and other things. But I'll take a look if I start driving it again.
      Please let me know if the flap is truly all the way open. Thanks!

    • @ryansteel7189
      @ryansteel7189 Před 4 lety

      Hi Pat. I'm pretty confident the flap is open. I did multiple tests with the flap closed and open when I was testing with the decibel meter. I soon established that if I didn't pull the fuse out when I was on full throttle the flap would only remain partially open. On one particular attempt after pulling the fuse out the flap only remained partially open and ended up making a hell of a rattling noise because the passing exhaust fumes were obviously causing the flap to rattle against the side of the tailpipe or something. There's another easy way to test if the flap is open by simply sticking my fingers up the tailpipe!!!! When the flap is closed you only feel heat and exhaust gas pressure from the left side tailpipe and with the flap open you get the same amount of heat and pressure out of both pipes. When I'm carrying out the air box mod this weekend I'll get a better view with the car jacked up and send you a picture. You never know maybe once the air box mod is done it will bring the exhaust mod to life. I watched your video when you were driving and listening to the noise after you had made the mod and I never heard any difference to what my car sounded like without this mod. I've always heard the engine and exhaust noise in Eco and Comfort modes with "hold state of charge" deployed.
      Believe me I don't normally drive about keeping a constant eye on the oil service indicator but when you get under a 1000 miles to go a message pops up on the dash alerting you each time you start the car. I fall into the "key worker" category over here so have still been using my car for work and have been trying to drive as much as possible in full electric mode to save the oil life which is doing my head in. 30 mile round trip today, 19 of which in electric mode and the oil service indicator dropped from 310 to 250. It's like playing a game with it or like waiting for a time bomb to go off and really annoying especially when the car was booked in for this service at the end of March but got cancelled due to the lockdown. So that's how I've become so aware of the difference ever since I did this mod. I'm not saying it's definitely due to the flap being open but seems very coincidental.
      I'd love to change the oil more frequently but have an extended warranty with my 2014 i8 and find it costly enough having to pay BMW's extortionate prices to do so in order to keep my warranty valid. I can't even fit the wider tyres like you have done and just have to put up with the understeer. I enquired about it but it would have voided my car insurance in the UK as well as the extended warranty. When my extended warranty runs out I'll grow a set of balls and invest in a decent set of tools and carry out all the service requirements! Maybe that's wishful thinking due to how easy your videos make it look.

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety

      @@ryansteel7189 Thanks for the detailed reply. I can confidently say you went through the checks to make sure it was open, especially if you heard the rattling noise. That doesn't always happen in a half-open flap but it's more likely that it will because there is less pressure between the actuator and the flap, mid-travel. Sometimes, I get questions from folks who aren't as knowledgeable as you. But you are clearly ahead of the game on this, so I trust your judgement that the flap is indeed open.
      I wasn't aware you were in the UK. Does your exhaust have a Particulate Filter on it? In the US, we do not, and I honestly don't even know what it looks like, but if it's there, I wonder if it's helping silence the exhaust.
      It makes sense, now, why the oil life is something you are concerned about. I would advise putting the fuse back in the panel at this point, in order to rule out any variables with regard to oil life. From my knowledge, the car will adjust the oil life based on driving and performance. BMW claims that 10,000 miles is the required distance to change the oil, but we don't know what the modules are programmed to alert, since the combined gas/electric use will result in completely different miles (for example, 2,000 miles / 8,000 miles gas may not require an oil change). We (the consumer) are not aware of the actual mileage on the gas engine. That makes it difficult for me to know exactly what's happening. If you are that close to an oil change, it's possible that the car is more sensitive and/or the flap might actually have something to do with that. It might be in your best interest to re-install the fuse so you don't run over your oil change limit, because I'm very unsure if that may have an impact on it.

    • @ryansteel7189
      @ryansteel7189 Před 4 lety

      Apologies for my late reply Pat. Since I reinstated the fuse I have been trying to establish if the flap being permanently open has any impact with the mileage of the oil service idicator. The mileage of the oil service indicator seems to be a bit better and like for like with whatever mileage I have driven. However I have been driving in e drive mode only to save the life of the oil, so it's hard to say if the flap being open has anything to do with it or like you say just more sensitive as the service mileage indicator reduces. Maybe once I get the oil changed I'll try again with the fuse in and out.
      I don't have a clue if the Uk models exhaust has a particulate filter on it or not. I would normally ask the techs at BMW but they have all been furloughed due to the lockdown but will endeavour to find out now that you have mentioned it. Even if it does have it, I doubt I would be able to remove due to MOT emission test parameters in Scotland.
      On a separate note, just wondered if you ever developed a solution for the shock absorber dust covers (protective tubes) that had torn?
      I have the same issue on both rear struts and don't fancy having to pay BMW £4k to replace them especially if they are going to be made of the same flimsy material so would like to find an alternative solution.

    Very interesting video that reminds me of a similar modification that I did to my Jeep Wrangler.
    There is a fuse that protects the interior lights and needs to be pulled if the doors are removed. I replaced the fuse with a dummy that had two wires coming off which I connected together via an inline fuse and a switch. The circuit is still fused but now, when I remove the doors, I just flick the switch to stop the interior lights staying on.

    Hi Pat, another great vid. Where would be the best place to ask you a question about the i8 that is not related specifically to this video?
    Actually am just going to ask it here. I’m just over a year into my i8 ownership and wonder if you have the same problems I do with the seatbelt guides (on the sides of the front seats)? Both myself and passengers have this issue, the belt never stays within its guide meaning when you put it on you have to reach way back to get it. These seem poorly designed to me - I know they probably left the tops of the guides open so that the seatbelts wouldn’t always obstruct access to the back seats but how often do you have passengers back there anyway? Whenever I take my sealbelt off it never stays inside the guide, maybe because my shoulder level when sitting is higher than the top of it possibly, though I haven’t fully analysed this. Do you have any suggestions or perhaps even a robust solution/mod for this issue by any chance? (hint hint ;)

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for asking here. It's super easy to reply.
      I suggest that when you take the belt off you lay the belt inside the seat bolster. That means that your back will touch the seat belt. If you do this every time, the belt won't flop outside of the seatbelt guide and it also gives a neat and clean appearance when leaving the car.

    And welcome to Pat's Garage, where you will not only learn how to modify your exhaust, but you will also develop an 18" bicep.💪 😉
    Pat, did you take a page out of a comparable hack for the C6 generation's dual-mode exhaust? "Normal" operation was for them to be closed until about 3k to 3.5k rpm at which time they would automatically open. The only way to make them stay open all the time was to pull the fuse, which you did not have lto do ike what you did. You could take the fuse out even with the car turned off. FWIW, I know the C7's can override the "normally" closed valves electronically. Newer generation, newer and improved technology for sure.
    I would have preferred you used the Lady Becca over a ten pound weight though.You could have injured your Rotator Cuff! 😊 It was brilliant hack Pat! You do bring new meaning to the maxim that "There's more than one way to skin a cat." 🤣 Save the Wave.🙋🏼‍♂️

      Thanks Peter! Lady Becca has been spending all of her free time at the horse farm, prepping her horse for sale, so I'm on my own most of the time. So, I had plenty of time to figure out how I was going to test this. Unfortunately, the i8 requires the engine to be under load (according to the technical training manual), so I can't just rev it and pull the fuse, I have to drive it. I wasn't aware that the C6 also could be modified by pulling a fuse until you mentioned it. But, speaking of a rotator cuff injury, I have it. I fell asleep weirdly Wed night and I knew it, but didn't roll around. In the morning, I woke up with pain in the shoulder and it's still here. I'm on "light duty" right now, hoping for some relief, so I'm taking it easy...

      @@PatsGarageOnline As always, thank you so much for your reply. I forgot about Lady Becca's love of and responsibility to her horses.
      I did mention the Rotator Cuff in jest, but not entirely. I really injured mine while doing dips on the parallel bars. This was confirmed through an MRI that I had torn it and I was in lot of pain. Surgery had been scheduled, which I had to cancel at the very last minute due to family emergency. Anyway, with a lot of use of Advil and a great Sports Medicine MD, I came back. Well, I "came back" more in my strength than in my flexibility. But at least I was able to remove my pull-over shirts, which I previously was not able to do. I was also no longer able to throw a fast ball or a long pass, but who am I kidding, my glory days are long gone. I'll take a shirt removal any time and I don't mind be a Water Boy for the team. I can still hold my own with them in gym, as long as I stay away from the parallel bars.😁 As you stated, stay on "light duty" and eventually you'll do well.

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  Před 4 lety

      Hi Wendy. It doesn't have designated jack points outside of those plastic ones just under the rocker panels. However, the lower rear controls arms bolt to a very large aluminum sub frame. You just can't see it because the aluminum cover is installed under the car for good aero. But, I was able to put a jackstand on that area after I jacked the car on the plastic jack pad. I did this in this video: czcams.com/video/xp0KdLzJwho/video.html
      Rich Rebuilds is pointing to that area, here:
      czcams.com/video/TP8IAsPyJ58/video.html
      It's not something BMW would likely recommend, and I can't advise to protect myself against liability, but if you did decided to try jacking or using a jack stand on this area, you might consider putting something like a hockey puck between the jackstand and the vehicle to prevent marring.

    • @PatsGarageOnline

      Unfortunately, that's not possible. The internal sounds that augment the engine noise are integrated into the sound system and can't be altered. The small speaker at the back of the car won't generate engine noises below $3,000 RPM. There are aftermarket options like Maxhaust but this does not sink well with the exhaust note coming from the car.

    Cool mod but if I had an i8 and wanted more sound I'd just get an electronic sound booster upgrade. There's only so much you can do to make a 3-cylinder sound better. I've heard many aftermarket exhausts for this car and even a muffler delete - they don't improve the sound much and cost a lot. Boosting by artificial sound is the only way to make this car sound the way it looks short of an engine swap. Yes, it's fake but 90% who hear it won't know and will spare the driver an embarrassing subcompact soundtrack to an exotic looking ride.
