- This video is simply an hour of the sound of the rocket mass heater running during storm Henk. In the background you can hear the wind, rain against the windows, the occasional creak of a floorboard or reading sounds. Essentially just the sounds of the croft while we wait out a storm. Slow, deliberate living.
Anyone who's ever lived with a rocket mass heater quickly learns to associate its roar with pure comfort. If you've never experienced it yourself, this video could give you a little taste.
This burn was Scottish birch. A beautiful wood, perfectly dried. One of the joys of birch is it comes with its own firelighter in the form of the highly flammable bark. So this hour long burn heated the house for the day, used no fossil fuel, no firelighters, no electricity. Simple, sustainable, regenerative heating.
It's amazing how little wood the heater consumed in an hour long intense burn.

Excellent. I wish I had a rocket mass heater. That was a heck of a lot of heat from a small amount of fuel. Do you do one hour a day or two?
At this time of year we burn every day, but it will reduce as the house gets better insulation and drafts get closed off.

Basically, Greta is a bit of a climate (TM) warrior wunderkind and she does not like people being able to afford gas. Or wood. Or heat. Or any sources of energy in general.
