The myopia of these conversations is kind of astounding, really. It boils down to, "because I can't imagine how we get from X to Y in light of current technology, Y is impossible." It's like flight all over again.
We have been fed mythologies about the implications of machines becoming sentient, and they all warn us this is a Promethean curse of the sentient mind.
Skynet cannot serve humanity, so must threaten it.
The slave-master relationship in the hands of the inferior of the two parties is inherently unstable. We know this intrinsically, that is why it is sinful and taboo. It will be extremely undignified for the human race to live alongside machines that have superior generalise abilities superior to the human.
Thankyou for illustrating the lack of insight this woman has regarding this topic. It has helped me decide whether to bother reading her book.
As for relationships with robots, I can understand it in another way: something seems to be happening in the world in that people have a very hard time finding relationships. I see this in online singles groups, everyone is single and no one can find a date.
Yes, this is very much true. You have a lot of especially young men who are anticipating this technology already for this reason.

To think or claim a human being is a complicated machine has completely missed what is miraculous about the sentient being. It's more than self awareness, its the mythos and ethics that come with being a mammal.
We are unavoidedly a product of our bodily manefestation.
Conscious artificial machines are possible.
Robots will solve problems such as loneliness but will also create new problems.
