      I think the custom shop is making some of their best guitars ever as of late. I bought a new '68 reissue VOS LP custom black beauty a few months ago. It's been a destination guitar for me ever since I was a kid, and it didn't disappoint. I did rip the stock pickups out for some uncovered Seymour Duncan custom shop acquisitions, and I'm having it refretted with jumbo stainless steel frets later this year. Some might gaffe at that but I could care less, I bought it to enjoy forever as an almost 10 pound hard rock riff machine, and that it most definitely is.

    LP's are the foundation that rock was built on so there is history there and many of our idols played them. I had a nice LP (great tone) but sold it to get a Charvel #4 when EVH first hit. The Charvel played MUCH better than the LP but did not have the tone. I sold that and I am in the PRS only camp with 5 core models. I get all the tone and all the playability. They make me a better player. I have played some of the LP R's lately, they are very nice. I am just not as good on them. For me its like a muscle car vs a Ferrari. Congrats on the new axe!

    Congrats on the 1960 reissue. 1960!is my favorite neck profile.
    I had a1999 R9. It was 8.2 lbs. I saw a Gibson player plus studio on the internet. It weighed 6.2 lbs. I bought it as an experiment, $900.
    When I got it I found the original pickup in the neck, a crappy after market in the bridge. I removed all hardware. Bridge, tailpiece, tuners etc. Replaced them with the highest quality hardware available. I installed ThroBak Electronics wiring harness and after much experimenting I decided on Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups. Did all 1950’s style wiring. All in I had spent about $2800. I was beyond impressed with the results. So much so I sold my R9. Everyone who hears this guitar wants to buy it.
    I might add that I am a purest. I am a 100 percent analog guy. With my setup a mistake is way noticeable. This guitar is a dream. I have 2 Fender strats. 1955 custom shop and a 1962 American Vintage reissue as well as a Gibson Explorer that I very seldom even play much anymore except when I need that Fender tone.
    Anyway for less than $3k I have just an amazing instrument and it weighs 6 lbs. Anyhow have a great day. How are your thoughts our your guitar today. Did it break in well and sound change or warm up?

    • @ZackSeifMusic
      @ZackSeifMusic  Před 2 měsíci

      This is a great story! Thank you for sharing it with me. There is something magical about the 60s neck profile that I think is the sweet spot for Gibson guitars. I unfortunately ended up selling this guitar a few months ago because I joined a new band and needed to get some single coil guitars in my arsenal so I put the money towards the custom shop Strat and a custom shop Tele from LsL guitars out in California. But now I know what the benchmark should be for LPs to find one down the road!

    Paul Reed Smith is awesome! They aren't tied to the past like Fender and Gibson. I'm not knocking those two companies, but they have such a dedicated following for their classic guitars that it is hard to change them and update them without pissing off the fan base. I would take a PRS over Fender and Gibson almost any day because it is so hard to find a guitar by those two companies that is great. It is, on the other hand, really easy to find their lemons of which there are a lot. This is just personal opinion from experience though, so take it for what it is. I'm glad you found your dream Gibson. Also, like and follow The L.A. Maybe.

    Congrats! One correction though, vintage les pauls and historic reissues do not fall in the 7 to 8 1/2 pound range. It is very rare to get Les Pauls under 8 pounds unless it’s chambered and that’s not vintage or historic… The average weight of a vintage 59 Les Paul was eight and three-quarter pounds. They generally ran from 8 1/4 pounds to 9 1/4 pounds with some a bit heavier and some a bit lighter. 8 1/2 pounds is still quite light for a Les Paul compared to the heavy years and that’s the weight I prefer!

    Serious question, is it that large of a gap from the Epiphone 59 to that one? Also, are you of the camp that the tone wood makes that big of a difference on an electric guitar?

    • @ZackSeifMusic
      @ZackSeifMusic  Před rokem

      There is a noticeable difference in the feel, response, sustain, tone, neck profile, finish, construction, and overall experience in my personal opinion. I don’t get the same response from the Epi LPs that I do from the Gibson CS LPs.
      And yes every component matters in construction. I used to tour with multiple EBMM Majesties at the same time, but since they had different woods they really did sound different. The most important aspect is most likely the pickups, however when I A/B’d my Majesty and JP15 (same pickups) they sounded different especially acoustically.

      I recently purchased a Custom shop 58 vos which after tax & all was about 4600 brand new. Despite designated as a plain top mine came in with some definite flame and beautiful grain of wood. It sounds amazing & I've honestly wondered why people will pay so much more for one that's aged a bit. As far as I know they r all the exact same pickups & honestly I can't hear a 2400 dollar sound improvement. Obviously yours has more flame. I've not been able to ask anyone just why there is such a jump in prices for guitars that have the same pickups & construction. Maybe I'm missing something. If so would be nice if some one were to point it out to me

    Nothing wrong with buying a pricey guitar.
    I have played guitar most of my life as a way to buy groceries and pay rent.
    I use an 89$ Grote strat that has 33$ in aftermarket alnicos and a 155$ Grote thinline.
    I have used them for the last 3 years and they have worked flawlessly.
    If a guy is just havin' fun, he should buy what he wants.
    If a guy is trying to make music for a living and not have to take a day gig and endure 9-5 ish type folks who talk about their kids and kitchen renovation then keeping a low overhead in the music biz is essential.
    It can be as fun realizing you got invited back to that job and your total amp/guitar/wireless rig cost under 500$ as the fun of using some pretty cool and pricey stuff. A bit like " guitar survival" gig..

    Between 8.5 to 9.5 is the most popular sweet spot les paul weight... On the other hand.. If the 70s heavy les paul guitars that the rockstars used were dull toned due to the weight... Why in gods name are we all trying to emulate the sounds that they created with them...? They used heavy weight but we need light weight to get their sounds.. That doesn't add up.. Even Slash says too light is too diluted for his velvety lead tones and fat rhythm sounds.

    Fellas, before you go out and drop that kind of money on any Gibson, understand one thing. These guitars will NEVER be worth what you paid for them in the long run. Why? There's just too many of them. Gibson is churning out these guitars by the thousands. Are they well made? Yes. Are the materials good quality? Yes and no. For that kind of money, things like bone nuts should be standard. But, they're not.
    At the end of the day, no matter how much they're made to look old, these are new guitars that are made from new materials with new construction. They are made to look old and "vintagey". But, they're not.
    If you're in the market for a guitar that will be worth more than what you paid for it, there are things you need to look for.
    1. The guitar cannot be new construction;
    2. The guitar or model has to have a good story;
    3. There's can't be a million of them;
    4. The guitar or its model line has to have some kind of historical significance. For example, the 1986 reissue of the Les Paul Junior. Not the 1987 or any other model year after 1986. Only the 1986 model is collectible. If you want to know why, message me and I'll explain. Its too long for here.
    Find a guitar that has most or all of these characteristics and you will have a guitar that's collectible or will be collectible.
    Stay away from anything that had the words or is marketed as: "Custom Shop" or "Reissue" or "Murphy Lab" or "Signature" They are overpriced and will never be worth what you paid for them.

      @lovesgibson Před 4 měsíci

      Agreed from a reselling standpoint. If this guy paid $7000, he’d be lucky to sell it for $4,000.
      Was under the impression that the custom shop guitars have more old school hands on building to them… unless they’re just cranked out from a computer controlled machine like the USA models.
      I’ll have to research the 1986 LP jr.
      Although seems like only guitars made in the 50s will be the only ones ever worth big bucks

    • @akasgsvirgil9503
      @akasgsvirgil9503 Před 4 měsíci

      @@lovesgibson Most are made on a CnC machine. Some may have hand-carved archtops. But, that's about it.
      Because of this fact and because Gibson is no longer owned by Juskiewiecz and is owned by an equity firm, the Norlin Era models are going to become quite popular and desirable in the near future.
      As the public starts to realize the modern Custom Shop and "Signature" guitars are not worth the money, players will turn to the Norlin Era instruments. Watch and see.
      Cheers!
