- Earlier this year, former British Army Sniper Craig Harrison appeared on our originals series, 'Minutes With' ( • How I Broke The World ... ).
He spoke about dangerous missions throughout his career, as well as his post-army life and struggles with PTSD.
In this episode of Right To Reply, Craig returns to @LADbible to respond to some of the thousands of comments left on his original film. He answers questions on mental health, speaks openly about his suicidal thoughts, and shuts down internet trolls.

It's very sad, that a man of his ability/integrity, needs to justify his responses to trolls on the internet. This guy is an awesome fella. I hope he lives a prosperous life.

He doesn’t have to justify it. He chooses to do so in order to continue to bring awareness. As much good as he may have done with the first video, I’d image one would go back and do another video on the topic ASAP. Even if just one more person opens to the concept of getting help than it’s worth it.
@@lukef2987 yeah, from these comments there are a bunch of people who already justified for him. but im glad he still took the time to do such a thing. there are people like that in the world, they play too much CoD and get a kick out of shooting some A.I yet are the same ones who would fail to pull a trigger on someone else in order to save their own life. unfortunate how people are like that.
People like these will always have a sad and miserable life. They will never achieve something worthwhile in their lives and therefore they hide behind their online profile. You can't justify anything to them.

To call a war hero a "p***y" says nothing about the war hero and everything about the pos that said it. This veteran has my unyielding respect. I thank God that his wife and his dog kept him here for us. 🙏❤️
Thank you for your service! I'm a Vietnam Vet, US Marines, 3-tours in Country. I too tried to commit suicide once, came to one morning from a heavy night of drinking with a loaded rifle in my mouth. Safety off, trigger slack take up, thumb on the Trigger. I passed out just before I pulled the trigger. That was over 50-years ago. I'm an old man now seeing life much different than I did then. PTSD is real and it's easy to loose hope. Getting help helped turn my life completely around. I too took several hard hits to the head over there that effect me even today, but I've learned how to adjust to them.
I'm retired now, a widow living in Arizona with a feral cat I found in the desert. We're best buddies. Her name is Growler, she doesn't know how to meow. When I found her the first thing she did was growl at me. So I named her Growler and she followed me home. When I go for walks she's right by my side just like a dog. My neighbors think that's the coolest thing they have ever seen. And if she doesn't like someone she sees, she growls at 'em.

That’s true that. You hold in your emotions for so long that it just builds up until you can’t hold it in. My best mate was in the army and done a tour in Afghanistan. I’ve known him all my life and even so he’s only opened up to me about it in drips and drabs over the years. He’s a big f-king unit and the bravest strongest person I know. When he’s told me about the bad stuff he’s seen out there it’s a good job he’s crying to me as he says it. Because if he was smiling and enjoying what he was telling me I would be very very afraid.

What a difficult job that man has had, and it IS a job, not a hobby. Nobody would choose this career for the fun of it, the sacrifices you have to make, the actions you carry out, the awful things you witness, being away from your family and home, he is selfless and brave for doing it. Fuck anyone who calls this man weak, he is a SURVIVOR.

It is quite incredible isn't it? When I saw the first video I felt a huge amount of empathy and respect for this chap. The last thing that came in to my mind was "Oh I know, I am going to leave a nasty comment".
In fact, the first thing that came to my mind was, "what a lovely man, I want other people to see this film".
Sadly, whenever you put yourself in the public space you are going attract criticism from twats.
You know why you made such an impact? Because you were genuinely vulnerable. And that touches more people, and in a much deeper way, than being tough and acting like nothing phases you. A lotta people are In pain and if a big guy like you, who has seen true hell, can cry and admit his hardships and pains, then maybe it's ok for them, these men and women, to admit it as well. You are a beautiful soul mate.
Can you imagine the kind of pathetic weasel that watched the first video and then went and called him a "pussy?" This softly spoken giant of a man with one hell of a life story talking about his struggles with trauma is about the farthest thing from a "pussy" imaginable. I like that he just shut it down too. He didn't just demur or push it aside, he tackled it head on and shut it down. He knows himself and what he's worth - a giant of a man in more ways that one.
And then there are those who were so insecure that they projected it onto him for being able to be open, honest and vulnerable about his feelings. Sad, insecure people.

I personally don't like the military because there's a lot of men and women who have kids and a lot of family at home and they leave to fight some war in a middle-eastern shit hole and there's a chance they'll die far from home or come back so different that their family won't even recognise them. In my eyes a real man stays home and protects his family where they live. Getting shot or blown up or even worse... becoming a prisoner of war in a foreign land while your loved ones anxiously wonder if they'll see you again is fucked up! I'd much rather work closer to home and be a cop or something. At least the risk would be significantly lower and you can actually help people in your own community more than a solider would thousands of miles away.

@@Ithurtssobad thats absolutely true (as far as i can judge ofc) but in reality there are no people fit for war. Sending a husband might destroy their family but sending someone without family to war is equally destructive. Often after theyve experienced conflict they will stay in the military until worse happens because they get the feeling they fit in better there or maybe nobody is waiting for them at home. If they get home tho there is a even higher chance of them getting ptsd because they lack people whom they see every day or just somebody to talk to. In the most cases where ex soldiers commited suicide it was the people without loved ones or a family to return to because nobody realizes what is happening until its too late. As long as people arent fighting for their own good they cant endure the guilt, at least thats what i think by now.
I'm a 55 year old disabled United States Marine and I cried watching your video. I'm not ashamed to admit that and I find these trolls despicable and contemptible.

I'm 54 and did the same.... I've seen and done things in my life many have not. I'm an aussie veteran but I've also worked in the Coroners Office and have seen some horrific things I don't wish upon anyone. I was also a bodybuilder so was a big lad in my younger years but since being discharged (October 2020) for medical reasons I've suffered for years with PTSD (something I didn't even realise I had until I sought help) so totally understand where Craig is coming from but in my case stopped training and now unfortunately look like a different person. I too am an emotional guy so I get it and understand what he is going through. Before I joined the military I was top of my game in terms of fitness (I was an elite athlete) having being top 3 in my bodybuilding class, I also did track (velodrome) racing and actually still hold a speed record where I live. I was also about to go and compete at the World Track Championships in London but chose to join the army. I don't regret my choices in life as I did what many others only dreamed or dream about but it finally took it's toll on me too.... Thank you Craig for your service, compassion and for being the man you are. And to you too Michael, thank you for your service. The U.S. took the brunt in the middle east and always seem to take the brunt in every war they've been involved with and always to help other countries. Semper fi brother. My Corps motto was/is "Certa Cito" and the unit I was based with was "Ever Vigilant"...

Last days had been stressful. I’m still in the service. Desk job.
20 years in the field have taken their toll. Bosnia, Iraq and four tours in Afghanistan. I used to be a JTAC and when shit hit the fan it became my job to clear up the mess. I broke down some ten years ago. Never wanted to be diagnosed with ptsd. Got all the help I needed. But it’s still hard. Every year at certain dates and whenever you get the how many kills question…I totally relate to your story and sometimes need to know there are others out there who publicly open up. We need more stories like this.

lost it as soon as betsie came into shot, and folk wonder why people trust dogs over people.
My dad had a tiny little Yorkie, she lived to be 18 years old! Like Betsie, she was also blind and deaf when she got to a certain age, I think 16.5 years old. My dad even tried to get her eye surgery but the day of the surgery they did one last eye test and found it was too late. I think he still feels guilt about not catching it sooner. Dogs are truly man's best friend.
Dear Craig, as a former soldier, veteran and aid worker of veterans in the Dutch army, I recognize your battle. I see your power. And I am impressed by your honest openness. Many who suffer from PTSD feel alone in this world and lonely in their struggle. I will distribute your interviews to Dutch warriors. Because what you do is so brave and honest. As a dog person myself I tear up at the Betsy part. We don't deserve dogs and they deserve to live longer! Take care Craig, you're a good man.
I never ever comment on videos but I love this man. He's so much stronger mentally than he is physically to be able to come here and share. I wish him lots of love, laughter and peace as he continues to live his life.
"If I committed suicide, somebody's got to find me. To find me, I've infected somebody" Man, those words struck a real chord in me. It's something that's stopped me from killing myself, and to know that another person has the same train of thought means a lot.

I think about that a lot too and the effect it will have on the people who love me, can't do that to them...

People need to get away from the narrative that PTSD is a purely combat related issue.
You can get PTSD from almost anything. It’s in the name ‘Traumatic Stress’. You don’t get to decide what your body finds traumatic.
Women can suffer from PTSD from difficult child births, would you tell them not to do it if they couldn’t handle it? No. Because how could they have possibly known what was going to happen.
If someone was in a car accident, and suffered from mental health issues due to the incident, would you say to them “Don’t get into a car crash if you can’t handle it. Pussy.”? No. No you wouldn’t.
Some people can handle stress a lot better than others, but just because it finally got to them, does not make them weak. It does not make them a pussy. It makes them human.

100% agree. Not putting myself anywhere close to soldiers or anything you mentioned, but i was involved in an armed robbery at my old job. Guy only had a knife, but he scared the shit out of me by jumping over a wall and landing right in front of me. We had a quick tussle while i yelled at the 2 cashiers to book it, before i did myself. And while i didnt think it was that bad, for about 6 months after i was extremely susceptible to sudden noises and quick moments. I was jumping at people moving theirs hands just outside of my vision, people saying "hi" behind me when i didnt know they were there, things like that. I was never like that, and it wasnt until I was explaining this to someone who went through a similar thing, that they said it was probably PTSD. Im not 100% sure if it actually was, but it would explain why i suddenly so jumpy at small things. Going back to what was said in the original comment, i felt mostly fine about the event, no one got hurt, and everyone was calling me a hero (im not) for taking the guy on helping get the 2 female cashiers get out. I even went back to work the very next night, and even though I was a little freaked, it was never a major issue for me and i just got on with things. But maybe because being scarred was linked to an event that could be called traumatic, it just made my brain be super aware of any sudden noises or movements, even though i felt like i was over it. It mostly fixed itself after about half a year, but i still get scarred sometimes by smaller things, and wonder if its something left over from that event.
@@strazburg Obviously I’m not here to diagnose you with anything, but you’re absolutely right. What you went through was traumatic. And without realising, it probably did have an effect on you. Sometimes these symptoms for people are straight away. Sometimes it takes a while to kick in.
Sometimes it’s only temporary, sometimes it’s permanent.
That same thing could have happened to someone else, and not bothered them at all. Other people, could have needed years of therapy to get over it.
Whatever it is that happened, and however it effects you, is all totally valid.
Trauma isn’t the same for everyone.

Fully I was in a mad car crash two years ago and lucky for me I’m fine and didn’t have any mental health issue from it but for about 8 months after very little bump in the road (there are a lot by the way you think the road is flat but it’s not I could feel everything) I would get a flashback to the car crash wasn’t very nice but it doesn’t happen now but sometimes if it’s a proper big one that I’m not expecting like a pothole I will get it
@@slightcurve98 car crashes are a strange one, my cousin almost died in a car crash, fortunately he survived. His friend who was driving in the car along side him. Unfortunately died. They were on a call together saying goodbye to each other, until my cousin realises the 2 lanes merge into 1. So he slams on the brakes and as his friend tries to overtake infront of him. He swerves out of control down the hill to side of the road. Because they were on a call, my cousin heard everything and then a sudden silence. I don’t think my cousin like a lot of people have PTSD from car crashes as depending on the severity most people just get out and walk away. But from having a friend as close as they were ripped away right infront of him, thats where his PTSD I believe, is from.
Dont think for a second though that Im saying people dont get PTSD from car crashes because they do, I just don’t think its as common.
this is what being a "man" truly means. opening yourself up to literally the whole world about your own personal problems and being a beacon of light for those who are fighting their own demons.

So much respect for this amazing guy.. my dad was a Sniper in the Royal Marines and he's struggled for most of my childhood with anger and suicidal thoughts, he took his anger and put it in to saving lives and is one of the top paramedics I've ever known.. Hey up to Betsy 🥰

A dog that you've had for over a decade, and a dog thats pulled you back into the living from the point of having a gun in your mouth with your finger on the trigger, is quite literally irreplaceable. I'm glad he has his wife, I'm hoping that she is something he can hold on to. He's faced death many times before and come out -- I'm sure deep down he knows that at some point it will end. I takes a stronger man to realize he isn't invincible then face and overcome his demons. The tears I shed for Craig are for the pain he faced and is still overcoming.
To Craig: I haven't experienced what you have experienced, I haven't endured the hardships you did and didn't deal with the fallout of those hardships. My experience is different, my problems are quite different. But, as someone who has dealt with suicidal thoughts in the past, I am so grateful that I happened upon your videos. It really helps. If you are reading this, maybe you don't and that's alright, thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing your experience. It makes an impact.. You talking about your gun and how you got rid of it, and how you are considerate about those that'll find you reminds me of me and my knife.. Thank you Craig, for sharing that. We have to stay strong for ourselves and for those who love us. Stay strong.
When he talks about how he'd feel if someone found him after he'd commited suicide, and what stops him from going over the edge: "If they found me I'd infect them with my problem."

Thank you, Craig for opening up and telling the world about the horror of PTSD. My brother committed suicide two years ago, he too suffered both PTSD and a landmine head injury in an African bush war over 40 years ago.....he bottled his PTSD and lived in denial, but his anger made him unable to keep down a job....he ran out of road so many years later. I live each day in constant turmoil as I question why I did not do more to help him. What you are doing now goes beyond brave and is the true mark of a man. Keep sharing, stay level you help so many of us who live in a dangerous bubble of denial. Your purpose on this earth has probably only just started with your courageous admission first to yourself and then to those of us who need your guidance. Thank you.

It’s good to see Craig, I served with him and I always enjoyed his company on operations and socially. There is also another side to the man. He has a “great” sense of humour and fun for life. If ever there is a bloke to have with you in a scrap or hard times I’d have him.every time.

This guy fought on the front line, battling physically and mentally with himself for a long time and even now he’s still struggling. It’s sad that some people can’t even spare him the unnecessary bullshit after all that he’s been through. Served in the military. Own a shit load of guns. I'm prepared to do what has to be done to defend my life and way of life... But you'll never hear me speak ill of this man. There's nothing funny or glamorous about killing people.
Weirdly couldn't stop smiling at times watching this. He's gone through so much and still is, but he's doing so well all things considered. Pushing through and being able to admit, that it's not a piece of cake and even going a step further and raise awareness. So inspiring. What a lad! Hope he, his wife and his dog are doing well.
Had the same issues when my dad passed, watching him on the field at 16, helpless. felt like I couldn't talk about it... like I was going to ruin peoples days, or upset the mood of a room. So I found ways to talk where I knew it was safe.. but I dwelled so long it got a little too much. Take care man, and give the pooch a snuggle from all of us.
This man shared his story to the world. Most Veterans like myself with PTSD and physical injuries, still cant talk about our own journeys with war to family members. He is an inspiration to start the healing processes.

I had an old husky/rotti who was with me through the worst times of my life. When I thought about ending it all she sat in front of me. I grabbed handfuls of her fur and bawled. This dog was the biggest jerk, but damn did she know me. I could hide how bad it was from anyone else. The dog always knew. The day she died I promised her I would look after my mental health. I have her paw print over my heart as a constant reminder. It's ok to cry, men need to know it's ok to show emotions.

Amen! We Yanks love our British cousins (even if they make fun of us), and they are the bravest of soldiers. My grandfather was a Brit, and I'm proud as hell of that.
I have PTSD from childhood trauma's repeated rapes, violence, drug and alcohol abuses before I was even 12yo. Anyway, I am 54 now. And I still have night terrors, and cry for no reasons sometimes. Stay strong Craig, it won't go away, but it does go into the background so eventually you will be like myself, and have more good days than you have bad days. If you didn't already have a special lady in your life, I would scoop you up in a heartbeat! Love you big guy!!
Right there with you maiden, I’m 31 now went through three years of sexual and physical abuse at birding school, tried everything, drugs, cat, counselling. Nothing took the nightmares away. But at least I can function now

@@guts6560 it actually took me into my late twenties. And it took me to forgive myself and to give myself permission to just not remember those things. And that’s how I got through those scary years. Most of my childhood memories are gone. Good and bad. Mostly Cuzz the good ones got tangled up with the bad ones.
I also avoid triggers. Like Christmas and my birthday. All the holidays really. Are triggers for me. So I just chose to not celebrate them. Instead. I give gifts wrapped in love whenever I want. And my family knows not to expect more from me on that front
I’ve had night terrors for years. People have tried to break into my house to “save” me because they thought someone was killing me

I appreciate you speaking out, it takes a lot of courage to do what you have done and are still doing. Mental health is so important, but there are still the insecure people that obviously have severe issues and hide behind mean comments like the trolls you experienced after doing your first video. I have worked in mental health and suffered from depression a great deal of my life. You are anything other than what that troll called you, because of the sacrifice you made even the ungrateful people have their freedom including the ability to make cowardess comments on line. Until that person walks in your shoes they have no business judging. Thank you for all you have done and I wish you and your Family nothing but the best.

I found a 24 year old suicide during my rounds of a secure water installation, since that day he has never left me, I grieved for his young family, got angry about his memorial, and wished he could have gotten over his own anguish ... I didn't know him I tried to save him I know him now... thank you for your words Craig, look to the love in the dark

You don’t have to apologize for making us upset or cry over your story. It brought me to tears only because I see it happening in my life. I see soldiers attempt/commit suicide almost once a week while working on base. It’s sad that the military doesn’t care for its soldiers. But the vets and the active duty cares for you guys.
