  • This is a video on how to make a stencil using a program and some free hand work as well. You can get great results, and with some practice be making the coolest stencils out there. This is part one in a three part series. If you want to learn how to cut the stencil properly, go to the next vid. Good luck

Absolutely. I don't usually add text through GIMP but if you want to use the same program. In the toolbox I'm pretty sure there is a TEXT tool. if that doesn't work, you can print out the text in word and then add it as the last step when cutting the stencil out.

thanx so much for making this video, before I would create stencils by drawing it over by hand. this is going to save me huge amount of time on my project. again thank you its definitely a dream come true to be able to save so much time! :D

Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us. I was proficient with GIMP a few years ago, then life happened so I fell off for a while. Im getting back into a more positive place in my life though my artwork and family. This video was very helpful after sitting through many jabbering, unhelpful, curse filled postings.
I am by no means a prude being in the Military I spew my share of trash lol. Either way Thanks again for the simple INFORMATIVE video.

Ahh Finally. I couldn't figure out how to get a stencil that was one layer and had a fair bit of detail. I always ended up with like 3 or 4 layers to my stencils and they looked like crap. Thanks. xD

I did that by hand. But if u want to do it in the computer. Add a "layer" and then put the other piece in and make them transparent.

It's the selection type that you have. If you double click on the lasso icon, i think it brings up a window with selection options. maybe thats where u fix it. its just a settings thing

Probably not. I have not re-lassoed it and have a new problem! I have cut out the excess like you did with the final cut but I got a little triangle that wasn't cut out. I then separability cut out the triangle. Now when I go to colorize it the actual picture is not affected - it just affects the last little triangle that OI did. Arrgghh!!!

Hi. I have a question. I chose a photo and lassoed it, as you said. I colorized it and changed the contrast and brightness to suit. I then had to go out so I saved it. Now I've returned I would like to adjust the contrast - but it comes out stage - not like before - and the background doesn't stay white. Additionally, can I transfer the lasso shape to a new photo? I want to try this on the same photo but edit it for contracts first? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey! I can probably get a video up for you. This is mainly for single layer, black and white, but it can be applied to multi layer. To do this, save the final image, then crop/cut out each seperate part, that will be diff color, and save it as a separate image. I can make a video, and probably will really soon!

Absolutely the lion? I put it up to spread it. The lion photo I turned into a stencil is a google image, and other people have stenciled it and gotten stencils close to mine. So I could either give you the google image to try and see your results or you can just copy my finished product.
