- This is a video on how to make a stencil using a program and some free hand work as well. You can get great results, and with some practice be making the coolest stencils out there. This is part one in a three part series. If you want to learn how to cut the stencil properly, go to the next vid. Good luck
Absolutely. I don't usually add text through GIMP but if you want to use the same program. In the toolbox I'm pretty sure there is a TEXT tool. if that doesn't work, you can print out the text in word and then add it as the last step when cutting the stencil out.
thanx so much for making this video, before I would create stencils by drawing it over by hand. this is going to save me huge amount of time on my project. again thank you its definitely a dream come true to be able to save so much time! :D
Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us. I was proficient with GIMP a few years ago, then life happened so I fell off for a while. Im getting back into a more positive place in my life though my artwork and family. This video was very helpful after sitting through many jabbering, unhelpful, curse filled postings.
I am by no means a prude being in the Military I spew my share of trash lol. Either way Thanks again for the simple INFORMATIVE video.
Ahh Finally. I couldn't figure out how to get a stencil that was one layer and had a fair bit of detail. I always ended up with like 3 or 4 layers to my stencils and they looked like crap. Thanks. xD
Niiiice!! i'll try it with CorelDraw later, thanks for sharing!
Fixed it. Pressed 'select-none' like you said. Cheers.
By the way 'threshold' is really great -
Rad! Thanks for all the help!
Great video, man. Thanks for the info on gimp.
Thanks for this man. I'm hoping to get this skill down before september which is well before my moms birthday on December, I'm planning to make stencil art of one of her childhood photos. I'll probably have to learn multilayering as well. Thanks for the tutorials.
I did that by hand. But if u want to do it in the computer. Add a "layer" and then put the other piece in and make them transparent.
Very good work well done)))
It's the selection type that you have. If you double click on the lasso icon, i think it brings up a window with selection options. maybe thats where u fix it. its just a settings thing
Totally helped make my graffiti look epic!! Thank you! :D
Awesome! thank you!
Gimp looks quite good, but what unfree software would you say is better?
Nice video!
hey thanks man really helped i have just one question though...How do you add other pictures into that stencil like the crown above the lions head?
I'm going to try this out with some digital art hope it works.
Hey! Yeah I have a video that shows how to cut it and prepare it for the wall "how to cut a stencil" I think. I haven't made an applying one, but I can shoot you a message for now on how to get a clean spray on the wall. I should probably get a how to put a stencil up one
Nice video man.
Thanks dude this is awesome :)
Thanks for sharing I will try this for my own stencil making.
Thank you soooo much! I never thought it was so easy to do! :D
This video totally helped me make my graffiti look epic!! Thank you! >.< :D :D
stencils aren't Graffiti.
Waffle Joe Well duh... Lol. I was creating stencils FOR my graffiti.
+Waffle Joe how aren't they
Thanks it help me stencil my graffiti
Thankssss great tutorial!
not Gimp has a learning curve and can be annoying to get used to but then its fun and easy.
Probably not. I have not re-lassoed it and have a new problem! I have cut out the excess like you did with the final cut but I got a little triangle that wasn't cut out. I then separability cut out the triangle. Now when I go to colorize it the actual picture is not affected - it just affects the last little triangle that OI did. Arrgghh!!!
No problem :) thanks for watching
what program do you have to record what you are doing on your laptop iv been looking for one. thanks in advance.
Very helpful
u just gotta practice a lot, try to put the bridges wear it may seem natural for it to cut away.
not sure, it might be a mac only program, but last time I checked it should work for both, just make sure to download the windows version. There should be a .exe at the end of the file NOT .dmg
Hi. I have a question. I chose a photo and lassoed it, as you said. I colorized it and changed the contrast and brightness to suit. I then had to go out so I saved it. Now I've returned I would like to adjust the contrast - but it comes out stage - not like before - and the background doesn't stay white. Additionally, can I transfer the lasso shape to a new photo? I want to try this on the same photo but edit it for contracts first? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I use photoshop CS6 and CorelDRAW as well. The point of this video was to teach and for starting up. Btw changing the saturation was just the method I used....what do you think those filters are doing.....changing those options for you.
Did you save it after already turning it into the stencil form (black and white)?
Thank you soooooo much man. Do you think I could use this to paint a cool picture on my wall? By the way how old are you?
tnx for such guide!
Its a mix really. A lot of times ill just use this program to get a rough for the stencil and then ill make changes while im cutting. Bridges and clean up can be done on the computer tho. Check out the vid on cleaning up stencils that I have
Cool ;)
i want to get really good at cartoon stencils but my bridges make the stencil look bad any tips i am not an artist i just do this for my own amusement
Thank you so much!
Thanks Chuck Norris, I believe you are the man though.
A lot of times Ill add those seperately like after I print the image. In this case I made a lot of the lion by hand. :-\ you can do it by just using the lasso and fill tool. Go to my cleaning up a stencil vid, and use that technique to make parts.
Thanks. Soooo much. ♥
Hey DreamTrueProductions, how would you cut that out and spray paint it?
Thanks man
Hey! I can probably get a video up for you. This is mainly for single layer, black and white, but it can be applied to multi layer. To do this, save the final image, then crop/cut out each seperate part, that will be diff color, and save it as a separate image. I can make a video, and probably will really soon!
Hi DreamTrueProductions, wondering if I could hire you to make a stencil for me? I'd like something quite large so I can make a nice art piece
but if you if I have to create a stencil of a singer and then apply on the shirt and paint with spray cans ... how can I? PLEASE
thanks man for the tutorial
What type of stencil paper do u use cuz I use some crappy project paper and it's pain in the ass to cut and I want something easier and more professional look and to last
Plz comment back
hey:) I´m from germany. so don´t be scared of my english..
How does ist work with multilayer stencils?
Do you have more videos?

Is there a good tool in gimp to create the bridges?
Wut software did u do that with??????
can you show us how to put words on the stencils!?
What part of the stencil do you cut? Shit looks pretty difficult!
Thanks! that means a lot. I'm gonna be making more stencil related videos, but also other how-tos, so hit me up if you wanna see something.
Thank you!
No Problem :)
Absolutely the lion? I put it up to spread it. The lion photo I turned into a stencil is a google image, and other people have stenciled it and gotten stencils close to mine. So I could either give you the google image to try and see your results or you can just copy my finished product.
Whats the tool to get rid of the Background?
you cut the black out. then spray it and u get the contrast image
Thank you.
possibly! how would this all work out, what do you need exactly, time frame etc etc
np thanks for the comment :)
dude when i use the lasso selection tool i have to hold the left click so i can use it but in your video all you do is keep clicking why doesnt mine do that? :'(
He's got virtual dj ;)

Whats the best type of material to print mine out on .
Hey man, i think i already know the answer but could i use this stencil?

Where can you get the stencil sheet you were using in your video?
You can get it most art/craft stores. I've had good luck with hobby lobby
+Megan Haley Happy 420!
PUT EM IN HUSH MODE!
so basically you have to cut out the black right ? but what if you get white pieces that are detached ? is that what you were talking about bridges ? ... I wanted to do the Zelda links shield stencil, I found it on the net , but I have no idea how to not get bridges on this one lol any ideas ?
On a line that outlines or anything u can split that line and just have little ones making it up
+juliano3101 try multiple stencils. tones of tuts for that on here.
shop.hobbylobby com/products/wax-o-9-x-12-stencil-paper-427013/
Put a dot between hobbylobby and com. Understand? Its called waxo Stencil Paper if that doesnt work for you. Its a wax paper that is thick but very easy to cut. They changed it a lil from what I used to use but its about the same I think. Don't forget adhesive. I'd suggest looking at my 2 other videos on stencils to get the best results.
why not use photoshop?
oh well alright!!! its all good :D
Personal Hobby and rep lol :p also cause its fun
' ... it comes out 'strange', I mean
Is the black where u cut it out
