I was born in Cumberland in 1947 and we moved to Frederick in 1952. This does bring sadness to those of us that remember the glory days of B&O and Western Maryland. My Grandfather was a Conductor for B&O from 1913 to 1958.
It was great to see this again! I can remember all of that very vividly. The 0-6-0 steam was a New York central. It should now be at the nyc museum in Indiana. The turntable ended up in Ohio at the age of steam complex. The cabooses are privately owned. Csx stil uses small parts of the facility for car storage from time to time. It was a shame that it was demolished when it was under on going negotiations to turn it into a museum complex
i was there in summer, 1977. the only loco in the house was one of the BL2s. the other BL2 was working around the caboose track. no other locos around, very little activity.
After everything this railroad and the employees accomplished and the years it took, it seems such ashamed to see what has become of it all. To me, it’s like telling a group of faithful and loyal employee’s, sorry we don’t need you anymore and I know that’s pretty much what happened but it wasn’t broken.
I wish this would be restored to its former glory, it could be like Port Coverington Baltimore, with WM, PRR, B&O & M&W steam. It's such a shame to be left in such a deprecated state, I mean it's in perfect condition by the looks of the video, That's the same a piece of hero wrote history is being left to rest away.
If they had been smart the day after it closed they would have told railfans "Sale, bring your trucks, trailers, tools and cash." Think what that "Keep the green lights burning" safety sign would be worth now? Looks like maybe it was set up to light one lamp for each accident free day. I wonder what the story with the red cabooses was? It was cool of the guy oiling them to not run you off.
Just FYI yes that locomotive is at the Whitewater valley railroad but that POS has never ran since it been there nor will it ever it needs steam chance to complete new boiler the fire box is destroyed in it

I would really like your input as to where things were. Majority of it is torn down but what I think is left is the concrete foundations and some of the pits. I suggest you contact the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum since they are located next to the old roundhouse and shop area and are in a building that was once a part of the complex. They should be able to provide you information. I was to this Museum in April 2018 but wasn't allowed to walk around on the former complex property due to CSX prohibitions.
@@gcganonymous3021 CSX, the single largest reason there is no intrastate passenger rail in the State of Georgia. Why we have to drive to work into Atlanta from around the state instead of taking a train like other larger metro areas, All those pesky scheduled runs would interfere with the freight lines...
The only things that are left are some concrete foundations, the CSX Yard and also an abandoned baggage car. Most of the poles, signals, buildings, and a lot of track is not there anymore.
The Western Maryland Railway was absorbed into the HUGE Chessie system ( merger of the B&O and C&O) the Western Maryland continued as a holding company throughout the mid 70s then in 1981 with the formation of CSX Transportation ( the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard Coastline/Family Lines System) they totally abandoned the Hagerstown shops and it just became a small run through yard for CSX Transportation!

One February night as we were leaving the roundhouse, a yard crew got off an engine and walked by us.Johnn Mitchell is letting the B and O take us overrr he fumed. Hah. This roundhouse deserves to be rebuild as a Railroad Museum.
The Roundhouse Museum in Hagerstown tried to make this the museum, it sadly never happened and I think they want to rebuild it someday

Very sad to see the site in such abandonment, looks like vandalism of the years to most of it. Would be awesome to see a lot of this restored!!

The car shops are gone but the yard is actually in full operation as a storage yard.
