How Exciting!! I don't have personal experience with autism, but I read the book and it made me sob. Brought me so much hope for all those who have suffered through it. I'm so happy for you and your son!!

Thank you Jenny & JB. I have a 26-year old nonverbal with Down syndrome And autism. It’s been a long haul, but i realized 20 years ago that he was a profound gift from God who taught me real love & goodness. And patience too. 👍❤️
It's heartbreaking that so many kids have been locked in and so frustrated, while unable to communicate what it feels like. Even people with speech and language, the frustration is there. Big hugs JB, Jamie, and Jenny! We've only just begun in creating the shift to non-invasive therapies that will allow these children to open up finally!
I bought the book Underestimated and I'm halfway through. Quick read. Doesn't disappoint! 👍
I read the book in a day as I was so gripped. It's incredible and so sad that this method is being denigrated by "the experts".
My son , George , is typing too. He’s 14 and doing so great. These children are amazing and highly intellectual! No more life skills. So archaic!

My son chris is 20 non speaking, he really really really reminds me of Jamie. I know he's smart, I just feel like he can't access it. I have always known it. So I try to not baby speak to him. And im always telling people to not talk to him like he doesn't understand because we don't know how much he understands. I will definitely buy this book.

💖 In fact, I got in trouble for telling a kid he was great- it was a behaviorally based program.
Amazing interview! My 18 yr old son has been using a letter board for about 7 years in various therapy setting sessions but we have not yet transferred the skill to open communication in the home. I am always blown away by the stories he writes in sessions, or his expressed views on various topics (when Trump was elected and he was asked what advice he might give him, he spelled out "behave" LOL!) I am inspired to get to work at home and building the transitional steps (I can't wait to read the book and learn more about the gross motor vs the fine motor - that is a big issue for his difficulty using his letter board) Thank you Jamie and JB!
I just ordered this book. My 5-yo grandson is in a full-time ABA program. We've seen so much growth in his desire to engage others and to communicate. He still has obvious stims but will now sit at a table to eat with us and will cooperate with me when helping to cook (something that we have learned he loves to do). We go to the trampoline park and he now looks to join other kids. He's currently using the TouchChat program on an iPad for communication. The use of an AAC device has greatly diminished his meltdowns. Communication is huge. He's a bright kid; I've always known it. I definitely want to help him move to communicating more independently (via letterboard or keyboard) and not have to rely on a vocabulary of preprogrammed pictures. I understand that Jamie felt ABA was awful but wonder if it's possible that early ABA might have helped bring him out of the typical "autistic isolation" enough to encourage him to desire to interact and learn. There is so much learning that must be done before a letterboard is practical. A child must learn to spell to use it. Is there something in place of ABA that the Handley family would recommend for children too young to spell to prepare them to learn the letterboard? Thank you JB and Jamie for sharing your story.
Oh my gosh, I'm only halfway through and am in tears, I love this!!! I'm not a parent but have felt that anyone who experiences Autusm is definitely spiritually awakened and gifted!

Does autism come from vaccinations? I have a 5 month and I am trying to debate if one or two vaccinations are okay?
@@dragonbulley not doctor but I do get my son his vaccination. He showed signs at birth with head shaking. But didn’t know what it was until 5 years later.

@@dragonbulley No it does not. That myth comes from a discredited faulty study by Andrew Wakefield. Get your kids vaccinated.

Definitely agree with the father about aba, been there done that. Felt like they were bullying my 5yr old. Like, you know he wants more bubbles stop making him cry. Smh A letter board to begin with makes perfect sense for me for building new neuro pathways, autistic kids love letters and you don't even have to charge it. Lol I Love the title of the book. Definitely buying one asap❤️
I finished the book last week, I read it in one day. I couldn't put it down. It was amazing! I love how Jamie insists on having his buddies tell their stories at the end too. How he advocated for the other kids to their parents and showed them how he does it on the letter board, truly touched my heart! Well done, love you guys❤️🥰❤️ Also, a sidenote - We have never been to any clinic either where the people actually even try to speak directly to our son but, that does sound nice. 😌

@@dragonbulley It almost always is, whether family realizes it or not. We were lied to, for instance. We were also lied to about the nature including metabolic health issues that one does not "grow out of."

@@dragonbulley I vaccinated. And my twins were both injured at 15 months and we were lied to. So we kept vaccinating. Now my son has been on dialysis for 8 years and was accused of being a drug addict when he absolutely wasn't. My grandbaby was vaccinated against my warnings. He's locked in even though he does have median verbal skills. It breaks my heart.

It can be like being trapped inside a body where you understand but it's like you're held down with a hand over your mouth. This is amazing and I'm so happy that families will be able to help their kids better with this perspective. These kids are not cognitively off. They just can't string sentences together why using their mouths. They are still able to string them together inside their heads tho. And these keyboard/stencil stuff is so simple yet is such a game changer

This is incredible. My autistic nephew could belatedly talk and read (through the 9th grade in homeschooling) then was further injured by being given an anti-psychotic, becoming non-verbal as a late teen (now over 40). The last thing he said to me before becoming non-verbal is "I feel like Joseph in prison, wondering when I am going to be let out."
😢😢😢. I don’t understand why the medical “professionals” and therapists make this life so much harder than it should be. My son was abused by 5 ABA therapists at once and hasn’t spoken a word since. That was 6 years ago.
People with Asperger's feel that way too, to a very different degree: the guy who created Asperger Experts said that he always felt like everyone else around him had a secret that they weren't going to tell him. He also said that he can't handle other people's emotions. That's developed from PTSD suffered that creates despondency because no one understands the pain of all kinds involved.
I've been following JB for a little while and actually he was my classmate in 7th Grade. I drive a short bus for a school and I have been lending this book out to numerous parents and teachers over the last few years. It has been insightful to wonder what is happening with these kids in their inner world.

I'm so glad you found the book!! I read it and sobbed, too, and I don't even have personal experience with autism. It brought me so much hope for all those who have (are are still) suffering through it. I'm currently working on completing a program to work with kids with autism, mainly because of this book. Good luck to your and your son! Now that you know what you know, you can never go back!

I have a 9 year old son with autism who doesn't speak. I read this book last year and started looking for an S2C practitioner. I recently found an organization and we are about to schedule his first session! I am very excited. Just want to thank JB for putting the book out because I had never heard of S2C until then.

Hi Jenny, I have the same story as you. I do believe my son became autistic due to vaccines. He developed symptoms after the shots literally two days later. Although, his seizures just started and he is 20 years old, same as your son. I have read your books. I do the best I can taking care of him. His story is pretty similar to Evan.

This is fascinating. We have 3 adult children. Our oldest had echolalia (repeats one phrase endlessly) from age 3 & on. He's good at verbal skills now, though he's still very autistic & (his infatuation) identifies military tanks accurately. He paces the floor as an adult. We used flashcards when he was young. Our middle child imitated his echolalia so we thought she was autistic when she was preschool age but she is not. She was just a good imitator of echolalia. This father is making huge breakthroughs that will help children struggling with sensory overload & verbal skills. Autism is sensory overload on a grand scale.
Wow, this was an amazing story. Love how much you care about the world and the children. I had no idea I have this slightly My fine motor shuts down when typing and skip words, sentencing, and paragraph. When handwriting I use words from other languages' time periods and cultures which mean the same as the missing information. Just blew my mind they are doing the same when they misspell words. I had a teacher who studied dead languages and translated my handwritten documents. She was amazed. It supports reincarnation information. She asks me how many languages I knew and I told her I have been told I barely know English. I was told I was ADD and Dyslexic but it is just an issue with my fine motor skill. I destroyed a computer keyboard thinking it was the device when typing I got a program that reads what I Type so I know when I am not functioning correctly. Wrise is its name but Apple integrated it into their latest OS after I requested it. Wow that is why I can not read a book my eyes water after about a paragraph and I am done.
Also when you learn this is because you are a starseed and your spirit is too strong for your human body which causes the damage along with the environmental contamination caused by chemicals etc. Wow I looked at myself as stupid did not understand my issues crazy that this has helped me.
I am proud of them both and all the people who had helped with Jamie's journey. He actually has a focus point, regardless of what is going on in his body to pay attention to listen and put thoughts together. Is the same thing going on with Autism, what is happening to people who had heart attack/stroke?
We need this in every school.

S2C is discredited quackery and not supported by evidence-based medicine. AHSA warns against its use because the autistic person is not performing the communication.

My granddaughter started S2C one year and two months ago. 2 days ago, She was asked, what do you enjoy doing? Her response was, I enjoy spelling. This was her first real breakthrough. Don’t listen to people that are saying this doesn’t work. I’ve witnessed it.

Jenny your books saved my son. I don't know where we would be if I hadn't found them. My son was severely autistic at 3 years old and at 8 they took his diagnosis away.
Really how was this possible? My son got recently diagnosed at 3 & were overwhelmed trying to find ways to help him.
Diet was huge and supplements.

Put him on Amitriptyline. It made me locked in . When I wasn't totally locked in, my motor skills such speech and moving were severely delayed. If I wanted to say a thought I had, it took me about 30 to 40 seconds to get it out. I also stuttered sometimes. So maybe he would have the reverse action.

I could prove if this was true very easily. Make it so that the person asking the questions can not be heard at all in any possible way by the facilitator. If that can be done then I will accept that as evidence. If it can not be done then it is very suspect.

I don’t have a child impacted by autism, but I came across this video after I’d saved the book just due to my interest. But I’m left with questions: what method of communication is generally taught for non-speakers if this is controversial?
And Jamie obviously knows how to spell. Is this common or is he having to learn to spell to learn to do the boards?
I’d like to know more as this seems so important and impactful, I’m confused why it’d be considered “bad”. Is something similar being used that most schools deem better researched? There must be something being done for communication.?

Did Jamie ever receive speech therapy services? Have sessions ever been done with him and a speech therapist using S2C? Were communication devices such as LAMP Words For Life on an iPad or a Tobii Dynavox ever considered or recommended for Jamie before S2C?

I feel like he expressed his opinion of ABA not what ABA actually is
ABA has helped so many kids , to give people wrong information like that is so unfortunate
We help these kids learn skills that will help them LEARN and replace behaviors that are not helpful to their learning , that is all

@@csil9916 well I just heard from a family today at my job how much ABA has changed their lives for the better so sounds like a difference in opinion and experience.
@@csil9916 this type of programming may help with speech but how do you help a child who is smearing poop on their walls at night and hitting them selves to the point of bruising. Please inform me ? The children I work with have certain behaviors that are very much detrimental to their development. ABA is a life saver for many
I have used the Son Rise program. It has changed everything for my son. Look at some testimonials on CZcams . I have never seen anyone not make progress . What is also amazing that once the program is done for these kids , they have amazing progress in other areas as well . It a fantastic program , works on the social aspect , which is really what life is all about
My son became very robotic from ABA. He only did stuff when he was told . You rarely see anyone becoming normal from ABA, because it’s all about the reward . It’s not about them doing it for themselves, it’s because you want to see them do “stuff”. They need to be motivated to do things for themselves to get their needs met . Not because they are getting a reward

My sons school will not even allow my son to use his TD-SNAP. The only way he can communicate with words. They told me I can do that on my own time. I don’t even want to go to the next iep meeting. I have not missed one in 12 years but I’m just exhausted of fighting for every little thing

Dad says the keyboard is more difficult to use than the letter board because fine motor skills are needed. You could get around this problem by creating a keyboard with very large keys (or very large touch screen). Maybe I am just not understanding the transition from letter board to keyboard.
