  • Resident Evil 4 is a few short weeks away and to rev up anticipation Capcom have released a demo. But after playing it, I've come away from the experience full of equal parts anticipation and trepidation.
Here's hoping the finished game learns from the mistakes of the past and provides an experience which balances what makes Resident Evil...Resident Evil
This video is my thoughts following replaying the chainsaw demo 4+ times but i'd love to hear from you. Did the demo get you more excited or did it leave you with more questions than answers?
I try to respond to everyone so let me know in the comments section and i'll look forward to discussing it with you
If you enjoyed the video put a like on it and subscribe to the channel for more Resident Evil content.
Up next on the channel is a review of Scars Above before I tackle Dead Space Remake. I'll look forward to seeing you back here soon.

I completely disagree. The village section was scary just in a overwhelming, anxiety inducing sort of way. I believe the demo proved that they can execute slow paced dread inducing horror and action heavy anxiety inducing horror in the same game.
I honestly think people just played the demo so much they became desensitized to the scenario from repetition.

So I get and fully understand where you're coming from... but looking at this as both a remake of RE4, and a sequel to RE2 Remake, they've definitely made subtle tweaks to at least balance the game slightly more towards the horror end of the spectrum than the original. I've played both games countless times, and here's my takeaways of the RE4 demo:
First off, ammo is definitely more scarce than the original. Not by a massive margin, but it definitely isn't just handing it to you like the original did (I had over 50 rounds in the original by the time I arrived at the village). Additionally, the knife breaking if overused maintains the ability to break away from enemies that was in both the RE1 and 2 remakes, but it also means that you cannot abuse the knife like you did in the original. That means if you get reckless with your resources, you are screwed. The enemies are also much more aggressive to compensate - in the original they just slowly walked towards you while you could headshot them, but in this one they swarm you relentlessly, so if you try the same strategy here, you're dead.
So yes, the game definitely is more on the action heavy side than RE2 Remake was, but given the trajectory of the original, I feel like these changes, coupled with the spookier atmosphere, at least make it slightly more in line with the remake of RE2.

Resource limitations is what I loved about RE2MAKE.
Playing RE4 (2005), I didn't really notice that limitation and understandably so, you fight a LOT of ganados. I think they might reduce the number of ganados that might attack you due to how much faster they are now, which can really push you into a corner and force you to assess how you're going to approach each fight.

I'm a fan of the OG style as well. I had fun with the demo, but I agree with you - I was interested when they said this was going to be more horror themed. While it definitely is, I hope they stick heavily to it and focus on resource limitation. It's a big reason that while the OG was fun, I put it behind REMake, 2Make, OG 2 and 3. I'm all about the exploration/survival horror experience over the action horror experience.

I understand this viewpoint. But I grew up with RE4 and had sooo much fun with it. It was my first horror game and it did scare me a lot, especially in the castle. But mostly it was combat tension. I just really love the "action hero in an unsettling environment" thing it has going. Leon was just so damn cool and funny. "Your right hand comes off?"
I did play RE3, Revelations, Revelations 2, 6, 5, 7, and 8 afterwards. And I prefer the action approach. The Simmons fight in 6 was just too good. RE7 was very good with the horror aspects in general though.

I'm a combination of excited, intrigued, and sceptical about the RE4 Remake. I'm excited to see what changes Capcom make to the story, gameplay, and game design as we progress through the different beloved areas, but I'm also worried that they might end up trying to change too much, or end up sticking too close to the original. Changing too much would anger fans as the RE3 Remake did and making it feel like an entirely new game (in a negative way), and sticking too close would end up making it feel like a remaster, which we've gotten several times since it's original release (the HD versions on PS3/360, PS/Xbox One, and PC).
I love that Capcom seem to be taking a more horror-orientated approach to Resi 4 with the Remake (from the trailers, not necessarily the chainsaw demo), but I hope that we get more fearful and terrifying areas than just atmospheric horror, or just areas where the player has to be stealthy. There are many areas in the original that I think Capcom could change to make much more terrifying, like the first garrador fight, the U3 and Verdugo boss fights, and, as you mentioned, the sewers and the garden area with all the dogs. I really hope they get the right balance of action and horror if they go down the route of including both within the game, as they seem to be doing, since having both genres could be either very enhancing, or detrimental to the title, depending on the balance and the way they implement horror.
I myself am a lover of Resident Evil 4, but I also really enjoy the previous games, and RE7, that were focused on resource management, and feel more like survival horror. The original RE4 is my favourite in the series, but I am not a massive fan of any of the other action-orientated ones, like ORC, 5, or 6. They are all decent games, but just not good RE games. Resident Evil 8 was a blend of the old with the new, horror and action, but as good as RE8 was (another of my favourites, in fact), I think it leaned too much towards the OTT action in spots. I adore the parts of Village that are terrifying, like the doll house, and think they were spot on, but the action parts still feel too OTT for a Resident Evil game, so hopefully Capcom learn from that and are able to get a better balance between the two in the RE4 Remake. I did notice, in the demo, that certain moves, like kicking enemies and jumping out windows, were made slightly less heroric and "action hero" than the original due to the camera. The camera staying behind Leon rather giving him a cinematic view while kicking an enemy or jumping out of a window does make it feel more believable, and makes it feel less.....superficial? and over the top, and just that change, for me personally, was a very clever way to keep the iconic actions, but mix them with the new style and direction the new Remake is going in. It still has the sense of an action game, but it feels more "quick, i'll jump in here to get around the enemy" or more of a way to escape enemies, rather than trying to make Leon incredibly badass and unbelievable. Just the camera angles for those actions alone already make the characterisation of Leon, and how he has developed and changed since Raccoon City, more believable to me. Same goes with the cheesy one liners. The classic bingo line is there, but the voice acting and the changes to the phrasing of the dialogue also make Leon more believable, and relatable to the player, in that, for example, the Bingo line, Leon sounds more confused and curious in the Remake, rather than just..... "Eeeehhhhh" in the original release. Leon also being able to speak and understand Spanish adds a nice touch to that ability to believe what's going on as well. I never understood in the original why Leon never actually spoke the native language to the first ganado in the Cabin, despite being able to understand the language.
I absolutely loved the RE4 Remake demo, but I haven't yet got my hopes up for the full game. The demo looks very promising to me, but we are still dealing with Capcom after all! I'm equal parts worried as I am excited to play it when my copy arrives.

Appreciate the perspective - I'm a bigger fan of the old school Resi's, but have a lot of love for RE4 as well. Ultimately though, even if Capcom has made the graphics, lighting and atmosphere a bit spookier and more foreboding - I don't think there's any way they could've made 'every enemy/combat encounter terrifying' like you suggest, without completely changing the identity of the game. At the end of the day, I think they're trying to do the original justice in terms of approach and spirit while revitalizing it with modern additions.

It feels like going forward there’s going to be two styles that the series bounces between. There’s the games that use the classic formula, which we’ve seen with RE7, RE2R, and RE3R (although 3 was more action focused than the previous games, it still have the same general gameplay loop). Then there’s the RE4 style that we’ve seen with RE8 and RE4R. I’m convinced there’s going to be an attempted balance between those two styles moving forward. I can see RE9 being similar to RE7 in tone, and they follow it with a RE5R game. I can also see RE9 being more of Village, and we get a RE1R game following.

The focus on the horror, the tightly written story, and the overall atmosphere was perfect. I’d like to see more games like that, even if they’re spin-offs. Second, after playing the Resident Evil 4 remake demo, going right back to the original feels clunky, unfinished, and easy mode. (New game, professional difficulty)
I noticed in the demo that weapons have a perk list. It makes me wonder if they will have multiple upgrades after maxing out a weapon's stats. Like, the TMP, upgrade this weapons firepower greatly, then this weapon is now compatible with the laser attachment. Something like that.

I respectfully disagree, I haven't played the demo, but I would urge you to be very careful when asking for 'Reimaginings'.
RE3 Remake was a Reimagining and look how that game ended up, a cheap, shallow, lazy imitation of original source material. RE1 is considered by many (And me depending on what day it is) to be one of the greatest remakes ever made and one of the best games ever made in general. It was a faithful remake that improved on the original in more or less every way possible and the added extra content on top of that to supplement what was already there.
Every time I hear the word 'Reimagining' my eyes roll harder than Limp Bizkit in 2001.
Believe me I am no Capcom fanboy, I stopped paying for their new games after RE3 Remake and just haven't felt the same way about the franchise since, but I am very, very glad they are sticking closer to the OG4.
RE4 is one of the most successful and well known video games of all time, to stray away from what made the game as iconic as it is would be business malpractice.

I’m not gonna lie I wasn’t hoping for a full on Remake this is pretty faithful to the original in many ways. I was hoping they would take the story and ideas from RE4 and make it more of a survival horror game than an action game unlike the original. I thought it was going to be more similar to RE2 remake but with ganados instead of zombies. I was interested to see what Resident evil 4 would like look as more of a super creepy slower pace horror game than basically a remake that remains faithful to the originals action roots.

But the general idea is the same. Kill everything that moves… replenish your ammo with pickups dropped by dead enemies. Shoot in particular spots to allow for melee takedowns… there is so much here that is the same as OG RE4.
I was just hoping we’d get a more survival horror version of RE4 because i always thought it would be sick to see a more horrific version of RE4 as opposed to the action packed thing the game always had going for it.
I love RE4 for its gameplay but I was always more of an RE1 RE2 guy than an RE4 guy. 1 & 2 truly define the series for me…. 4 comes in third place.
So as somebody that always like 4 but loved 1 & 2 maybe you can now see why I was hoping they’d turn RE4 into something more in line with the series early survival horror roots.
They had no problem making big changes to RE3 so that’s why a part of me thought they could take RE4 in a different direction as well. There are things I really love about re4 but there was also a lot I didn’t like … always found the second half of RE4 to be pretty silly.

You got excited about the remake, yet you're disappointed that it's similar to the original, as if you're surprised about that. The community generally made it clear that they wanted the game to not stray far from the original.

I will die on the hill that RE6's gameplay system in isolation is a blast. RE6 Mercenaries is so good. It just needed more fine-tuning, IMO. The problem with RE6's gameplay during its campaign was the excess of forced scripted on-rail segments that prevented the gameplay from ever shining, or even explained properly through a proper tutorial. It's just one scripted action setpiece to another... They overstay their welcome after your first campaign, let alone the next three. It's always been trendy to hate on RE4 because "not 1-3", but let's be serious. RE4 is tight.
Not only is RE4 tight, but without it the entire series would be dead. Survival Horror titles have fought and screamed through the years, being practically forgotten by everyone but their fans for years. RE4 not only revitalized the series, but changed the face of third person games.
    In 2010, okay. Sure.
"Re4 ruined RE" was a radical opinion, but in 2023 I think it's just outdated logic. Them original games aren't even scary beyond being 11 and confused on the Mansion layout. By your second or third playthrough you're basically speedrunning the original games.
The difference is that in old school RE, the tension fades as soon as you have a grasp on the mechanics, but in a game like RE4 your execution is tested every single encounter. If you play the old RE4 on the highest difficulty, every bullet counts because you need crowd control or you're doomed. I don't think RE4 needs to drastically diverge from the formula because that game is largely a perfectly executed game.
Iron out some of the kinks in terms of pacing, encounter design, etc and we're all set.

To be honest, I never expected a full on reimagination, after all RE4 fanboys are worst fanbase in RE community. The weird things they are complaining are ridiculous. You could see them some of the other videos, some calls game ruined because Leon not makes cringy jokes or some people asks why that stupid QTE knife changed and called that legendary (seriously!). Maybe I'm the only guy hoped to see somehow hookman finds his way in the remake 😂.
Now for real talk. I never liked RE4 , they can't really work on that much on the game because of that ridiculous story. Leon was a super soldier in original and he is a super soldier again , story made him one man army. Unless they change the story complety (like the hookman version), they can't make him less than a one man army. But changing story cause uproar among the RE4 fanboys and they need their support. Just the rumor of the removing Krauser (the character really has no relevancy in the story) caused some rage. He was overpowered in original but tank controls pulled him back in og RE4. Let's be honest here, RE4 in never been a challenging game, there was no strategy, no puzzle, no choices it was a linear game. Controls, stupid QTEs and some bad escort missions gave trouble to players. Now the free control gave player much more freedom, that's why its gonna feel like more action heavy compared to original. Is it gonna be good o bad thin we will see it.
For me, I liked what I saw. I hated QTEs, I hated cringy dialogs, now it looks like they cut most of em. Now I expect more serious and better devoleped villians. Salazar looks more threatning (hope they made better boss fight and removed that stupid giant statue), Ashley looks more likable. Hope Saddler got better treatment, Krauser get more backstory, story kinda makes more sense.

Heck, i'd even go as far as mentioning that I wish RE 3.5 wasn't scrapped because it looked way more in tune with what came prior. Really dark, wasn't too over the top, and there was a sense of dread. And of course the survival aspect was there.
This demo was so jam-packed with an over abundance of resources that already lessens the thrill of the threat(s) lurking around every corner. I'll play the RE4 Remake, but I stand strongly on the fact that when it comes to the writing and survival aspect of this franchise onward, it just flat out sucks. I only consider RE5 the better game because it had better characters and a better villain involved. Otherwise, this whole franchise needs to be rebooted. *This a mild spoiler warning, so only look down if you want an answer to your question about the statue…*
I have been combing for leaked footage these past few days and did see something that resembles the original RE4’s giant Salazar statue. However, the statue appeared during the tower sequence with the spiral staircase and elevator, as merely another trap to get past.
Plus, it attacks Leon by periodically breathing fire like the original RE4’s dragon statues, rather than chasing after him. Unless that statue appears elsewhere, it seems that the RE4 Remake gives a nod to the original’s statue, but tones down its absurdity and has it swap roles with other traps/set-pieces.

This video went up pre playing the full game, I'll have a full review out next week if you want to see how I feel after playing it.

@@SSJdavey well I’m not going to watch a video of someone’s concerns for a remake of game they don’t even like. What could you possibly be worried about? Being one of the few people who don’t like a critically acclaimed game AGAIN? If you weren’t a fan, you have nothing to worry about.

I'm worried about how they'll balance the knife, i love it's inclusion here and how they've tied it to a meter I'm concerned on how they'll balance refills, that and the general atmosphere. Fun wise its off the charts

This channel is dedicated almost exclusively to survival horror content, might want to rethink throwing elitist nonsense around.
If you disagree that's totally fine, that's why the Internet is great we can have a conversation about our view points and find understanding. Is there anything your concerned with or are you certain they'll nail the remake?

The demo will be exactly the same as the whole game wtf do you mean?

      @SSJdavey  Před rokem +2

We don't have enough time in the demo to know for sure how rescources will be managed, we havnt seen any of the environments outside of the intro. So no we don't know for sure. We know how it controls and the mechanics but that's it (they are both positives btw)

Yeah no I can see if you want to play a more scary game. Go play outlast go play any other dead space game. But Resident Evil has always had a mix of gunplay mixed with horror

    • @SSJdavey
      @SSJdavey  Před rokem +1

Its not the gunplay per se that's the concern its more resource management when it comes to the knife that's my biggest question mark 👌
