I keep grocery, household and personal all separate. Easy to keep track of
That’s what I’m thinking 🥰
Totally agree about the cats. I know pets aren’t necessarily ‘frugal’ but to me they are worth every penny! I hope you can get them back soon ❤
❤️
It is good to see you again Nicola!!
Thank you 🥰
We have an "Entertainment" budget rather than just eating out. It can be used on eating out or a take away or aday out , or a coffee & cake etc. I think your right to have it otherwise you would resent not having it & end up using all your misc etc
Ooh yes, I could do that 🤔
I was just about to say the same thing. My entertainment budget includes everything you listed and also includes movie tickets, concert tickets and books.
Mine is labelled "extras", same idea. Thank you a lot for your content.
I'm reading Ultra Processed People right now and i think it's actually good to be eating Ultra Processed Food while you read about it as it makes you more aware. Im interested to see how we do eating less UPF and more whole foods in 2024. Also, like others have said, we don't have an eating out envelope, we have a family fun envelope. Just put money in when we can and then if we want to do anything as a family the money is there. Sometimes it is spent on eating out, but sometimes it pays for entry to an event, or tockets to go somewhere. Lovely to see you back xx
I want to read that book - is it good?
I used to cook dried beans every week and add a cup or more to almost every recipe(including spaghetti bowl) sometimes mashed to disguise it.Beans are incredibly filling, taste great and stretch meat.
Is there a special way to cook them if they’re dried?
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage I soak my beans overnight then cook them in a pressure cooker for 9 minutes. I can order organic dried beans for less than standard beans in a can. At the weekend I make up the number of cans I need for the week then freeze them in can sized portions in the freezer. Then I just have tro defrost them the night before I need them. I have saved money doing this and we are eating far better quality beans.
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage I soak them overnight and cook (boil on stovetop for up to 1 hour(or until they are soft) then I freeze them in 1 cup portions to use through the week. It’s really easy, replaces 1’4to1/2 of minced meat etc
Other people do it much quicker with pressure cookers etc but I’ve always done it the old fashioned way.Use a fairly bland bean at first eg butter beans or cannellini beans.Good luck with this because you can make 2 dishes eg spaghetti bog and chilli con carne out of 1 pound of minced meat.
My cat Olly has to have meds for a heart condition for the rest of his life, I spoke to my vet who prescribed a 6 month prescription that I then buy online, this has saved a massive amount of money from what would have cost me £600 for the 6 months in fact only costs £130 !!
Ooh I’ll ask about that - thanks!
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage you are very welcome and yes always worth asking it can save a lot !xxx
Great to see you back!(cash stuffing) Happy New Yea r x
Thank you ☺️ and to you!
I think I'd have just 1 envelope for toiletries and household and food.Everything you buy from the supermarket.
Just worried I wouldn’t be able to track how much I spend on what that way 😕
Nice to see you back. I hope that 2024 goes really well for you ❤.
Thank you ❤️
I’ve been using the cash envelope system for most of my categories. I don’t have a grocery one anymore because I order online for pick up which means I use my cc. I pay it as soon as I pick up and know the accurate total
Have you considered having a single category called Groceries which includes everything you buy at the supermarket - food, cleaners, toiletries and pet food. We do and it keeps it super simple. Also we have a category called Entertainment which covers more options like coffee, takeaways or a film etc). Good to see you back and New Year blessings to you and your family.
I just worry that I wouldn’t be able to track things properly if it’s all combined? 😕
For me it is a set dollar amount $200 New Zealand a week. There is just 2 adults in our house and a cat and dog. Some weeks it's $20 or $30 more and some less. I totaled our years spending this week and we were only $100 - $200 over . It works for us and has been liberating. We have no need to write down and categorise each item. I have a personal category called hair and body care of $500 For my infrequent haircuts and minimal makeup. We don't have cash envelopes. Our system is a lined book with a page for each category. Each page is has a line with the month named where I pencil in the amount I spent on an item/items which I total up at the end of the month. Then I rub out the pencil amounts and write in the month total with pen. Each page has the category written at the top with the weekly total allowance next to it and the yearly. So ...Groceries $200 pwk $10,400 pa. Maybe you could have a book alongside your cash envelopes? It helps keep detailed track and becomes a habit that takes minutes. I would be very happy to send some pics of mine but not sure how to. Let me know if you would like that.
It sounds like you’ve got a system that works well for you ☺️
Where did the medical, Nicola and birthdays folders go? And the Disney one?
Nicola, so do you use each envelope and pay separately in separate transactions for pet food, toiletries, food at the till in the supermarket?
My misc category includes things like postage, photo printing, bus and ferry fares, the occasional charity shop dvd or book, hair ties, stationary etc.
My entertainment (your eating out category) category includes eating out, coffee, movie tickets, concert tickets and sometimes a new book etc.
I used to have a seperate garden category but I rolled it into my home maintenance category. I also combined my previously seperate food and household categories. Trying to streamline it a bit so I'll see how it works in 2024.
We do something very similar and find it works too. Less categories.
I don’t know if I’m making it too complicated 😕
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage I think it's trial and error. I've been doing this type of budgeting for almost 30 years and I'm still tweaking it.😂

Great to see you back normal people would just get more credit cards, good for you 😊
Thank you ☺️
I struggled to hear what you were saying so sorry if you mentioned it but is your car due a service sometimes when they need a service they start drinking the fuel more.
I just have a food catagory all food household and toiletries come out of it
I didn’t know that about fuel, thank you for sharing that!
Just wondering why you need to keep specific track of items you buy at supermarket which seems to be putting you off having just one cash envelope called groceries ( petfood, toiletries, cleaners and food)? Not a criticism as I am genuinely interested.
I think it’s so i can track if I’m overspending in one category. If they’re all merged, how would I know? 😕
Oh ok. I can see why. I guess for us we mostly buy only if we need it ( like a new bottle of shampoo) or it's marked on a very good special and we may buy 2). If it is just one name category and you have your budget there's no need to worry about the item. I'm trying hard to convince you because I've been doing it for many years now and it works well.
