Coheed was a band I couldn't really get into for years....then one day it just clicked and I legit couldn't understand how anyone could not like what this band is doing. There is nobody like Coheed. Love'em.

Someone told me that the Coheed experience goes like this:
(First time a song plays)…man, this guy sucks…what the crap, his voice is too high.
(Listens again) wait a minute, he doesn’t suck, this is actually really good.
(Listens for a third time) “I am one among the fence!”

    @stephantom8237 Před 2 lety +1

I hadn't heard this song before or very much of newer Coheed stuff in fact. I liked it. It feels like a bigger, fuller sound, and yeah, an in-it-in-a-minute riffy and pretty accessible piece. I think I've heard that lyrically they've moved away from the fictional-universe of the singer's comic books in the past few years? I'm glad that he's not feeling beholden to what they had.
All that said, I really think that to know what Coheed is about and what gained them most of their fans and propelled them to success, you need to visit their stuff from the early 2000s. Especially the longer, more progressive tracks. It's basically emo (in a very early 00s way) prog rock with a little bit of metal. And it's so interesting and fun. You need to listen to the album "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" in its entirety, to be honest. It's their second album, and I still think it's near perfect. It is meant to be experienced as an album; it opens and closes with the same theme, played with different instruments. The title track was the first song of theirs I ever heard and it took a little bit to grow on me, but it got my attention and eventually became one of my favorite songs ever. It starts quiet with a solitary guitar and then by the end there's a roaring choir. The song is about an epicly important space battle, with crypticly suggested characters full of destiny and drama, and it feels like it. It's just wonderful.
    My list of essential Coheed:
    - "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth" [iconic, just described]
    - "Everything Evil" [from the first album. dark, epic -- try the version from "Guitar Center Sessions", I think it actually somehow surpasses the album recording]
    - "The Crowing" [very cool longer track from their second album; I think of it as the protagonist's "coming of age/accepting the quest" moment; neat key-signature changes]
    - "21:13" [bonus track from the second album; very proggy and meandering; reprises many melodies from previous tracks of theirs, including their first album, and somehow it works]
    - "Delirium Trigger" [from the first album; another kind of creepy one, very creative and cool with a powerfully plaintive refrain]
    - "Blood Red Summer" [second album; incredibly fun and boppy, but it BUILDS]
    - "The Light & The Glass" [epic ballad which closes the second album; starts like a lullaby and builds to amazing section before eventually fading out]
    - "Welcome Home" [from their third album and possibly their most well-known song; heavier in kind of a metal Zeppelin way; sounds more like this song in this video you've made except the guitar solo isn't short and disappointing lol it turns into some beautiful noodling that goes on for like a full minute or something; has a truly fantastic driving riff throughout]
    - "Time Consumer" [from the first album; just a classic]
    - "Cuts Marked in the March of Men" [second album, interesting and fun, idk]
    - "Three Evils (Embodied in Love and Shadow)" [second album; I get it mixed up with "Cuts Marked" sometimes because they kind of go together story-wise I believe but they're both just really interesting and fun songs]
I'm sure other people can recommend more of their later stuff. But I think these are the songs that really defined them. Most of that have that "terminally climactic" structure that makes them so unique. They build anticipation for a final new cool section instead of just repeating the hook, and the end of the song sounds like a completely different song from the first. (The other band that comes to mind first for me that does that a lot is Tool.)
... Also, I recognize that you did react to "Favor House Atlantic" and that that is from the era I'm saying you need to listen to, but it's the shortest, simplest, poppiest song on the album. That's why it's a "hit"--because it's the only radio-ready song on the album. Not because it's actually fan's favorite from the album.

This really sounds like pop punk of the 2000’s. I think it’s kinda glorious to see them doing it. A slight metal tinge to it. Like polished Killswitch Engage production

Since you mentioned that you're going to be doing new bands in the new year, please listen to something from the band called 3.
3 started out as brothers Joey and Josh Eppard, and a bassist named Chris Bittner who's now a producer. They were a big influence on a guy named Claudio Sanchez, who learned to sing in his unusually high tone by imitating Joey Eppard's natural voice. Joey's is natural, Claudio's was learned from imitation.
Joey Eppard independently made a comic book to go along with 3's first album Paint by Number, but it was too much work to do alone, so he stopped.
Claudio formed a band called Shabutie.
Josh Eppard, 3's drummer, left 3 to drum for Shabutie.
Shabutie changed their name to Coheed and Cambria.
Claudio took Joey Eppard's comic-album tie-in idea and did the same for Coheed and Cambria's albums.
Coheed has often borrowed lyrics and phrases from 3 songs in their own songs.
Coheed got lucky with a risky record deal that 3 turned down and they blew up.
Coheed took 3 with them on tour as openers, but it didn't go so well because people thought 3 was a Coheed copycat band when it was the other way around.
Coheed and Cambria would not exist without 3. Please listen to them. They really, truly deserve the recognition.
3 has a different sound on every album and even crosses genres and styles a ton throughout each album, so anything you listen to will be totally unique and wildly different, making their discography absolutely fascinating. Listen to literally anything from any of their albums and you'll be in for a treat. Some good ones to start with might be the title track on Lay Down the Law, Paint by Number, Astroknot, Careless Kim, Wrong Alright (Gangstaship), Endless Alibi, Broadway Alien, Bedroom in Hell, Dregs, Trust, Queen, Amazedisgrace (aka Amaze Disgrace), My Divided Falling, Bleeding Me Home, These Iron Bones, The Better Half of Me, High Times, Numbers, One With the Sun, Pretty, It's Alive, Only Child, or The Barrier. Literally anything you listen to from 3 will be a great and interesting experience.
