  • They say the best camera for the job is the one you have with you, often times this is true of lighting and a speedlight is the light you should always have with you.
    Join Daniel Norton OnSet as he shows you just how versatile that small flash can be.
    If given the choice in some situations, we'd rather have "big flash" but that doesn't mean that a speedlight cannot be used for a huge range of applications. We will create several photos during this live shooting demo and Daniel will show tips and tricks to get the most out of that small flash you have in your bag.
    NOTE: This event will consist of two 90 minute sessions starting at 12pm and 3pm, join us for one or both!
    Instructor Bio:

    Great vid Dan. It’s cool to see what you can do with the old rectangular head speed lights. 👌

    This is one of my most favourite OnSet sessions as I use speedlites, umbrellas and small/mini softbox and tiny beauty dish and in a similar small space ! Its great seeing Daniel work through the shots, revising light position and angles, solving issues improving the look to arrive at a finished product and concept - helps me a lot in my endeavours and experiments in the quest to be a better lighting guy.
    Regards any negative comments I see below about the model I totally disagree - she maybe a little frosty or moody in character that day but she has a great look and connects and interacts well with the camera.

    Thanks for this, very good information and well discussed. Regarding the comments about the model. I do think they are very unfair. Most models would expect to be working from the moment they get into the shoot. There was a lot of down time in between the shots, lights being changed, etc, talking to the audience by the photographer presenter. I am assuming that she isn’t used to this style of shoot. When she was photographed, she was definitely on the money, no doubt there. That’s what she is being paid for, not for interacting with the audience. Some photographers dont like models doing that at all. It might also have been her first time doing an event at an Adorama event like this. She might be better next time but again, she isn’t being paid to be happy and bubbly. In between the shots I think she looked uncertain, not bored.

  • @shiftingfocusphotography3525

    Daniel and crew, love these vids. I'm 43 minutes in and am questioning why TTL was abandoned for going to manual?
    Seems TTL would've been simple...just adjust flash compensation on the controller for the hair light, the purple gel background and the main light, or am I missing something?
    Concerning WB readings...I'm assuming since the ambient was eliminated, WB *Flash setting used. If ambient is used for a higher % of exposure, Auto WB would actually work better, right?
    As for the orange gel and grid. (laughing emoji with tears) lol Man, I could feel your frustration. Thank you for wrestling the tiger for all of us to see. It's how we handle the pressure of something not working the way we think it should. Either adjust or abandon if the concept isn't being realized. BTW, the purple gel was nicely done IMO. It was a simple setup and probably why it worked so well. The dude with the light spill question got you sidetracked to use a tool that wasn't ideal for the job. Again, very valuable info with this demo.

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer Před 6 lety +1

      We swapped to manual just to show how that's done, no particular technical reason. I almost never use auto white balance, I'd likely keep it on flash or do a custom white balance for the scene. I prefer to keep the same WB in all m shots and auto can/will change with each exposure. Thanks!

  • @Tom_Swiss
    @Tom_Swiss Před 5 lety +1

    FYI: remote flash triggers that support TTL are very expensive. keep that in mind.

  • @DJCENTIF1
    @DJCENTIF1 Před 6 lety +2

    with the shot with the store in the background 1/30 2.8 the model looks great. However, the background is more orange. Could a camera setting change the color to something other than orange?

    • @33167warren
      @33167warren Před 6 lety

      David Centifanto The change of white balance on your camera could help. As the light coming from the flash is about 5500k its colour will remain the same but the background will change. Hope that help. I've watched a video talking about that last year.

    • @HellbellyUK
      @HellbellyUK Před 6 lety +1

      You would add a CTO (orange) gel to your flash and then set your white balance to "Tungsten"

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer Před 6 lety

      You could correct the background color via white balance, but remember you would need to use a gel (in this case some level of CTO) on the flash or else the flash would no longer be the correct color.

  • @GaryBrown139

    I've been watching your video's recently and greatly appreciate them. Perhaps you can explain something to me. Around 12 minutes in you pop open a reflector and I notice the same thing I always see. One side is white an the other gold. From my experience and what I've seen other photographers do; white is used about 50-60% of the time Silver 30% Black 10% and gold once in a blue moon. So why don't manufactures put white and silver opposite. Seems logical based on the use model and would save a considerable amount of time.

  • @nmelcam1

    Great video, just an observation though, modern flashes while in TTL mode, will zoom Off-Camera as you zoom the lens in and out, just as if it was on the camera shoe. But when you lower the flashes built-in diffuser panel then it will default to its lowest zoom length usually around 24-25mm (to optimize diffusion) and will not be able to control the flash zoom either in TTL or Manually until you put the diffusion panel back inside the flash :-)
    You cheated a little as the model you are using is so feakin' gorgeous, their is no way you can take a bad photo of her. I mean you can use one of those very old, cardboard cheap disposable cameras and use a keychain flashlight instead of a flash and she would still come out gorgeous. Her eyes, her skin, her hair, her expression, everything. LOL

  • @robcavenphotography5231
    @robcavenphotography5231 Před 6 lety +4

    Good instructional video. I think one or two comments about the model are a bit rough though. You try standing there in a cramped environment in front of a crowd and wondering where to put your face until called upon to pose. What should she have done instead? Pilates? Also, putting your model at ease is your job too, so occasional jokes linking the size of modifiers to her head (jokes which fell flat) wouldn't have helped. Her posing, and expression, despite the above, were excellent.

    Hi Daniel - Were some of the improvements Zef and Dave made- your hair cut, if so, its a job well done. You always have good models and Anna may look even hotter bored, but great expressions when she turns it on any way. Looks particularly hot when she does not think she is being watched.Model engagement (faked or otherwise) may result in a rate rise, you don't want to encourage that.Not a big fan of watching coffee being drunk, perhaps we could zoom in on the model during this activity.Always learning from your broad casts, keep them up. in my eyes she's photogenic and there's a lot of symmetry in her face, but oh boy, she's not the youngest and beauty is fleeting pretty fast. there's a reason why photographers and agencies prefer either young models that are willing to learn and sprout or models that are maybe older like her but enjoyable to work with. narcissism has killed so many carreers...
