You left out a huge and very important part of the story. ETIM/TIP never formed until the 90s. In the late 80s they were being trained by the CIA to fight with the Mujahadeen coalition to fight the USSR and topple the democratically elected Afghan government. In fact, out of that coalition is where the Northern Alliance, the Taliban, and al Qaeda came from. The Uyghurs left with al Qaeda when the split happened. You also left out that they picked up Salafism while in Afghan training and working with the coalition.
Uyghurs are traditionally Sunnis, but they are, for the most part secular. They're like Christians in the west. Sure, they identify as Christians, but only a few actually practice Christianity in their daily file. Another similarity is that, like western Christians, they have adopted Islamic traditions into their own culture. Salafism, while people try to claim it's been around for centuries, it was only picked up and developed in the 1940s in Pakistan. The founder of the new Salafi practices argued that Sunnis should take up the practices of Salafi, which is the name of the first 3 generations practicing a specific and very literal interpretation of Islam. In the 40s, prominent Sunni scholars argued that the practice was too literal and dangerous. Until the CIA gathered the coalition, in which they also collected Salafists from Pakistan (including Ayman al-Zawahiri), it was mainly practiced in Pakistan. Also, collected by the CIA were Wahhabists from Saudi Arabia (including Osama bin Ladin).
The Uyghur militants returned to Xinjiang with the sole purpose to recruit follow Uyghurs into their new Salafist ideology in which they were successful with the impoverished youths. ETIM was formed for that purpose. It was later changed to TIP or WTIP when ETIM got unto the terrorist lists.
Before 2007, it was the local police force that was dealing with the outbreak of terrorism. Also, until 2007, ETIM was being resisted by the general Uyghur population as they were ETIM's main target for both recruitments of people who didn't resist and terrorist attacks against people who resisted.

This should also be a lesson to both the Government and the people of India, specifically in regarding Kashmir.
The central government should stop antagonising the people, especially when they lack the ability to mount a Chinese style Mass-Incarceration Campaign and since such an operation would not only be unconstitutional but would down right break our country.

Many people have limited understanding of Xinjiang. Xinjiang is not only Uighurs, but there are many ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including Kazakhs, Mongolians, Han people, Hui people, and even Russians. Before the Qing Dynasty, this place was ruled by the Mongols. Two thousand years During the Silk Road period before the Han Dynasty, there were no Uighurs here.Just like the Hui people, the Hui people were exiled to China during the Mongol Empire. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, they launched a rebellion, trying to establish an independent Muslim country in Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, and killed 20 million Han people. Shaanxi province was 2,000 years ago The birthplace of the Qin Dynasty. The mausoleum of China's first emperor is in Shaanxi. Xi'an in Shaanxi has been the capital of China for almost a thousand years. It has never been an area of Hui people. Modern Hui people basically believe in Muslims Han people, because the real Hui people were all killed in that rebellion.

I love how you downplay china’s activity in East Turkistan (Xinjiang) as discrimination.
China has locked millions of Uyghurs in concentration camps where they are being killed, tortured and abused in every way. Women are being forcefully sterilised and some made to forcefully marry Chinese man as a means of diluting the Uyghur population. There is also a mass organ harvesting program going on within the concentration camps.
Uyghur people are being put under strict surveillance inside of their homes and Chinese officers are made to stay in their homes as a means of keeping their eye on them. Mosques are being demolished in the hundreds and anything reminiscent of Uyghur history erased. Uyghur children are being brainwashed in the concentration camps, made to learn Chinese mandarin and forget their connection to their culture and language.
With all this happening, would it suffice to call it “discrimination”??
It is a clear genocide as clear as daylight.
In saying so, I don’t mean to downplay the acts of the TIP as well who have been causing chaos and confusion everywhere they go but don’t try and make the two seem proportionate . What China is doing to the Uyghurs is an ethnic cleansing straight out of Hitler’s playbook.

The so-called leader of TIP Hasan Mahsum was killed in November 2003 in the raid by Pakistani forces in Vaziristan ( part of Pashtunistan that was annexed by British and now occupied by Pakistan), it was not " air strike by US " as author of video claimed. In 1997 he was released from Chinese prison (where he was held for alleged arson attacks) and sent to Afghanistan by Chinese Intelligence, that used him for their purposes. Coalition of 55-nations failed in Afghanistan in 2001-2021 despite of spending $2 trillion, while in 1945 coalition of 55- nations ultimately defeated Nazi Germany. Better leave Afghanistan alone, while China with $8 trillion internal debt and authoritarian regime of total control of population is already set up for collapse.

Buddhism in Central Asia (including Afghanistan, Xinjiang) was gradually destroyed (slaughtered) by Islamic Jihad, and every mosque in Xinjiang was built on the destroyed Buddhist monasteries and the corpses of Buddhist Uyghurs. Fortunately, great figures, Zuo Zongtang (destroyed the world's largest jihad, 15 million Chinese Buddhists were slaughtered by Muslims who wanted to establish the Islamic State), Wang Zhen, and Chen Quanguo prevented the complete Islamization of Xinjiang, thank them for allowing Xinjiang and Northwest China did not become Afghanistan.

The capital of xinjiang that you see today was built in a dzungaria mostly devoid of äny Uighur presence, because dzungaria isn't their homeland. The qing dynasty of China is to be credited for implementing the migration into dzungaria of Uighurs from east turkestan/southern xinjiang and han from China proper. For all intents and purposes all han and Uighurs in dzungaria can probably tell you the county their ancestors migrated from before settling in dzungaria aka northern xinjiang. Funniest thing is how today Uighur radicals cry that han settling in dzungaria today is a threat to Uighurs when they never came from dzungaria, many even going as far as to claim the historical han and hui city Urumqi (oirat for beautiful pasture) as their "capital", forgetting their historal capital kashgar in the Uighur heartland. Note: Urumqi is nowhere near the Uighur homeland. Tells you if given the chance Uighurs will gladly claim what's never been theirs just like they accuse the Chinese of doing.
