Wait till you see the ending of the next episode, or the tracking shot in episode 4. I could go on but I don't want to ruin anything. This show does everything right.
As someone who did hallucinogens back in the day; I feel whoever did the visuals for lights ebbing and fading or the birds forming the spiral before dispersing knew exactly what visuals were supposed to look like. That all being said, this show is a masterpiece of a single season. The best there's ever been. The Wire and Sopranos are excellent shows, worth watching. But the first season of True Detective is lightning in a bottle.
I dunno man. I’ve done mushrooms a few times and acid many times and I never saw anything that profound. The best recreation of visuals that I’ve seen was something Steve-o from jackass did when he had a coiled hose on his lawn then turned water on and the hose begins to slowly gyrate and pulse. That’s bang on. Like I’ve been on acid and seen birds but they never flew out of a legit formation, making shapes in the sky. What is more realistic is staring at a painting or something where the boundaries between the colours begin to morph and “breathe”. Subtle movement of something that exists - not something appearing that isn’t there or significant altering of reality.
@goldboy150 I know exactly what you're saying with the painting thing. It's like, rather than being together on one surface, each colour is on It's own thin sheet of glass and they're stacked on top of each other with each one moving independently.

But I have been on strong hits before where things really get funky. I've never hallucianted something out of thin air before though. It's always been my mind taking what's there and exaggerating the features.
I can't help but cry when Rust talks about his daughter and that sometimes he feels grateful. That she spared him the sin of being a father. It hits so deep.

One of the excellent things about this season is that there are times later on that you'll notice callbacks. And a lot of those callbacks will be to this episode.
This is such a good series! And Rust is such a well written character... his perspective is quite dark and pessimistic, but I find a lot of his philiosophies on the human experience to be very apt. Marty is also a really complicated character, at times showing empathy like with the underage sex worker, but then his relationship with his family (and mistress) is awful. But the acting by everyone is so good, I think this might be Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's best performances. It's a pretty wild ride to the end, can't wait to watch it with you!
There are many reasons to praise s1 of True Detective. The acting, the wrong, etc. IMO, the greatness is rooted in the fact that at it's core it is a character study. These are no stereotype heros, yet we all would watch 10 seasons of these 2 guys...they are that interesting.

A theory I thought of when I watched this season is that those two little circular mirrors on Rust's wall is his way of seeing his daughter again. He says that she had his eyes at some point, so I figure that is his way of simulating looking into his daughter's eyes again.

Aside from that, Rust is the type of dude that probably doesn't give a particular shit about fine-tuning his looks as we do with a regular mirror, so he's got a tiny one to clear his eyes and roll out. But it's most likely the first thing I said.
As someone who loved the King in Yellow book (and cosmic horror in general), I definitely didn't see it's involvement in this series coming, but I absolutely loved it
I want a memory-wiping machine invented, just so I can watch this season for the first time. I love this kind of time-jumping story, but it helps to be a fan of cosmic horror as well.
As someone who has seen Gerald's Game (A Mike Flanagan movie, based on a short story by Stephen King), here's a little tip: DO NOT use a real handcuff for this purpose lol. Use one of those fake, plastic ones so you can break out of em if needed lol
If you start at 9:22 , which is when Marty arrives at the other woman's apartment with handcuffs for some hanky panky, and then you just tap tap tap the right arrow on your keyboard to skip forward incrementally, you can watch Eric's face get progressively more flushed red during the sexytime scenes, and then it clears up after 🤣
Dialogues are very strong,big philosophical enqury really you feel like smth bigger is happening,this shows atmosphere feels unreal...unexplainable that simple cop show could be such masterpiece...
