    The C70 has its quirks for sure, but having used it for the past two years I genuinely think it's one of the best cameras I've ever used. I've had and used the C100, C200, Original BM pocket, Pocket 4K, Pocket 6K and the C70 just works for me. I admit I'm used to the Canon menu's though so that has never bothered me. The thing I like the most about it is being able to expose bang down the middle, no need for the ETTR dance or trying to hit certain ISO's for fear of losing dynamic range. Expose for what you want. Of course I try and stick to the native ISO, but actually the image doesn't really change much until you get too high (not a low light camera), so it makes it all such a nice experience to shoot with. The Pocket 6K is still amazing value though if you can mitigate the IR pollution, that stung me a couple of times, but for the price it's great.

    I've actually been using these cameras together a lot over the last year. The better battery life, autofocus, smaller files etc are great however I must admit the BRAW image that comes out of the Pocket 6K Pro is just something really special that I don't think the C70 quite matches.
    Some quirks of the C70 like the autofocus not working in slow motion (all that's been fixed) and the drop in dynamic range above 60p has been annoying.

      the reason why it has good dynamic range is bc it uses the same technique arri cameras use. Canon's Dual Gain Output sensor, I believe it turns off anything above 60fps, that's why you see the DR drop

    I feel like most people who are buying these cameras aren't CZcamsrs so they have rigs. you need a cage anyways so a v mount battery is gonna be involved most likely. timecode syncs, mics, handles, mounting plates, video transmitters, external displays. by the time you add these things you can ignore how the camera "feels" in the hand and battery life. as someone who uses the BMPCC 6k a lot and edits in resolve its just a better camera unless you're a diehard canon fan or a CZcamsr who doesn't use cameras as much for filmmaking but takes into account fun quick shoots and CZcams videos

    Thanks bro. Great energy and passion shown towards this camera. I can clearly see that 16 stops is more yummy and auto focus........well that's a dream for 6K Pro owners. But it is twice the price. So.......I look forward to BM next offering as RAW is still my first love over those things. And, as you know, using BM 6K Pro always reminds you that this is a film only camera. I have been really really enjoying the Lidar sensor from DJI on my BM. To use a film set up with cinema lenses and have my own focus puller??? Oh that has been delightful. I still trust my 6K Pro with a lot and I am waiting like a cat poised for prey for the next BM offering. Still nice to see what strengths others are bringing though so thanks for he vid!

  • @avdcam
    @avdcam Pƙed rokem +5

    I hate that canon c70 does this out of the box, but if you increase the monitor "Luminance" its actually effects the monitor backlight. +2 works amazingly well in daylight.
    Focus peaking isn't great on Canon in general. It used to be good! (from someone who uses their C70 a lot) Sony's is more what blackmagic does. But Canon is closer to the older school focus peaking where it sharpens edges and while you can pop the red filter on, it's not as a edgy let's say nearly as good.
    Not sure if you found the expanded ND mode - since it's also off by default. Gets you up to 10 stops with stacked NDs.
    Intersting that Canon is sending out cameras more for review now. Took them long enough.

  • @cchondro
    @cchondro Pƙed rokem +2

    Love video breakdowns like this, but I think the big difference between these two cameras is how they were designed. The Blackmagic cameras are full Cinema cameras with mild "hybrid/dslr" styling to make the jump easier for some users. But you will still need to address battery, stability, focus, just like any other Cinema camera. The C70 is Canon's is Hybrid/DSLR Cinema camera. They are designed with two completely different thought processes around them, and you have to approach them in that way. Both amazing cameras, can be used in similar use cases, but not for the same function. Great video though!

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip Pƙed rokem +4

      I disagree. The C70 is not a “hybrid” camera. It’s just Canon’s miniature EOS cinema camera. I’ve shot on C200s, C300 mkiii, C500 mkii, and the C70. The C70 is the little brother. When i think of hybrid cameras i think of the a7Siii.

    • @cchondro
      @cchondro Pƙed rokem

      @@JustinPhillip you know it's funny, rereading my comment I laughed a bit because the C70 is more of a cinema camera than a hybrid. I had to rewatch the video in hopes to understand what I was getting at, and I don't 100% know why I wrote that it's a DSLR/hybrid, but have a general understanding of my orginal take.
      The C70 was the entry into the more Cinema line of Canon cameras and was the first test driver to what is now the R5C. Unlike the Blackmagic Cameras, the C70 is ready to go out of the box. The Blackmagic Cameras need to be rigged out a lot more. Making it more of a "all-in-one" or I guess why I deemed it as a hybrid.
      But at the end of the day, I agree with you. A7Siii is more of a hybrid than the C70. I must have been tripping with this comment lol.

  • @TimButt2
    @TimButt2 Pƙed rokem +2

    Yeah agreed. My biggest complaint off Canon and Sony the last few years has always been menus. They're built for engineers and not camera operators. It's super annoying. Blackmagic gets camera ops. The menu from Blackmagic was designed by a camera op for sure. Meanwhile Canon and Sony both seem to be designed by engineers and a camera op feels it. Otherwise, I like certain aspects of shooting with the Canon and Sony cameras. The C70 is definitely nice. But yeah, that screen is also annoying. Hoping Blackmagic takes note and improves the Pocket line for the battery life, ports, and the ergonomics with future updates.

  • @zeluisbelo
    @zeluisbelo Pƙed rokem +1

    Nice to see your perspetive on the C70. I'm all in on Canon, but for the price it's hard to justify the C70 when video is only a part of what I do. So I've considered blackmagic, but the form factor and the lack of autofocus just had me on hold the past year, waiting for someting better.
    One small note, the video looked great, but for some reason the text was pixelated. Something in your workflow got lost there.
    Keep it up!

      😂 yeah hopefully my intro came across the way I intended to. My biggest potential deal breaker isn’t even screen size but the brightness was roughhhhh especially after being used to 1500 nits. C70 feels like 400 or something.
      But that being said the image is a damn dream!
      Ps: I thought I had the settings right in there haha I’m sure I did something wrong.

      @@initialfocus I mentioned above, but double check your luminance setting (if you still have the camera) +2 on the monitor luminance is much brighter in daylight and fixes this issue for me. Excellent video on the C70. I'm running with the Sony FX30 at the moment. And I really like it. But, I have been looking at other cameras that I would consider upgrading to. And the Canon C70 is one of them. Having had a Canon before, I do love how Canon nails the skin tones with their color science.
    Recently, I've been watching some videos to see what cameras are available now that I might upgrade to. And the C70 is one that keeps impressing me, especially with the built in NDs, the raw LT codec, and the dynamic range. Chances are when it comes time to actually make a move towards an upgrade, I will likely rent a few choices first before deciding which one to go with. Of course, this video has added another point to the C70. Thanks for sharing your experience.

. possibly a power surge?

    The C70 is not full frame and need the speedbooster but that makes it EF Mount
 but the image looks Nice in c-log 2 after some noisereduction.
    The R5C is way more sharp and detailed, but it has no ND filters so you need the ND adaptor witch makes it EF Mount
 and you need the battery grib because it has no battery. The R3 is full frame and is good in low light.. but it has the foto menu 🙈 and no timecode for tentacle sync..

    As far as I've seen, this is my favorite camera to OWN. It's just got everything I need on shoots where I don't feel like renting out big rigs. I've used everything under the sun from BM to Canon, Sony, Red, and Arri. So far, I wouldn't want to own anything but the C70 due to built-in ND's and size with the amount of IO. It's got the ports I need, even if they are small like the mini-XLR when i don't want to run audio separately. But most of the time I run a 32-bit float recorder anyway so that's not an issue. It's got RAW in 4K DCI and tons of other flavors of UHD with great framerate options. The color in Resolve is fantastic and funny enough I asked another cinematographer which shot was my C70 and which was a Komodo, and they chose the C70 thinking it was the Red color science because I had graded it to match well enough. It's really an amazing package in one body that requires no rigging. In the 2 years of owning it I haven't used a cage on it and all I have are 1 BP-A30 and 1 BP-A60. Those last a full day together and really it's just the A60 that can last for most shoots you need. Battery life+no cage+ND's+great image=winner.

It offers strong ergo for single shooters, autofocus, nd, canon colors, internal raw, incredible battery life, affordable media and probably the strongest DR out of the sub 8k market. I would have purchased the C70 on release if it was 3000 USD or lower. Definitely one of the best documentary cameras out there. But in my case it made more sense to get a Lumix S1 and a NiSi ND filter, and cost me just about 1500 for both. I gained an excellent IBIS system and Log profile, lost on high quality autofocus and 4K 120 FPS. But even with three native lenses and cage etc, the S1 was under 4000 USD. Would probably go for a used Lumix S5 next, rather than a C70. Blackmagic is too inconvenient (handling wise) for documentary work

    Canon colors make everything look like a wedding... imo.

    Dude the mini rant on the peaking is just lazy
really lazy 😂 . At that price point the C70 is a really good camera cause it just works without being in your way. Love your stuff with the Blackmagic stuff.

    You should definitely stick with canon if you can’t operate the BM 6k pro properly. 😂

    Ehhh, some of the opening footage looks horribly digital. So I get why some ppl don't like em.

    canon really just made an h.264 machine and charged $5k for it. Such an awfully priced camera.

    I dunno man
 I’m really not trying to be rude, but that opening montage was pretty underwhelming.
