- This is undoubtedly The greatest Riddim to come out of the U.K. With bass duties from my No.1 UK axeman Tony Gad who has played many beautiful lines for Aswad but this one is the undisputable Heavyweight champion of U.K bass lines and this riddim is up there with the (G.R.O.A.T) greatest riddims of all time.
As well as learn this classic bass line I show you the magic behind the line that will help you with your playing and bass line creation. Enjoy

Another thing.. that black Fender Jazz with the '70's block inlays on a maple board. NICE
It’s the fender jazz elite, I’ve got one and they play so nice, imo one of the best jazzes out there
There is one word that describes what you do. Thorough. You don't leave a thing out and I feel like I went to church after one of your videos. Great, great work!
Best bass teacher on the net ...full stop. Others just show off .. this guy teaches you understand what is happening.
The only element that’s missing is the Aswad horn section! It was a great day when I discovered your channel..
Respect from Africa.. Don Chandler...love you.
I miss you bud. You are a godsend to reggae bass. It’s been over a year now. I hope you’re busy not making videos because you’re busy touring or something. I have learnt more from you than from any single bass instructor I’ve ever had except for my headlong run-ins with father time himself.
You are a beautiful soul and I truly appreciate your work, Mr Chandler. Please come back to youtube 🥺
Still miss you, Teacher.
@@deviationblueHeard anything back from Don?
It's so helpful that you include the notation. Also i think your channel is invaluable in that you detail the history of the music and musicians. I always look forward to the next video!
just picked up my bass after 20 years not playing. In those years between i listened to all the tracks you are playing/teaching...from black uhuru, aswad, ini kamoze-LKJ-Bennis Brown-etc etc..and now i can learn them. Manny thanks and greetings from Amsterdam//The Netherlands!!!
I’m a drummer but this is slowly becoming my favorite channel
The best part of reggae is the interplay between the bass, drums and chop (guitar/keys) - knowing what makes the other parts work make you a better drummer.
Congratulations Don for hitting the 30,000 mark! This is the riddim that did it for me with Aswad in 1984!!
Profound! He said make sure you can sing the notes in your head before playing them on the instrument. He made me realize how I’ll be able to eventually tune my bass without a tuner. 🔥
Heard Dennis live ...bassline haunted me all week afterwards.
Best short reggae bass tutorial ever! The bomb!
YOur a top Reggae Bass teacher Don. LOve the cultural history. Too many anoymous Blues artists got lost in history your making sure it don't happen to Reggae artists, that is a brilliant thing. Keep it up sir. Bless.
30k and growing Don. Well deserved as your channel is one of the best for reggae bass hands down.
I also love the version Aswad perform on Live and Direct, one of my favourite albums of all time. Very under rated reggae band over the years.
Yes they do and Revolution riddim
ooooh it's Fdim7 in the middle.. I played it with Dm, Asus4, Gdim7.. what a crazy progression! Also let's not forget craaazy horn section!! It took me forever to figure it out also!
My number one channel for reggae bass, priceless info, and knowledge from Don,thanks so much brother.
Promised Land is one of my favourite basslines. Excelent video as always. I was making a reggae track in my computer but as soon as I saw the notification, I had to drop it and watch this video. This is the best youtube channel for me, and thanks to you I have learnt about Flabba Holt and his less is more philosophy and use of space.
I think this channel is good not only for bass players but for musicians in general, because I like your way of understanding music and paying attention to little things, I think that is what reggae is about. Some people think that reggae is too simple and repetitive because they can't understand music and are only drawn to speed and harmonic complexity. For me, that is a mistake, and i think reggae is very underrated. To me, reggae is the best music.
I wish you all the success, so you can upload more videos. Anyway quality is better than quantity and your videos are all high quality.
As someone who was in the clubs at the time, I can confirm that "Love Fire" was a known song by those of us Aswad fans,
However, it was the release of the Dub album which really blew the track up. That rrack called "Dub Fire" is what sold the album.
Great work.
Hey Brother! Its been months. Miss your videos, keep on jammin' cant wait for your next video.
Hope all is well ❤💛💚
Congrats on reaching thirty thousand subscribers, it’s well deserved! Thank you for continuing to make excellent content.
I thank you guys for getting me there👊🏾
Yo yo yo. We need another donstrumental vid!
Thanks for this Don - Tony Gad played some great bass lines as did the very underrated Vivian Weathers who played bass on LKJ's first three albums.
I have listened to promise land just 🥁 and bass 🔊 alone is tuff its a killah wacked chune mi idren the hi hat follows the 🔊 🎼 just listening to that chune you can 👂 a lot goings-on love fire 🔥 what a wacked chune ease out
Superb! You are doing great work here. One quick note. When Dennis brought the tune into rehearsal we all agreed that we didn’t like the straight hi hat against the swung bass line. So Devon Richardson swung the drum part as well, as you can hear on the popular live version from Crystal Palace. Now the original sounds fine to me, but it bugged us then. Hard agree that this is one of the best bass lines ever, UK or otherwise.
Thank you so much Don, I have been trying to figure out the chords of this song for quite a long time! Enjoy the coffee!
Hmm really? I learned it by ear after the 3rd or 4th time listening to the song. But he does have a great clarity and understand of the overall music and song specifically that it truly helps understanding the musicianship of each song it helps you admire these songs and artists that much more
Definitely heard this sampled by Atmosphere in the song Less One. Really sent me searching for it.
Jr Gong and Nas has this beat as a remake of Dennis Brown's promised land.
Amazing videos, Don
Thanks for this deep dive. History was terrific. Love Aswad. I’ve been playing this bassline incorrectly for 25 years! 😆 thanks for the tab!! It would be interesting to hear how to reproduce the flange sound properly? I use an old DOD ( I think, so old the logo tag is worn off) flanger… it does the trick…
Hey Don!
Gian Morrocco from 11:59 here.
(Changed my username)
Wow I didn’t know George left us!
When did he pass?
I knew him well, he played on our first record and I spent much time at his place in Lancaster rd with his wife Anne daughter Sonia, Ezra and family.
Beautiful times.
Beautiful soul.
Also Drummie Zeb passed in September.
Along the road we go…
Peace to you and yours bro.
Tonny Gad is the best bass player for me. Legend
Oh yeah. I remember this riddim was used in the Jamaican movie Country Man (of 1982? , I think)
Greetings attentive brother, do not stop making your videos so good. I saw you act in Tenerife with Ali Campbell and for me you are a professional. A hug from Tenerife.Big Love
so sad didn't know George Oban passed RIP
Yeah just heard that here.
Was a close friend back in the day. Really sad to hear it.
RIP
Nice to see this channel grow. The content and the presentation is just the best. Useful information without much fuzz and easy to understand. You´re a great teacher. Bless up
What a channel man, microscopic detail. Thanks and keep this coming you’re digging up pure gold. 🙏
I dont think they were on tour with dennis but i know for sure they were doing a sound check playing love fire and dennis walked in and straight away he started singing promised land and the rest is history
Excellent lesson
Thanks for including the personal lives of the players👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
And the overview of the whole song
The drummer and the chord progression
Sets you apart from the others, brother
I love this song so much.
Thanks,
Always on top!
Love this channel's content!
This is excellent! Thanks Don!
Killer vid, as usual. Thank you Don!!!!
One of the deadliest basslines in reggae. I heard Aswad’s Love Fire first and loved it right away, Dennis Brown brought it back to life after that. Bless up Donstrumemtal, give thanks for the works, forward!!!
Big up Don! Excellent as always, Very informative. 🙏🏿
Thank u Don with this scale, I just discovered that can play plenty questions and different answers in this scale...interesting indeed👊
British reggae
is underrated . Great reggae bands that also had great players ..Cimmarons ...Matumbi ..90 degrees inclusive .....UB 40.....Steel pulse ..the original bass player Stepper...loved Delroy Washington basically backed by Aswad......
Best source for reggae bass ! And your sound is awsome.
Outstanding skill and knowledge brother D. 👏🏾👏🏾
Great Channel!!! Just found it!!! Calm voice with a knowledge based appraoch!!!
Oh! That's a beautiful bass guitar.
Warrior charge and promised land are 2 monumental tracks for me, I bought them both when they came out, and I still have them, heavy Basslines, fantastic video as always don , many thanks, I’m going to enjoy playing this one again ☝️
Thank you Don for these awesome lessons! Keep them coming and surely the subscribers will come to you too! Many thanks!
Congratulations Don on the 30k Subs. You totally deserve it, 🔥🔥🇬🇳🏴 loving ur jazz bass sounds great
Great video and thanks so much for the history of how Promiseland came to be. I love hearing such stories on how some of our favorite riddims were created and Promiseland during a sound check rates among the top in my book. Much love and respect from the Central Coast of California!
you are the best Don!
Tuned in as I am Dennis Browns biggest New Zealand fan 🇳🇿haha 😄
Now subscribing to your channel.
Don...respect. I'm learning a lot of you. Keep going on please. Greetings from the Netherlands.
The mighty Aswad! I saw them many times in the late 70's and early 80's. I have three albums of theirs - the yellow album, Showcase I think it's called without looking, which features the mighty Warrior Charge and Back to Africa and I like Thee Babylon off that too. A pretty topical song at the time and one would like to think it isn't so topical anymore but I somehow fear it still is. I also have both New Chapter and the dub version. I also have an original 12" of Dennis Brown's version of the rhythm in question here, Promised Land. Aswad were IMHO at the time the strongest reggae band around in terms of musicianship playing live and I saw a few including several acts touring UK from Jamaica, Sly and Robbie who I saw with the Mighty Diamonds notwithstanding. They would always be appearing at benefit gigs across London, ANL gigs and such where they would invariably blow the top punk bands of the time off the stage and they often played a set at the Notting Hill Carnival. At that time there were not many bands around of any genre who could play at a constantly high standard every gig night after night, more so today perhaps as I think there's a more professional attitude now, but Aswad most definitely could. So anyways, love Aswad, love the rhythm and love the video. Peace :)
Thanks Don. You are so right.. one of the best ever here from Aswad. Just re-listening nice and loud to Dub Fire.. never noticed what an important magic ingredient that hi-hat is so ta!
Love this channel bro i don't even play bass but
This tone... 👌
I guess this is the most recent entry on this amazing channel. Hopefully this brilliant approach to teaching will be applied to more reggae, or even other related genres like funk. The one thing I was most hoping to find one my first binge of this channel is a video that examines the drum patterns you're playing along with, e.g., "Programming the drum parts for the Top 20 ________ bassline". Not so much playing them on drums but just explaining how you approach the construction of the drum part and its relationship each classic bassline, or technique, etc. One of my favorite parts so far has been the one where you show how critical it is that Flabba Holt leaves that space for the kick drum and how you're able to use that concept in your own creations. Also, the range of tempos as they apply to the various style periods of reggae. And for that matter an overall timeline of all the different old school and subsequent genres. You're kicked the door wide open and now the possibilities are endless. In any case, thanks for this channel and I hope whatever gigs have slowed your CZcams output are going brilliantly!
I have come to your comment very late but you make some great points and observations. I will implement every aspect of your message at some point. Just so much to get through. Thanks Kevin.
@doninstrumental I know you show a lot of love to the JA bassmen.....can you do a tutorial on great English reggae bass men and their style ....bassmen.....nuff respect...
Legendary Aswad, my favorite UK reggae band of all time,Steel Pusle a close second.
Yow don...see you with fyah power...shumba youth set was nice bro 🎸
RIP George!
(G.R.O.A.T) Nice twist to the acronym....lol
Great video.
30k 🎉🎉🎉🎉🙏🏻
Best reggae bass channel on CZcams ! Have you considered investing in a rind light ? Gator makes a really cheap one..
Jah Shaka Sound dub plate special. Love Fire
New Chapter in Dub is still one of my top 5.
Heard it on a Damian Marley tune. Love it. Thank you.
Yes, the Damian Marley cut is one of the few with original chords.
Don,I'm a beginner ' I have a ibanez Sr 300 left hand and a weston thunder bass A1 love the channel.
Good
Big up, @Donstrumental. Great tutorials. I know I’m grabbing at straws here…I’m trying to get my daughter who is currently learning to play bass to dig some reggae tunes. The only tune I’ve so far got her hooked on is ”Man next door” If possible I would like you or any who reads this help to find the bass-tabs online. They seem impossible to find or am I looking in the wrong places?
Bless!
"Thank you for chunning in".that's one way you can tell you're true rasta man
Music Dennis brawn promissed land
Hey Don. Do you plan to release another video? I'm missing you're lessons...hope you're doing well! cheers
i appreciate the recognition you are giving to our legendary bass players , which is something i have been complaining about for years , but i would not put this particular BASELINE in the top 20 DENNIS BROWN'S baselines , but that's just me .
Hey Daniel, I don’t think I mention anywhere that this bass line is in the top 20 Dennis Brown bass lines. Too many to choose for me to make that kinda statement👊🏾
@@donstrumental8905 hi again my friend , in terms of specifics you are right , you did not say top 20 , but you did say " ALL TIME GREATEST HITS " , i find it difficult to distinguish between these terms , as a D BROWN fan and former D J who has been to more than 30 of his live performances i know the songs that moved the needle the most , that said your endeavor is a noble one , i myself have always been more interested in the creator's of these legendary baselines , and 9 times out of 10 the origins is jamaica 's greatest music genre , " ROCKSTEADY " .LOL .
Antony Malvo did a cover of luther Vandross's hit song," can u stop the rain" on the this very riddim the promise land riddim i call it , produced by digita B. I Love your work ,keep it up.
The Jamaican versions are always D minor to A minor for some strange reason.
Misty in roots next
I believe it is one of the best live recordings ever put down on tape
Give thanks your channel is very educational. One question what is the effect processor to get that electronic bass sound on the Aswad riddim?
It’s just a sound I found close in Ableton, when I get to the studio next I’ll let you know.
The " Original Bass Don Dub Daddah "
Bredren you nailed it from you make mention Drummie Zeb reggae greatest Drum & Vocal.
Drummie and Tony are up there wid da worlds greatest drum and bass. They get overlooked probably because they’re not from J.A.
proper
New Chapter of Dub AND Uhuru's The Dub Faktor: all time favorites!! Thx 4 the new video 🙂
Hope all is well with ya Don... I know your a bass channel, but can you do a video on Skank techniques.
Big up Don. Believe I saw you playing with African Head Charge recently would that be right? THUNDER sounds man. Loved it.
Yep, that was me.
Yes the story is correct
I like your style(e), coolness and your selection is telepathy for me! I don`t know what is the world`s best bass line, but of my favourite songs is "King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown". Would you play it for me? ... for us???
Thanks for the kind words. The bass line to the Riddim you mention is called Cassava Piece by Augustus Pablo. A bass Line I will definitely feature very soon.
@@donstrumental8905 the singer's version is Jacob "Killer" Miller with "baby I love you so" Thank you for the answer!
hold on to what you ve got.......check bass line.....
I attempt my own interpretation of reggae punk kinda thing, I've got about 5 songs I can place in that category.
Still very much learning my way, a lot of it is very DIY, my biggest problem is finger play and drums, as I produced everything myself I use electronic drum pads that aren't ideal plus I'm not a drummer by any standards.
Saying all that I believe I still managed to make some ok recognisable songs out of what I do.
Guess it's just got to come from the heart.
Another problem I find is the right effects to use with bass and guitars, never am happy finding that right sound, it's always too much echo or just too distant, it's just a hard sound to nail down if you just playing everything by ear.
I did a denis brown cover funny enough, but it was a mix cover of him and a band called headjam, so two songs in one.
Can't remember what bass line I used for it.
Boa noite
🤩🎸🎶👍🏼
🔥🔥🔥🙌
Man I love your videos

Thank you Donstrumental. Are you able to share the software you are using to type bass tablature? I usually write it on paper but I would love to find software to assist me.
Are you not doing any videos anymore?
I love your channel, Don! Huge thanks 😃

Don--- great channel. Question.. I've been to a few yt bass lessons forums from bassist giving lessons, advise, etc, etc... I've asked these musicains what is their professional opinion on Robbie Shakespeare. None of them replied. Thoughts Don?
He has a full video on him.
Robbie Shakespeare was a Reggae Bass Master. All of the bass players I mention on my channel are masters who created something out of nothing. The Genre was still a baby when they were creating this great music with the limited resources at their possession. Hope that answers your question.
