You've asked so here's the answer. The most asked question in the comments. How do you get that Tone. All of your favourite players have a sound. That sound comes from a chain of different processes. Mastering, Mixing, Studio, Engineer, Amp, EQ, Guitar. All this aside, the sound starts with YOU. Work on good technique and the sound will happen naturally. Late to the party, here. I play with a plectrum (which probably enrages purists). To get a good round, heavy tone, I play near the bridge and palm mute a bit. Also there's a bit of a habit to get with the plectrum, using a moderately thick one (0.80mm tortex for me), and holding it a little bit loose between the fingers to soften the attack.

I'm no expert on bass playing but just from listening, the difference between Family Man and other reggae bass players that I've observed. Is that family seems to play bass around Bob's vocal changes which makes his playing more melodious and interest. Other bass players finds a 1 bar melody and play that loop almost through the whole track with one change in the variation thrown in.

I would agree that the way the songs are written makes the bass lines more interesting. As the creator in the studio it is still down to the choices you make when recording, creating bass lines that stick in your head is not easy.

Don I love your videos , do you ever play a 5 string and go lower ? Only vids Ive seen you are on the 4 string (my preferred Bass) I enjoyed the Cuss Riddim vid and I can play along to that nicely. Ive also taken your advice and got a 10 track Dub playlist, got some LKJ , in there , Horace Andy , roots , I’m a massive fan of the melodica. My problem with playing Bass is knowing how powerful just dropping out can be. I tend to feel the need to always be playing. Your Rhythms are really helping me to hold back. Quality not quantity. Anyway , Im gonna get a T shirt , and enjoying what you do. Thanks for sharing. ❤ from Lee in Milton Keynes.

Thank you Lee, most people are not aware that the 5 string only has 5 more notes than a 4 string. I played 5 string for years, when I got deeper into producing I realised the sonic range of the 4 string is perfect, no need for those extra 5 notes, that’s the reason I play 4 string.

I totally get it , I’m looking to get the Line 6 pedal to try and get that scientist vibe going , seen a few on Ebay , £80 / £100 , give or take. Will you keep us posted if you are playing live anywhere soon, id love to come and see you live. Im 44 now . i started playing punk in bands at 15, but growing up , my Mum , now 68, would always play tighten up vol 2 on vinyl, so appreciate the Pioneers , Harry J Allstars , the Upsetters etc, all the classics. As an adult Ive been to see two tone bands including the Beat , before Rankin Roger died. But my fave story of my Mum , is when Bob Marley played Hammersmith odeon in 1976, and she went to see him live. I can only imagine being there. As A kid Mum had Peter Tosh and other greats on vinyl . One of my favourite tracks of all time is Third world , 96 degrees in the shade. Anyway I’m gonna be ordering a Riddim up T shirt soon , and representing ! Thanks for the reply its made my day ❤
