That’s right it’s me, I’m currently not in a Napoleonic phase but I just had to click as soon as I saw this notification, this is a subject that I’ve really wanted to explore for a few years now, I’m gonna save it to watch later and I’ll be back in around 10 weeks when I start my annual summer Napoleon phase 😂

fighting from entrenchments or other defensive positions was pretty commonplace from the beginning of reliable matchlocks in the late 15th century. There was also urban fighting when an attacking army during that period would break through the walls of a city.

Brings to mind the urban combat of the Battle of Leipzig and Plancenoit, many times changing hands until the battle turned in favor of the winning side!!!

Fantastic video and subject. I can remember a number of your deep dive videos involving urban combat and reading about units going into a BUA clearing out an enemy only to be pushed out themselves a short time later with a real seesaw of combat and occupation.

5:00 Casualties for FIBUA are now expected to be up to 80%. Not only is it costly it is very manpower intensive.

I will be putting on Aspern Essling in 28mm using the Carnage and Glory rules at the HMGS Historicon convention this July. In preparation I have been playtesting warfare in urban or built up areas. After listening to your description of replicating urban warfare using Black Powder I think these rules are too inflexible to really replicate the ebb and flow of urban warfare. In Carnage and Glory, while the basic infantry element typically a battalion, for Aspern Essling the system allows me to split each French battalion into a unit of the fusilier companies for each battalion and converged elites units, combining all three companies of legere and grenadiers of the regiment into separate units. This converging of the elite companies is an under appreciated standard tactic of the French throughout the period. Organizing each battalion in this manner allow for a more nuanced approach to urban fighting. We believe that French defenders, either fusilier or elite, should be deployed in open order to take advantage of the unique defensive characteristics of each built up area. This should result in a fluid combat where the French and Austrians may capture, be expelled and recapture portions of the built up area. 3:1 or 5:1 odds are meaningless to the attacker given that in assaulting urban areas there is a limited area to attacking deploy troops. That is what the Austrians found at Aspern Essling despite outnumbering the French by those odds at any given time.

Fortresses/buiding complexes in reality should use elite units to garrison very effectively. They defended key positions like super humans; take Waterloo for example; the British Guards defending among others the Hougoumont complex, Baring's Rifle battalion among others defending La Haie Sainte most of the battle, and the Young Guard and 1.5 battalions of Old Guard fiercely defending Plancenoit billage.

I've always loved this topic, it sounds so brutal. I have read accounts of the fighting at Ligny and Plancenoit. At that time the opponents were extremely bitter and hateful towards each other.
Troops would cry "No quarter" and both sides would neither ask for, nor give, mercy. Horrific stuff.

I'm making a mod for Napoleon total war and I'm using ur vids to collect info for different flavors for each nation, if that makes sense 😂.

Logistics, logistics, logistics. You know what logistics likes? Roads. Do you know where roads are made? In peacetime they are made and used for commercial civilian traffic that live in urban centers. The result is if you want to supply your army with efficient logistics you will get into urban combat. If you want to deny the enemy road nexus for logistics you will attack the urban centers they occupy.

Funnily enough I played that very scenario this week to see how it plays out for your event (going live on my channel tonight czcams.com/video/GZjrkDQCzfw/video.htmlsi=ADC2ZCa8RW3XM--d). Artillery was the key. Get them to medium range of the BUA and it’s uncomfortable for the defence as the -2 morale save negates the building defence.

We’ve had quite a few games involving BUA’s recently and they are tough to take unless I’m rolling for the break test 🤦🏻‍♂️ just to note the standard combat modifier is +3 and 2 shooting dice per face, I’m not sure if you guys have your own stats ?

I've done a getting started peninsular French here czcams.com/video/pkRAaccMm5c/video.html but looking back, not a generic French (not including the Waterloo box set!) The getting started getting started if due next month, I'm just finishing it off this week!
