I found out that the Yeti really only worked for a few months, less than a year, and then it was discovered by engineers that if it continued moving it could have a catastrophic breakdown. I feel lucky that I was able to see the yeti move in person before this now Disco version.
+DisInfinityPonyGeek Nope, there's a problem with the way he's mounted. Insufficient time was given for his concrete to cure, so over the couple years in which he was functioning (they turned him on occasionally until 2007 or 2009), the fact that he's a robot weighing hundreds of pounds swinging on faulty concrete made it become more unstable. There is a plan in waiting that would involve NO ride closure and would get it all fixed, but that would cut into some Disney executive's bonus.
+AD Machine actually the foundation it was on top of was not taking the stress of the speed and power of the animatronic so they kind of switched him off they can't fix it because the entire mountain is built around him. They now just use strobe effects to replicate movement
AD Machine what happend is it broke the foundation under it, but not the whole platform. They thought that stopping the whole ride to fix it was unnecessary, so they just don't let it move anymore :)
I'm so mad that I never got to see the real yeti in action! The way that the riders get so pumped and excited when he reaches out makes me so jealous. The very sad part is that Disney is likely not going to fix this. And if they do, it won't be any time soon. But hey, the roller coaster is still a roller coaster and that's good enough for me. But those 3 seconds you see the yeti make the whole ride very memorable.
Teachworth01 It was a beauty but unfortunately now has a steady light on him. No more strobe effects. Disney ruined this ride and Dinosaur. If I could've rode the 2005-08 version it would be cool.
@@JohnnyHandsomeᵗᵐ it wasn’t enough time. They’re looking at a LONG closure for EE to fix it. They’d have to rip the top of the mountain off to get the yeti out, then they’d have to do some major structural changes to fix the concrete that’s splitting. The closure wasn’t long enough for them to fix it. And they halted all construction during the closure for safety to keep people out of the parks.Joe Rohde desperately wanted the yeti fixed and was known to push for it but with his retirement who knows what’s gonna happen.
A head imagineer at Disney has said that he does want to fix it, but it just isn’t Disney’s main priority right now, and isn’t currently in their best interest after the parks just reopened and Everest is a big crowd pleaser. People wouldn’t be too happy if they closed it for renovation.
I understand that they wanted it to feel as real as possible and that he only appears briefly for the sake of the story, but man, I really wish that we were allowed to observe it for a longer time. It's just so awesome.
i remember when i was 5 and went on this ride with my dad after it had just opened and the yeti still jumped down at riders. ever since then i'd had a phobia of roller coasters thanks to this yeti and solely this yeti. i got over my phobia but man this brings back memories haha
As someone who draws a lot, I've done so many pictures that were inspired by this ride. I've even come up with some stories involving a yeti, but they're not very good, lol.
When my family went to Disney in August , 2006 ,(the month that expedition Everest opened) my brother was 10 and I asked for him to go on it before me to see if I could handle it because I was 7 at the time. He went on it and he loved it so he made me go on. I loved the museum walk through while we were waiting to go on. Our car came up and I got in. I was fine until we got to the yeti. We had the front row and my brother didnt tell me about the yeti because he wanted to see what my reaction would be. He swung his arm right at my face and I had a panic attack and passed out! I was fine and I wanted to go on again. My parents didn't want me to pass out again so they said "maybe another time". I came back with my girlfriend this year and I was so disappointed to see that it didn't move anymore! This is still my favorite ride but I was hoping to see that hand In my face at least one more time. I really hope they bring the motion back to the yeti sometime in the future.
I know exactly what you mean, I feel so lucky that I got to ride it in September 2006, the motion of his arm felt like he was going to touch you! It's a shame most people won't get to experience that.
Great video! Also, none of this is officially confirmed by Disney, but there is a lot of talk that after Avatar Land opens in 2017, they will FINALLY shut down Expedition Everest for a major refurb and fix the yeti! Also, at D23, imagineer Joe Rhode said the yeti would eventually be repaired. He didn't give a time frame, but if Joe Rhode says it will be fixed, it will definitely be fixed!
I remember going there about 9 years ago, so I guess in 2007. I was about 6 at the time, I remember the yeti moving and how scary it was! I went again in 2012 when I was about 11 and it didn't move and I thought it was just my child imagination confusing me! Apparently it was real! So excited to hear it will be working again :)
Here's something: If they fixed the yeti, they'd have to tear the whole top of the mountain off, fix it, fix the yeti, then put it back together. 3-5 years. Well, if it happened, I wouldn't mind. I'd be sad to see disco yeti go though.
Disney has semi brought the yeti back to its original state, the yeti does not move at all at the moment, but the lights inside the cave where the yeti is located are turned on so you can clearly see the yeti while the strobes are still on, so you can see the yeti, but just not in action, I was lucky enough to ride this ride when the yeti was in A Mode back in 2006, and just seeing the lights inside that cave turned on brought back amazing childhood memories
Wow this is a gem of a video. I'm very impressed. I'm pretty sure I managed to get on the ride before the Yeti had to get turned off. I remember being legitimately freaked out and actually ducked my head lmao. Gotta love animatronics.
To anyone's who's ever been worried that Expedition Everest might be unsafe: Just know that if the Imagineers didn't trust the ride to be safe for people then it wouldn't be there. When I was little I was always paranoid that I might fly out of the car at the huge drop at the end of Splash Mountain, but my mother always reassured me that it was perfectly safe.
It's like a car that hasn't been turned on for years. By now they'd have to start from scratch all the moving parts have got to be damaged from the Florida humidity even if it's indoors. My thought is they're gonna redo the whole ride before they just fix the yeti. So if it gets fixed it won't be the same ride when it reopens.
So much more impressive. When we rode it, we didn't even know where to look so I never saw Disco Yeti in real life, and the track style was too hard on my wife's neck to try a second pass.
I feel like the only way to convince Disney to refurbish the ride would be to boycott it. But obviously, that's not gonna happen. We can only pray that some other thing goes wrong that will force them to close it.
@PrincessZeldaRose My brother works at WDW too, he said they turned it off because it was breaking the foundation that it was on. Is that true? Or did it's back just break?
Back when it opened. The yeti would move. But in 2006, issues started. Cracks formed under the ground of the yeti ,so Disney had a problem, close the ride to fix it, or keep it open but disable it? They chose the latter, putting the Yeti into B-mode, which is known as Disco Yeti. But from around 2019. Disney put the yeti into C-mode. Deactiving the strobe lighting. Tl;DR: It did move, but cracked.
Fell down a rabbit hope of Disney ride videos..... everybody talks about the Yeti so I wanted to check it out. I've watched many many videos and still don't think I'm getting the full "experience" of it. It just happens so fast that you can't really tell what's happening. I know what he's suppose to be doing and I've done a lot of research so I get it but so many people are like "Omg that's so crazy wooooow" , in the comments and I'm over here like😒😒😒. Haha
The didn't stop the Yeti because of energy consumption, it runs off of compressed air. They stopped the Yeti because there's a crack at the base of the Yeti's structure. The only way that they can fix it is during a major refurbrishment.
At time 2:54, I noticed a part of the thing he is standing on breaking a tad. If you look at the bottom, there is a part of the back of the beam that he breaks in that video. I am not sure if this is the correct effect. Looking at it closely, I Wonder if this is part of the problem of why he is now in Disco (a.k.a. "B mode")? I have heard the problem is that the support structure for him is damaged but I could be wrong.
I have never been on this ride, or to any Disney park, but I believe that scene is a projection foreshadowing the broken rail at the top of the ride. The real Yeti animatronic is at 3:30 :)
If you were ever lucky enough to see this treasure ir. It will never work in it's full function A mode again. It is just too expensive to fix. So it B mode Disco Yetti it will stay.
Seriously though, thanks for posting this video. At least it's cool to see a video of the yeti working. :) (Ok I'll shut up and stop posting comments now xD)
I really hope someday Disney finally makes the decision to fix the yeti. If they have the money to make shitty remakes the they probably have enough to fix it.
Yeah the coaster would ride the track backwards, in my opinion the best part of the ride aside from the Yeti swinging his arm at you (back in 2006 when I rode it).
It wouldn't take several years to fix it. The time it would take is not even the main problem. The real problem is that the bean counters decided it's just not wasted tons of time and money fixing a part that works fine without moving. Animal kingdom has few rides and is one of the least popular of the parks. If they took out the main attraction for a repair like that, they would lose money to repair it, and lose money because much less people would come. The strobe lights work well enough...
That broken track is not to stop the cart you know? That's a myth. It's just for decoration. The actual track system would have to break in multiple significant ways for it to career off the end. The odds of that are negligible.
I found out that the Yeti really only worked for a few months, less than a year, and then it was discovered by engineers that if it continued moving it could have a catastrophic breakdown. I feel lucky that I was able to see the yeti move in person before this now Disco version.
really, I thought they removed it because they thought younger riders would be too scared/it would be too scary for younger riders...
+DisInfinityPonyGeek Nope, there's a problem with the way he's mounted. As such, we're eternally stuck with the Disco Yeti.
SAME!
Disco Yeti will be repaired in 2017.0
Wait, so that's the Yeti in full A-Mode? That is one heck of an animatronic.
Yep. It's so sad he broke down and can't move.
+AD Machine actually the foundation it was on top of was not taking the stress of the speed and power of the animatronic so they kind of switched him off they can't fix it because the entire mountain is built around him. They now just use strobe effects to replicate movement
Jamie Powell Yes, but rumor also has it that the mounting also split and cracked. Nobody really knows.
AD Machine yea they are keeping it a secret
AD Machine what happend is it broke the foundation under it, but not the whole platform. They thought that stopping the whole ride to fix it was unnecessary, so they just don't let it move anymore :)
That yeti, just trying to give you a friendly high five :(
I thought he was asking for money for touring his mountain
I'm so mad that I never got to see the real yeti in action! The way that the riders get so pumped and excited when he reaches out makes me so jealous. Disney will fix it, but we need to wait.
During the pandemic would’ve been perfect timing to fix the Yeti.

Disco Yeti will be repaired in 2017. Stay tuned!
+Scarlet yup and I'm super excited for it!!
Hey im replying in 2018 so i know that the yeti has been fixed. you probably already know its been fixed but if you dont, well now you do :)
I know exactly what you mean, I feel so lucky that I got to ride it in September 2006, the motion of his arm felt like he was going to touch you! It's a shame most people won't get to experience that.
Christian Cardoso its already 2020, i rode the rollercoaster in 2019 and it is still disco yeti... with the strobe lights.
“how gentle this is!”
*camera shaking wildly*

SAVE DISCO YETI 2K17
What do they mean by catastrophic? risk to the public using the ride or it will be ultimately broken and unrepairable?
They sealed the foundation of "shell" ie the mountain around the animatronic and it shares the same concrete foundation.
I went this year but I am going next year as well did they give any kind of time frame of when they will fix it because I really wanna ride it again.
Here's something:
If they fixed the yeti, they'd have to tear the whole top of the mountain off, fix it, fix the yeti, then put it back together.
3-5 years.
Well, if it happened, I wouldn't mind. I'd be sad to see disco yeti go though.
Why not disco annamatronic so you get movement with added atmosphere
I'm so glad I got to see it when it was working.

The only way to experience the yeti...
Is the yeti on this ride named Betty and is she Harold's girlfriend? Harold is the yeti from the Matterhorn btw.
I never even knew yeti was there cause i never noticed it
I was there for this version. It was fantastic and terrifying.
to this day, this is one of my favorite rides.
I went the year it opened when I was 4 and it scared the daylights out of me. I'm almost 16 now.
Edit: 22 now lol.
The Green Phoenix Legend
Now you're like, 20 huh? Thats amazing
Erin Burkham omg someone here at the same time as me
my mama is good luck every ride we got on we have got front row seats
I was lucky enough to be there on the last year when the yeti was in a-mode it was amazing I wish I could see it again man :(
This is the best Expedition Everest pov
So much more impressive. When we rode it, we didn't even know where to look so I never saw Disco Yeti in real life, and the track style was too hard on my wife's neck to try a second pass.
The part where you go backwards is so scary the Yeti is pretty scary looking too !!
2:27 you can find the rare bird on the top left
And now we have a new Disney meme, we call it “DISCO YETIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII”
It sucks that the yeti doesn't move anymore, I rode this ride when the yeti was in A Mode and it fully moved, that thing was insane!
@PrincessZeldaRose Thanks for clearing that up for me. This is one of my favorite rides so I truly hope they can fix and bring that Yeti back!
I never knew they actually shone a light on it so you could see it
This is awesome. I wish I would've rode it when I had the chance to see the Yeti but I was a chicken.

I love it

@linzziscool16 actually, the ride opened in 2006.
Hoping they can fix this beauty, what with Pandora. Chop chop, Disney!
@PrincessZeldaRose Wow, it's that massive of a project? That's crazy. But eventually they will have to shut the ride down to get the other Yeti in?
@PrincessZeldaRose Well, I appriciate you clearing all that up for me.
3:26
@PrincessZeldaRose So Disney basicly has the broken one just sitting in the ride with a strobe light on him then?

how long has it actually been broken for
2AL9 10 years it stoped working in 2006

The Yeti.
Nuff said.
Nice video, but I thought you were gonna drop the camera xD
3:30 their reactions lmfaoo me too buddy
Rip yeti
Fs in the chat for the yeti A mode.
It’s 2019 and the Yeti still doesn’t work!
I don't think the Yeti will ever move again. Disney is bleeding money from COVID.

Seriously though, thanks for posting this video. At least it's cool to see a video of the yeti working. :) (Ok I'll shut up and stop posting comments now xD)
are you sad that the yeti is not there any more
yay
ah yes, back when the yeti was still working, and people didn't throw their hair ties on the side of the mountain.
3:29 - You're welcome.
Does it count that I experienced a minus mode?
DISCO YETI!!!!
Wow
Fuck disco yeti bring A mode yeti back!
I really hope someday Disney finally makes the decision to fix the yeti. If they have the money to make shitty remakes the they probably have enough to fix it.
So what happens when you hit the dead end? You go backwards?
Caitlyn S yes
Yeah the coaster would ride the track backwards, in my opinion the best part of the ride aside from the Yeti swinging his arm at you (back in 2006 when I rode it).
DIISCO YETIII
#FixTheYetiDisney
Disney land is a dark place... They have a lake were people swim and boat yet there crocodiles in it 0-0
So,there not fixing the yeti:(
I think they would have to dismantle the whole ride but that’s what someone else said
It's closed rn they aren't fixing that part
Bob did not eat your brother. He's cut out fatty foods. Humans have a high cholesterol level.
It wouldn't take several years to fix it. The time it would take is not even the main problem. what happend if the cart was going so fast, it just ran right through the broken track at the top of the mouontain....
Then it would be a SPECTACULAR crash. Similar to the train at the end of Back To The Future III
That broken track is not to stop the cart you know? That's a myth. It's just for decoration. The actual track system would have to break in multiple significant ways for it to career off the end. The odds of that are negligible.
meh, disco yeti is just as good. Don't bother fixing it...
Awfully ironic to be thinking of a negative scenario when your username is "teamoptimity."
So it's 2018 and Disney just bought fox for billions!!!. And ..... yeah yeti still is broken.
thats not A mode thats A-
the ride isnt even good
Fuck You
