  • New to the guitarlele? In this guitalele (or guitarlele) tutorial I'm going to show you the first 3 chords that you learn on the ukulele and how they work on the guitarlele.
New Guitarlele Course for Ukulele & Guitar Players - bit.ly/2rs18AN
When you first pick up the ukulele, the first 3 chords taught are the C, F, and G chords. Not only are these easy to play (the G being the most difficult) but they also make up the I, IV, and V chords in the key of C, which will allow you to play a Blues in C and many early Rock and Roll songs.
Since many people that gravitate towards the guitarlele are ukulele players, I want to show you how to play these chords on the guitalele.
If you are a guitar player coming to the guitarlele then you will recognize the C chord shape as a G chord on the guitar, the F chord shape as the C chord on the guitar, and the G chord shape as the D chord on the guitar.
Yes, the tuning of guitarlele is essentially a 4th up from the guitar.
Now, the guitarlele and the ukulele are tuned exactly the same (from high to low) A - E - C - G but the guitarlele also adds 2 lower strings, the D and the A string.
Although the C and F chords are fairly easy to play on the ukulele, they are a bit more difficult to play on the guitarlele because you have to add an additional finger and because the neck of the guitarlele is wider than the traditional ukulele.
The G chord is identical on both the ukulele and the guitalele.
For this lesson we are going to use a simple D DU D DU pattern.
    The progression is going to go C - F - C - G.
Quote of the day: "Never fail because you didn't work hard enough"

I'm an old guitar player and just got a guitalele as a gift from a close friend - your video is so super easy to follow and I was surprised how easy it was to pick up after not really having touched my guitar for over a decade - it was so exciting to strum along at the end with the chord transitions - it brought me joy today :)

Its like using the circle of fifths where the the fifth note will take the shape of the root chord. Like in the BEADGCF - the G chord will take the shape of a D chords in a normal guitar, and the D chord will take the shape of A chord from the normal guitar chord

Terry, I watched your video showing the difference between guitalele and guitar last year. I like your style and personality. So that hooked me. I used to strum chords on guitar years ago. But I stopped and have forgotten everything. Also am not well versed in guitar lingo so I'm learning. I actually used to goof around on a ukulele when I was a kid and knew those 3 chords! I figured out how to play Rudolph the red nosed reindeer when I was about 8. Lol Last week, I received a guitalele for Christmas from my husband! (I bought him a 55 gallon fish tank for his gift!) Anyway, I will be checking in on your lessons here. Thank you so much!

I’ve read that guitarlele tuning and requinta guitar tuning are the same (ADGCEA), the difference being the size of the soundbox. But I see requinta tutorials using EADGBE tuning. I want to learn requinta via the guitarlele I have, and reward myself with a real requinta later. I know tuning is whatever the artist needs it to be, but I’m not an artist yet, so in the learning phase I want to follow convention. (Though I do use FA#DG tuning on my ukes). Advice?
