You got that GL1 sounding really good, man. Thanks for doing the homework so the rest of us can benefit, Joao.
That's so kind, thank you!
Good video. Thanks!
thank you for the tutorial!!! :)
Great video, very helpful. Muito obrigado
Thank you! Aloha!
Thank You so much for your video on the Yamaha GL1 Guitalele, I have been a classical guitar student for some 50 years, on and off, and a few years back I took up the Ukulele, joined a ukulele singing group, but I still love the Spanish guitar, unfortunately My arthritis makes playing long fret stretches difficult sometimes. after seeing your video I bought a GL1 and fitted the Hannabach 890MT strings for a 1/8 guitar as you suggested, and the sound and intonation of this little Guitar is extremely nice, and the shorter fret board, enables me to finger the chords with ease now. Also it is easier to carry it about, with the Ukulele. Kind regards John Crookes Yorkshire, England.
This is awesome to know, John. I hope you are enjoying it. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Aloha!
Very hepful! Thank you, Sir!
Thanks! Aloha!
I just designed and 3D printed a custom nylon saddle for my guitalele so I can intonate it flatter, it is like a normal saddle except it is shaped like an L, so it fits in a normal saddle bridge slot but can be intonated twice as far back. This significantly helped me, and I was able to get one printed for about $15USD
How can i get this?

Thanks!
Thank you sir❤ that was very informative and helpful!
Thank you so much. Been looking for a solution for a long time.
That's great, thanks!
Thank you for the information, it is very useful.
Thx for the test!
Nice to have your feedback. Thank you!
Considering a small guitar, so YAMAHA GL1 might be a good choice for me. However, could not find any of those string brands in local stores in Latvia. We have only Daddario, Elixir, GHS, Martin, Ernie Ball, Hernandez. No idea which ones would be OK to turn GL1 into a guitar. But as I'm just a beginner, maybe it does not matter much, as long as I tune it to the standard guitar tuning.
Thanks for doing this test. I have a guitalele strung with high tension classical guitar strings and tuned to standard E. It's very handy but the intonation at the higher frets is not good, so I'm looking for a different set of strings to put on it.
That's great, I think you'll be amazed by the Hannabach ones. Nowadays I'm using the fluorocarbon version on my ukuleles and they are perfect.
Please tell me in the future if you did some test and the result, it's good to know. Cheers!
IVE BEEN USING THE LA BELLA GUITALELE SPECIFIC STRINGS AND IT SOUNDS PRETTY DECENT.
@@TocaUkulele so material makes a big difference? And these don't require a truss rod?
@@reflexreaction3797 Oh for sure, they make a huge difference. About the truss rod, once I had a ukulele with truss rod, but never a guitalele. I played a Ibanez Piccolo in Czech Republic in 2017 but I really don't remember if it's equipped with a truss rod. I know that the guitaleles from Kmise, Lanikai and Caramel comes with truss rod. For sure other brands are doing the same. A luthier from Hawaii once taught me that a truss rod is necessary when the wood is not well prepared or the project is not that good, or when the region where the instrument is going to be used has lots of differences about climate changes, humidity and things like that. They like instead to prepare the instrument to be good on its own with everything well calculated that a truss rod won't be necessary. Opinion changes from one luthier to other ones, but in practice we almost don't see the truss rod in the ukulele world, but it's more common on guitalele and in some baritone ones. Thanks for passing by, aloha!
@@TocaUkulele Thanks for the reply, all i've learned from web searches and youtube is that you'd definitely need a truss rod if using metal strings. Which is why you absolutely shouldn't put steel strings on the Yamaha GL1 for example. I'm aware of Caramel and Kmise, such a pity that Caramel is out of production, it seemed the best of them all. So i asked you about the truss rod because i wasn't sure if "carbonwhatever" was something similar to metal... lol. Btw i've had a no-name mini guitar break in halves on me once and i suspect this may have been the reason, i was using metal strings but didn't have a clue if it was actually "fit" to take them.
We have one more option. Maybe you can probe it, and make very interesting video.
The option is take strings original from guitalele, and put the strings six on place five, the five string on fourth place, the fourth string on place three, the three strin on place two, and the two string on place one... and for the place six, take one string for guitar of seven strings, take the seven, and put it on place six. So the string seven is B lower, but the tension maybe is normal on 44 cm., and in theory can give de E lower for guitar. I have see one from Hannabach. Maybe in Brazil you can easy get one. The only diferent is the third string is not flat. I hope you like that.
Your vídeos in english are more clear for million peoples than portuguese. Is a beautiful languaje, but I don't understand too much.Grettings from Spain.
Thank you very much for your suggestion. A friend once told me about this test, but I didn't have the opportunity to do it.
I have here other solutions, so I'll record those new solutions and the one you suggested me. It will take some time because I have to record with 5 different strings, but as soon as possible it will be here.
And thanks for the detail about language. From now on I'll be posting English videos, also starting the English lives as well (I'll keep the Portuguese, so the channel will be in both languages). I hope to see you again. Thanks!
Just bought the strings. Can't wait to test it. Aloha!
I have not seen a 7 string nylon.
@@TocaUkulele Hello, I don't know if you remember that we talked a long time ago about the tuning of the guitalele as a guitar. I have got a new form. Using low tension strings, for classical guitar, brand AGUSTINE. The tension with which it remains is good, and the strings are not soft. With higher tension strings, you have to loosen them too much. But these are fine. Greetings.
@@estudiantedeciclos5973 Hi, In my country India, 7 string classical guitar strings are not available. Do you have any idea which strings we can use for the 6the low E string? The rest of the 5 strings are working fine the way you suggested.
Thank you very much!
Aquila makes strings designed for that tuning
which ones to buy exactly, please, if you give me a link?
@@reflexreaction3797 Aquila 187C
Thank you!
How about 153C?
@@anjasyudismita Aquila 153C that's the one
Ficou bom em, estou pensando em comprar um bichinho desse!
Vai curtir, Tiago! Manda ver!!
Exactly what I was looking for! I had a problem with finding a right guitar to take backpacking with me cause all of them will either extremely expensive or had weight of something like 2.3 kilos. While buying a guitalele and the right steings seems like a perfect solution. Let me know if you still think that hannabach strings are the best to pair with yamah gl1. If they are I'm going to buy that combination straight away. Greetings Frank
Hi, Frank! The Hannabach are the best to do it. I bought some again last year and this year. Absolutely perfect! Please find it here: amzn.to/47rX4lH
All the best!
@@TocaUkulele Just ordered the guitalele and strings. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for this!!! By the way, can someone tell me what the Flamenco song João plays to compare strings?
Hello Micky, thank you! This is just an improvisation, somehow it reminds me of Malagueña, by Paco de Lucía/Ricardo Modrego (specially the end of the song). All the best!
Aquila strings set for standard tuning
Hi. What is that angular instrument behind your right shoulder…it looks beautiful. Brand please 😀
Hi! It's a handmade tahitian ukulele. They're wonderful and so unique!
Even with appropriate strings, a little 17" guitalele, because of its little body, won't sound very good in E...
I like my GL1 in G# or A with Aquila 96c or Savarez Alliance Cantiga. And you, what strings do you like for tunings, let's say between G and A?
I particullary use Aquila 96C in my guitalele, so this is my choice for G/A tuning.
Vish já mandou um Faroeste pra começar 🤟🏼👊🏼✌🏼🤩😎
É isso aí! Valeu!
Can I ask you a question? A Guitarlele baritone is tuned EADGBE ok? with its appropiate strings of course. Question: Can I use ADGCEA Strings to convert the baritone guitalele in a tenor? Thanks
I mean, use the first 5 strings from up to down and add an A string in the 6th ?
This is because I´d like to have an ADGCEA tuning in a bigger body
i got a banjolele off amazon. it had metal strings. if tuned to standard guitar it sounded terrible and tension was loose. tuned to tenor uke and it put a ton of pressure on it and pushed the face of the banjo in way too much. i just picked up guitarlele strings to try on it
Can you tell me the brand and model of the banjolele? May I can help you to find a good way to string it.
Hello, can I use carbon instead of nylon strings?
I didn't get a solution with fluorocarbon. The problem is with 5th and 6th string, I coundn't find another solution than the wounded strings from the nylon set.
Can strings of 49-52 cm works well on the GL1?
Yes,but I suggest using low tension strings because the gl1 doesn't have a truss rod
Afinação do violão ou guitarra é EADGBE, não EADBGE, como no título do vídeo. Acho que saiu errado aí.
Mistyping! Thank you!
Are the finger placements then the same as with a guitar?
Yes, if you properly set the tuning, the finger placements will be the same as the standard guitar.
Thank you. 🎶
What about if I want a d standar tuning ?
I don't have a clue, really. I'm sorry but I haven't test this tuning on guitalele.
taí um instrumento que eu quero arriscar um dia. mas antes virá um Ubass.
Uhuullll can't wait to see and listen to it!!
