  • Looking to add an embellishment that catch people's attention? Watch this overview on sewing with electroluminescent (EL) wire that can be added to any project and lit up with regular batteries.
    NOTE:
The wire is fairly stiff, so it will not drape like loose fabric. The glow will not be seen in the daylight or when the lights are on indoors, it needs to be in low light to see the glow.

Interesting. I've been playing with EL wire for years now. Use it to light up my PC desk and other furniture. Given its not incredibly flexible I wondered about attaching it to material.
Now I've watched this I've got 6 meters in 3 colours to use up. I'm gonna make my backpack light up. Will be very handy on those winter walks home in the dark.

Has the EL wire held up well?

@@mariacurb574 yeah it's still going strong. 2 colours on my bag. White one along the outer edge of the bag and a red one along the inner. Looks great. Had a number of people request I do some for their bags too. Made about 8 of them now.

So I've been making warm winter coats, light spring jackets and rain coats for my chihuahua (mostly based on Prof. P's doggie coat). I have been sewing on reflective tape and reflective glass-beaded cord to increase his visibility in the pre-dawn and late evening hour walks. This looks like an excellent upgrade. Since this EL cannot go through the wash - I think that I'll attach some clear vinyl loops every few inches. I could then thread the EL through those loops when needed and remove the EL easily when my dog's coat is ready to launder. This could also make for an easy adaptation for a running suit/sweat jacket or for cycling clothes where visibility is very important. It would allow the EL to be installed or removed easily and quickly so that the garment could be fully laundered without worry. Depending on the thickness of the vinyl - we might need to poke a couple of starter holes through the plastic to make passing a needle through with ease.
Cheers to Prof. P! What a great Idea!

The EL wire does make a high pitch buzzing noise. I am someone who uses if for a range of project including on RC cars. The black battery box makes a buzzing noise which get louder depending on the length of wire attached. This would not bother most people but if you use it near dogs I will suggest you look it up just in case the High Pitch noise bugs them. Not sure if it does or not. The wire is silent but the box makes the sound. I also notices how some boxes are naturally louder than others.

@@staticbuilds7613 Thanks for sharing this insight. I'm just getting ready for the 2021-2022 winter coat season makes so I'll give it a test. I was hoping that the dogs would carry their own battery pack - so I'll consider some high-density insulation around the pack, or perhaps a way to attach the pack to the leash/lead.
      Cheers!

Thanks for the tutorial but I want to know how to cover the seams with a cotton tape.

Great video! Do you have any suggestions on how to attach the wire so that it can be easily removed for washing the garment?

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't done it yet but I was thinking of some tubing or folding over some vinyl (clear) material and sewing it on with enough space to slide the el wire in and pull it out when its time to wash
