The Series XJ was unquestionably one of Jaguar’s best cars, rationalising its complex executive saloon range of the mid-1960s (Mk2, S-Type, 420G, 420/Mk10, plus Daimler 250 among others…) and competing with the best luxury cars in the world. The combination of understated beauty, a fantastic ride, upmarket interior and strong performance from the XK six-cylinder and V12 engines was arguably best realised in the Series 3 XJ, the Pininfarina-designed facelift of 1979. These days it’s a must-have classic Jaguar icon and Joe took a luxurious Daimler 4.2 for a drive to explain why we love it so much!

😀😅 One of the nicest Jaguar body shapes they ever built. Made back in the day when cars were still beautiful to look at from any angle. A most unusual colour for this example, but i like it !.......................😊
The XJ6 is the most beautiful saloon car ever made. Name a saloon car which is more beautiful? I cannot think of one. In terms of British competition, only the Rover P6B 3500/3500S came remotely close to the XJ6. The XJ6 oozes class, it's a proper prestige car- not like the soulless, plastic, sensor laden rubbish built today.
They're beautiful. They bring a lump,to my throat
P5 Coupé
My grandfather had two. My earliest motoring memory is whistling along at 110mph down the Gloucester bypass, aged about six 😀
Very engaging video. I have an 85 XJ, my wife an 85, my son an 86, and my daughter an 84. A wonderful car and a very fine video. Thank you for producing it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely Jaguar in a endearing colour. Driving an old Jag always puts a smile on your face.
Couldn't agree more!
...and on the shop owner's face.
My grandad had a 1975 Daimler Double Six in turquoise with cream leather. I absolutely loved that car as a kid. When he passed away it was given to my uncle and horror of horrors he part exchanged it for a New Vauxhall Corsa around 2002😮
Sir William Lyons had an eye for beauty. No other car designer has such a great portfolio: the SS pre-war cars, XK120, Mark v, Vii and Ix, Mark II and XJ. What a run of achingly beautiful cars.❤
A Series 3 Daimler Double 6 is the best car I have ever driven. The father of an old girlfriend from the early 80's had a brand new one. One night he asked me to drive him and his wife to a party they were attending. I thought that he meant in my Mk2 Escort, until he gave me the key to the Daimler. The next day he asked me how fast I'd driven on the way back. I won't tell you, but I did tell him (minus 10mph). He just laughed and said "yeah of course you did!" I love Series 3s!!!
I love it! I have a 1971 XJ6 4.2 that’s well below A1 condition but makes me feel like king of the road… when it works 😂
I know that feeling my friend. I got a 1996 xj6 with some lovely electrical gremlins. She still looks good tho!
Dad had the same model in 1986 in a dark grey. Brilliant car.
I had a 1985 Jaguar XJ6 3.4 Antelope, cloth interior carburettor and won several trophies including car of the day concours at Broadland Jaguar Club
Fantastic colour too
I don't own a car but for decades I have adored Jaguars. To my eye they are the most beautiful of cars. If I was an owner I would have to forgive any technical shortcomings. Meanwhile, I admire them at every opportunity.
Even the original XJ (especially with the series 2 facelift) still looks beautiful today. A truly timeless visual design. It's actually only the interior that dates them, and not the exterior styling! And that Jag smell is something you have to know to "know."
Had a series 2 many years ago. Still love the looks.....want another one now 😂
I've had about a dozen old Jags. I've never had a truly bad one, although admittedly, not everything works all of the time. My favourite was a B reg 4.2 Sovereign finished in Silversand. Currently driving a X300, which is probably the most reliable Jag, but misses some of the charms of the Series 3 cars.
Had one new. Loved it.
A blue 1986 Jaguar XJ6 was my first car. I learned to drive in my Dads Vanden Plas. It was a love/hate relationship. It had all the power a teenager could want and gas was cheap enough to fill both tanks back then. It was constantly in the shop. I was way too hard on it being a teenager and ended up running it into a stop sign going 80mph.
I have a series 3 Sovereign V12. It was my Uncle’s company car when we worked together. He steadfastly refused to change it for an X308 XJR, despite many offers on my part. He passed ten years ago and I still have the car. It is SO special I just can’t get rid of it.
I had one and will buy another if I find low mileage and good condition. It's my favorite jag of all time!
Same here.
Had a series3 4.2 grey with grey leather interior, magnificent. Now my second 2003 3.0 V6 sport with cranberry red interior and still in love. Not so much with my x type but my series3 v12 5.3 was the ultimate luxury. The V6 sport does nicely now
If we take the XJ13 out of the equation then this could be my most favourite Jag of all. If I had that imaginary £100,000 for an executive saloon, I'd buy a decent Double Six and then give it to someone like Eagle to iron out all the inconsistencies and to bring it more into the 21st century. I like the X308 but this model - this is the one imho. In this Cashmere Gold please...
These really do feel so special, I'm biased towards the 5th gen XJ but the series 3 are infinitely more charming and have a greater sense of occasion about them.
My favourite classic XJ. I have had one for the past 6 years and I love it! used to daily it before I got my XJR.
Well, thanks for this video. I am over 60 and still love this car. I fell in love with this car when I was about 5 years old and still loving. And as you know in real love there are usually no reasons. I would like to have some of them one day, but maybe series 1. But it really doesn´t matter which one will it be.
I'm currently driving an xj308, as it is the last of the xj series.
Series 3 is my ultimate dream car, although flawed in many ways, the ride is up there with the best.
One of my friends has about 6 jags from mk2's to xjs' and a few Daimler models as well, he used to make his own wiring harnesses and upgrade electrical components, as a living he made a fortune then retired from it 😄
As an aside, I think some people are struck with a fondness of these from a certain whitesnake video....... 😄
Beautiful car.....beautiful girl ❤
Great Video ....thanks David and Whitesnake😂
My Double six is the same colour , fresh from Japan 2 years ago with 20 k on the clock , and following my disastrous affair with two 7 series BMW's I wisely went back to a series 3 and have not regretted it once . The ride and quality of the car is only something BMW engineers could only dream of and the Daimler is reliable as the sunrise . No electronic gremlins , suspension groans and bumps that beset the BMW and its a car that other motorists give way to . .
The handmade feel and look is what I love about British cars.
In 1994 I was in the market for one of these, I was looking for a 1987 specifically. Didn't find one but did buy a 1984 XJ-S. These chassis are wonderful things, soak up all the bumps but still capable of a good pace. I kept the XJ-S for two years, I paid $7,500 for it, sold it for $7,250, having only done tires and oil changes, it was an excellent car. After a long break from Jaguars I now have a 2016 F-Type 3.0 S manual transmission coupe, a different class of car but one that feels special in its own way. I won't be driving it again until late April, I live in New Hampshire, USA, the roads are salted here, the car has never seen salt and it won't as long as I have it.
A few months ago I started looking for another XJ6 Series 3, found a nice one, appeared pretty much rust free, asking price was $24,000 though. Then I started looking at 2006-2009 XJ8s, similar styling and ethos but modern technology. Long story short(er), a 2006 XJ8 VDP is being delivered today, black cherry over black, 80,000 miles, just got a new headliner, riding on coil-overs. Buying a Jaguar, or any used car, is always a gamble, time will tell.
If you’ve ever driven one you’ll know why they’re fondly remembered.
Absolutely Superb Design I've never driven much since that came close.
Good review, I've been a huge fan of this car ever since I seen 1 featured as Mccalls personal vehicle in the original equalizer tv series.
I remembered my dad had an XJ6 4.2 with no seatbelts in the back and a really thicc bumper. Damn thing was built as a tank.
Really regret that I never got to drive it as I only got my license a couple months after he sold it off 😭
A lovely car indeed, manufactured around the time that Jaguar Cars Ltd were floated out of BL. Great video and carJoe, thanks.
I had a sovereign the same colour as this one, absolutely loved it, wish I still had it
There is a carriage from around the same period which was as much as to look at as it was a joy to drive. So joyous was this driving the said carriage was compared not only to the XJ6 but also to the CX. It's too much to ask, but one would like to enjoy the pleasure of seeing this channel give the Peugeot 6O4 an assessment. Merry Christ-mas.
Beatifull car! One thing in my bucket list is to buy Series 3 Jaguar one day.
I love it I was lucky when I was a kid my dad one silver frost in colour if only you could keep them all.
We'd certainly keep one!
Fantastic looking car which steel drives well today. Just let down by a less than brilliant 3 speed auto box. Would love to try a manual version of one of these.
This car is a classic. Is one of my dream car.
The Daimler double six vandenplas was the top of the range
I look at all the modern 'pace' junk, rattling diesels, SUV's and the XE/XF nonentities and shake my head. How did they ruin Jaguar so comprehensively? The old XJ was such a 'personal' car, so pretty and so ridiculously inexpensive when new. Back in the seventies and eighties I wouldn't even have considered a Mercedes or BMW over a Jaguar. You knew the reliability was a bit suspect....but.......just look at it. The later injection 4.2 was such a good engine as well.
I truly wished that I could get a full set of the Daimler chrome moulding
strips that run down the side of the car my 1985 XJ6
Good review, great car. Enjoyed watching it! Thumb up!
Thanks a lot!
@@ClassicsWorldUK Really, I am crazy fond of an old XJ style and all its variations. I've even replaced my X-type's grille with a chrome one to make it look more old-time, more classic.
Car styling was pretty good Engines gearboxes and body were terrible however the seats were reasonable.and youve kept that one looking nice
Engines gearboxes and body terrible, lmao, the engines had a fantastic life span from the forties to the 90s,gearboxes are borgwarner which were very good for the day and bodies which alltho rot prone had immense strength and in all honesty most cars rot if neglected.there was no smoother or quieter car in existence than these and they allso handled well to.
I have several other model jags, someday I would like to add a series 3 xj6
When the Series 4 Jaguar XJ cars came out (XJ40) in late 1986 with straighter lines than the series 3. the biggest engine models 5.3 Jaguar XJ12 and Daimler Double Six continued in the shape of the Series 3 until 1993 because the engine would not fit under the bonnet of the Series 4.
For my money the most beautiful 4 door saloon ever made - closely followed by the Alfa 156
Another good video 🚗🚙🚘👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very nice car and great video! Only downside is that nearly all the attention in the classic car world is given to the Series 3, but barely any to the XJ40.
Funny you should say that... stay tuned for this Wednesday's video 👀
@@ClassicsWorldUK Great news! Mine is a 1991 Sovereign XJ40, in the same color as the one in this video, with the famous/infamous rectangular headlights.
Good channel
Please do a review on the MGR Rover 75 or the MG ZT.
You will be pleasantly surprised how they ride.
Defo future classics in the making 👌
R75 review coming soon!
I think a Jaguar XJ12 with double six refinements would be ultimate all rounder because I prefer the plainer front grille. Maybe fit a 6.0 as well perhaps.
I love these cars heyssh
Series 1 XJ is the best, followed by the Series 2 and then 3 in my opinion. I own a Series 2 and an XJ8 currently.
Very smart car 👍😁
You have to have driven one to know why they’re fondly remembered.
Lol - I have a 3.0 litre XF and it's beautiful from ANY angle as is the XJ
The old S1/2/3 were superb and the new XF and XJs are just as beautiful - I NEVER TIRE OF SAYING JAAAAAAG WHEN SOMEONE ASKS ME WHAT I DRIVE.
Totally agree, why buy something boring and reliable like a merc. If you want reliability, buy something new. A classic needs quirks, that’s what makes them so much more special to drive than a modern car. That jag has quirks all over.
At least it actually LOOKS like a Jag UNLIKE modern ones!!!!!!!!!!!
Why do people say it was outdated?
Still think its the best looking car ever made.
love that car but with the manual gearbox... much better, overall
Can't beat a Jag
These dutchess's are beautiful. I wish i could save more of them. Its a crime not to fix them.
A series 3 jag ran for virtually the same amount of time as a Mercedes w126 and the E 23 from BMW ran for nearly 12 years as well. Not that unusual for a the time .
Lost its twin tanks at that point 😢
These Jag's don't like rain.....
I use to own one of these, in white unfortunately it wasn’t very reliable. Had a fuel leak in the engine. It caught fire and written off. Never bought a jaguar again.
Still a beautiful car and much better than that usless berc
Looks a bit rough... :(
As much as I like the old w126 Merc it looks bland as hell after the Jag!
4:01 just as well you didn't drive aggressively as just seconds later you could have been wearing the two runners on the wrong side of the road for a hat!
As ever, the Italians came to the rescue of a flawed British design - think BMC Farinas and Micholetti Triumphs. Was it’s successor the XJ40 better? I don’t think so.
I had this car in Fern Green....it def helped me get a lot of hot chicks back in the day. Thank you Jaguar.
I had an XJ8….beautiful engine and drivetrain. Interior was cheaply made. The back seat was cramped. I did love the car but went back to Mercedes Benz.
Although beautiful, the series 3 was let down by cheap looking trim and plastic badges. The series 1 and 2 look much classier, in fact the series 2 SWB is probably the best looking of the bunch.
The Series 3 changes aren't for everyone!
Proper Jaguar,unlike todays dross....
Large Car Unit of British Leyland, later BL. Looked good, knew a chap who had one. Like all British engineering of the time, unreliable and became dated despited looking good. Like rest of British car and motorbike industry, blown away by Germans and Japanese
Not much crome on that car only stainless
You infer Mercedes were more reliable ? hahahahaha
