  • We've all heard the phrase "nothing more expensive than a cheap luxury car", but is that really true?
    After a full year of having our 1985 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 Sovereign on the road, we add up the costs.

    Good on you for proving that buying the right car, with a good service history, and driving it daily, can be a perfectly successful and pleasurable endeavour. I gave my parents my 1986 Daimler 4.2 seventeen years ago, and the car now has 227,000 miles and is running sweetly.

    Interesting video . Let me point out that the expression is "Nothing so expensive as a cheap Mercedes" as anybody buying a cheap 220se from the 60's will confirm . My car is now exactly 12 months in my ownership and it is a Series 3 V12 Daimler with just 25k on the clock and was used in Japan . I had to do a service and a cam gasket to stop an oil leak but in the 12 months of everyday driving , it has cost me nothing but fuel at 20mpg . It is still as new inside , bodywork is blemish free and its special Dayton chrome wire wheels are stunning . People think I have won the lottery when I turn up in it and on one occasion when we visited a National trust stately home , they guided us to the main front doors instead of the public car park as they thought we owned the place !! I picked my Daimler up for just £11,000 all import costs paid and I note there are a few of these series 3's on sale , all low mileage from Japan . The only draw back is the service history is in Japanese , and the speedometer is in KPH . But if you want to experience the magic of a virtualy brand new series 3 , with the doeskin interior in factory fresh condition, The Japanese imported cars are the way to go .

    You can't beat on old Jag for cheap luxury. I daily drive my 2007 XK 4.2 V8 and it's been very reliable. It had taken us all over the UK and to Europe with no major problems at all and in such comfort!

    Lovely choice sir .... huge Jag fan myself and daily drive a S-Type 2.5 v6 Sport for a few years. It’s been in the blood since I was born as dad was a Jaguar specialist mechanic at Wesley Turkington in Lurgan for many years.

    I drove an xj40 just last week. I love it. I couldn't believe the car was built in 1990. It handled amazingly well. It had been more than 20 years since I drove a Jaguar. It was really nice.

    There is nothing so expensive in the car world as being in a hurry. The faster you want something to happen, the more it costs. And any car is something of a lottery. If you get a good one, you're good. If you get a poor one, you'll be poor. Getting one with a meticulous service history is a great idea. Especially if it is a one or two owner car. And it is a Jaguar, so listen to the car, pay attention to it. When it sounds different or drives different, stop and figure out why. Whatever it is, even if it is expensive to fix, it will be a lot cheaper now than if you wait.

    Brilliant car. I've got a 4 litre XJ40 XJ6 myself. I've also got a V6 X Type. Nice to see an EH Staffordshire reg no. On it too. Serviced at Evans Halshaw, sadly no longer there anymore. Absolutely love Jags.

    If you got as low as 8 mpg you want to check your fuel system. Mine I found out had been drawing petrol from one tank whilst returning to the other! causing it to overflow and dump fuel all over the road. The result was comically low fuel economy. I seen realised why soon after when I was flashed down for spewing petrol all over the road - haha

      Funny we had that exact problem when we drove it home when we first bought it hahah! But no, it’s quite easy to get it that low when you’re smoking the back tyres ;)

      A common problem due to the fuel tank switchover valve (intermittently) getting stuck. Had the same problem on my 1987 xj12

    Good video. I had the same Jaguar XJ6 4.2 in metallic bleu, same year. Bought it second hand and drove it for 3 years and had zero costs on it. It was the best car I ever had ! It was a lot better than my Triumph Red TR6 injection .

    You did well. Just got to keep on top of the rust and keep the fluids fresh. They're mechanically solid if looked after, it's the rot that gets them. Grease is your friend.
    I have a V12 XJS. It's great for the environments where it's happy, but you don't want to daily one of those. They are a bastard to drive in town because you sit so low and far back which makes a lot of junctions blind, as well as having the turning circle of the evergiven and the thirst of Concorde. Better off with the XJ6 for frequent use.

    Great result! I had the exact same spec and colour Jaguar Sovereign in the early 90s as my main car. Mine was very reliable too - only thing that gave trouble was the aircon, which luckily was fixed under warranty. XJ6 is one of my favourite cars - the Series 1 is even better!

    Bought my 2000 E55 AMG estate for just under 4 grand and have been daily driving it (1000 miles a month) for a little over three years, other than fuel and tyres its only needed a CPS, plugs and leads. Mine is high mileage, its just clocked over 250,000 miles but for the first 16 years of it's life it was one owner and came with a full main dealer history so it's been looked after even though it looks tatty now. Luxo barges can be a good choice if you get the right one, mine is practical and fun, no-one expects a 20 year old estate car to have a sub 6 second 0-60. ;).

      @@427Motorsports It's averaging 21mpg and a set of rear tyres every year i should have mentioned but I don't drive it gently so that's mostly my fault.

    Great video and great story. We have a '87 XJ6 Series 3...bought it years ago. Have had some repairs but its still a bargain and it runs great. It has about 175,000 miles on it and doesn't leak much oil. Had starter issues this past month but its just a fun car to drive and take care of. And I drove it 3,972 miles last year. I try to put at least 300 miles per month on it. I liked the video and I will follow you on Instagram. Thanks again. Look forward to watching more of you videos.     Don’t take me wrong I love my Jaguar I’ve got a 98 XJ8 and that it’s cost me far more I paid $5300 . I had to replace front dampener bushings and rear dampener bushings and I had to get the AC system charged

    Beautiful car. I have a 1987 xj12 which I bought for 9000€ with a good service history. No rust. Replaced the injector hoses and coolant hoses preventively as these were more than 30 years old. It has proven to be reliable.

      That’s awesome Bill - we’d love a 12. Although whether or not we could afford the difference in fuel is another thing 😂 Good call on the hoses and things though - far too many neglect this and then it’s the end of a classic :(

    I had a1985 sovereign and had a problem with tappet guides rising up from the head and hitting the cam shift breaking them up.I found much later you can get a hold down kit for this problem

    That’s some extremely affordable classic car ownership! I had a sweaty gasket on my Alfa 156 GTA that was getting a bit too sweaty to my taste - that cost about as much as your entire car and maintenance.

    I ve had 2 s3 4.2's ...one manual and one auto paid £425 for the auto back in 2003, kept that 9mths sold it for £700, and the manual (proper drivers car that one) £450 back in 2005 kept that for nearly 3 years but g/box blew as I didn't service it (no oil) had it re built was never the same got £900 for that one both were daily and reliable drivers , thanks for sharing

      @@427Motorsports I know wish I'd had the space to keep them all , I had a Daimler sovereign 420 1967 , sold it for £5800 back in 2007 , was advertised for £13000 a few weeks later ! ...yes could of been a nice little earner stored and kept in good condition

    Nice I got myself a 1995 xj6 and I love it, I got mine for free and the only things I’ve fixed so far is the Egr valve replacement and while I was under there I got some family to help me replace the spark plugs and the ignition coils. She runs better than my neighbors 2011 bmw 🤣 and next on my list is the ac compressor

    I drive EV daily but I want a hobby car, strictly 78 xj with automatic transmission and 4.2. I rely on my electric, welding/3d cad design and print skills :)

    Great video. I've got an 86 XJ6 Sovereign. I love it. I still have to fix the parking break and had to replace a lot of the fuel system (fuel tanks, pump, and valves). I'm in the middle of changing out the fuel injection system to triple SU carb set up; I grew up with old English cars, and I prefer antiquated carbs to an antiquated fuel injection system.

      Unfortunately we had to sell this due to covid and it upsets us every day. We'd buy it back in a heartbeat if we could. It was a fantastic car that never let us down.

    I have a clean, garage-kept '84 with 70K on it, but unfortunately it's been sitting in the same spot in my shop that I parked it in ten years ago. It ran fine and everything worked, I was 'just' going to replace all the suspension rubber and do a 60K service on it. Umm, maybe tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow.

    They did a 3.4 Series III as well. I know because I had one 30 years ago ;-) You did well to get that for £1500, I paid a grand for mine when it was 11 years old & not in the best of health. In fact yours looks in better nick than the one I had lol.

      @@427Motorsports good point, no I don't think the 3.4 was available as a Sovereign. It was a '79 so one of the first Series III. It also must've been a poverty spec one as it had cloth seats lol. But I was 23 at the time & loved it :-)

    Lucky man! I have seen series on YT about this with endless problems. Severe problems (head gaskets, cracked heads, etc.).

      The most important thing to look after at a Jaguar are the cooling system. Flush it and replace the cooling floid each year if you want to avoid cracked or warped heads.

    i have an 82 xj6, but i just couldnt drive it daily, not because of cost or practicality. I just dont want to deal with all the rust issues that would be inevitable. If you like the xj and want it too last...well i think your brave anyway

    If you are thinking about buying a Jaguar as a luxury car be careful what you buy. First of all ask yourself what is a luxury car. Not all people think a V6, V8 and especially a V12 models are what makes a luxury car. Some people might however have the extra money to buy one of these faster models, and even maintain one, but if you are really looking for the best value for money, then make a fool of your self and pay top dollar for the most practical model with good history. The models which will have the straight 6 engine. The series 3 has a terrific rear end but changing the disc rotors might be harder than you think. The XJ40 & X300 have a simpler rear end. The sports and R models in the X300 range will have a much firmer ride, and if they are a super charged model, then they will be more expensive and difficult to work on. My very first car was a Jaguar in the 70's and I love them but so many guys in my life time I have come across who buy them, often finish up giving up on them, because they bite off more than they can chew. If speed and performance is your priority then that is the car for you. But if it is true luxury, comfort and value for money then be careful which model you go for. I have owned a X300 for about 7 years and it is true luxury, and is a gem of a car. But I paid about twice the price of the usual bargain prices, and egnored all the other faster and more popular sports models, to get a good car with full log books and very low milage. This car will way out live me and will never have rust problems because of it's past, and the climate it is used and maintained in. The best bargain Jaguar cars I have owned, have been then ones I paid the most for, and the ones that had a very good history. Good luck. And If you get a good one you will never look back.

    IMHO, you should not include the purchase cost of the car,that should be amortised over the period you own it, however, you should include the cost of fuel. So how much was that?

      This was to be the first year, we included the grand total just to let people know what the whole thing cost. To be honest with you I didn't know if I'd be keeping it for a full year when I first got it... so I never kept track of fuel.
      However, I was able to hit as high as 25+MPG on a run, and realistically fuel costs come down to whoever is driving it.

      To be fair, on almost any new car, the depreciation is the largest cost per year. a new 3 series may cost £35,000 now but in a year it’ll have lost £6-7k. Even including excessive fuel costs and questionable reliability, your still better off with something old and interesting 👍

    Tyres, Batteries ,Registration,Insurance Oil , Fuel ,servicing ect is a cost on any car. Luxury or not. Don’t let a car lay around unused….it’s really bad for the car, then buys one that sat for 16 years with hardly any issues. 🤔

    At least fix the exhaust and then you have the cost for one year.
    When you show heaps of history, you can tally all that up and tell us exactly what it has co$t, because some is routine service and others are repairs. Or go the whole hog and let us know what 'getting it up to scratch means', what else isn't working but still driveable.
    Seems it was garaged before, so the only rust when you got it was from wet shoes on floor inside. Now it's getting parked outside, you can report in ten years the cost of full bodywork on those things.

      The exhaust was fixed, £40.
      That history is from two owners since 1985. This video is talking about since I have owned it. Yes it was looked after, but, this video is about buying a cheap luxury car. This car would not have been cheap during their ownership - it had only now depreciated to the point of cheap.
      Up to scratch just meant those things that were fixed and mentioned in the video, and cleaning it - literally nothing else had to be done. Everything works.
      If nobody has swapped it for an XJS by then, we’ll come back in 10 years, and hopefully it’ll be the same story!

If it's only about reliability, I have a Mitsubishi 4x4 I've put 385'000 km on with nothing failing yet except an oil pressure sensor. Hope u get many more miles from the Jag or get your dream xjs
