    love this breed sm! we just lost our beloved tri-color daisy last month. which is why i’m commenting here. something that gets over looked A LOT with cavalier king charles is their HEARTS. almost every king charles cavalier gets englarged hearts around the age of 7 and it comes with a diagnosis which i honestly can’t remember the name of. the hear basically expands and takes up space from their lungs and over all messes with their bodies. most cavaliers age ranges are 8-11. to treat their condition properly costs THOUSANDS of dollars and it doesn’t over all fix anything. it just kind of controls the situation. 90% of cavaliers pass from their heart issue, which is what happened to our sweet baby. eventually the heart gets so enlarged and swollen the body just can’t take it anymore. it’s a miserable way to go but it’s just part of the breed.
    one thing i say before i go, I. AM. NOT. A. VET. when we got daisy i learned SO MUCH about the breed. i went to every vet appointment and was genuinely interested in the breed history and all.

The dog also loves seeing me so much that the owner has told me she freaks out the most when seeing me and no one else. Hell she so smart she recognizes my car when I pull over to say hi to them when they’re on a walk.

    • @ShieniLicksOnLemons
      @ShieniLicksOnLemons Před 10 měsíci +203

      Thank you, came to see if anyone has mentioned this.
      To elaborate on the brain problems: their heads are too small for their brains causing their brains to constantly push against the inside of the skull and into the brainstem, into the spinal cord. There's a good chance they suffer from eternal, excrutiating headaches as a result of this, since humans experience that from basically anything that disrupts the flow of cerebrospinal fluids, for example epidurals. So this breed is one of those extremely unethical breeds, and if you just "have to" get one you should at the very least try to find a breeder who has focused on breeding healthier individuals.

    My parents adopted one. Those extremely short snouts are a dentition nightmare caused by selective breeding for esthetic over health. My parents resued one from a shelter and quickly learned in the time between her donation and adoption, she developed a cavity. Their front teeth are so close together that this occurs easily and will have a domino effect with the plaque spreading down the line. My parents had to pay several thousand dollars to have most of the dogs lower front teeth removed. After several years she started to have nuerological problems that we learned were apparently common for this breed, again for the poor genetics. She would get very confused and have repeated sezuires. In the last couple years of her life she would just let poop fall out no matter where she was and even lay right down in it. She would also run repeated clockwise circles until she collasp3d in exhaustion. We were told thsi was likly due to a Brian timer or other nuerolgical defect causing her to feel the urge to do this without end. She would not move out of the way of people or objects and would often run right into a person's path as they came though or come up right on their heels so they couldn't back up. It was a serious nightmare because the dog was a hazard for itself and a serious danger for my mom with her arthritis and back issues. My dad did not want to put it down but it was clearly not enjoying a good quality of life and it was finally agreed it had to be done. I am not saying they are all a bad choice of dog but I feel from what we learned from the vet over time, they are not the general perfect dog for everyone that this video makes them out yo be. They can be very expensive and can be a puppy mill dog. They also have poor genetics as a result of the breeding to make them, which results in health concerns not everyone is able to care for. I agree it is important not to discourage people from adopting in general but responsible adoption is just as important. The orgional owner of Mt pare rs dog could not handle her. She was lucky my parents came along, but even then, it was really rough and too late in some cases. Her cavities formed in just a couple months of lesser care and resulted in only two front teeth remaining in her lower jaw. Please make sure the breed you adopt is right for you in the long term and not just as a puppy. Do diligent research on their health and life needs so you can appropriately decide if you can reasonably handle it with your current life expectations.

      Thank you for sharing your story. It is important to inform people what they could be getting themselves in for so we have less people blindly buying a cute puppy from a breeder only for it to end up in a shelter when the dog's medical needs exceed what they expected.

      I generally would say no one should get one of these dogs, their neurological issues are caused by the selective breeding making their heads too small for their brains, so they're just generally a very unethical breed of dog imo. So if someone just "has to" get one of these they should at least find a breeder who has focused on breeding healthier individuals. They also have a ton of genetic heart problems.

      As a vet tech, I agree with all you said. Sadly, this breed is also prone to heart problems as well. However, at the clinic, they are the sweetest dogs to work with and I never met a nasty behaved one in all my 30 years of clinical experience.

    • @kytestar
      @kytestar Před 9 měsíci

      @@ShieniLicksOnLemons You are completely incorrect regarding selective breeding as this is not the issue with Cavaliers. It was due to how they were initially bred. A gentleman called "Eldridge" wanted a Cavalier in 1926 and set up a challenge for breeders to recreate the traditional Cavalier which was around during the reign of King Charles II (current English Cavaliers had longer noses). The Cavalier was "recreated" but during World War II and extreme rationing in the UK, only around 50 of these newly created breed survived... and all the cavaliers since then have been bred from those surviving 50. So it's not selective breeding and any reputable Cavalier breeder would do anything to have a healthy litter, but that just is currently not the case until the defects are bred out (but bad breeders will continue to ignore the dogs welfare and think about money).

    • @ShieniLicksOnLemons
      @ShieniLicksOnLemons Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@kytestar........ It would be so easy to breed them out if people truly wanted to, and selective breeding has been there the whole time as well even if the "options" were limited. They could've just bred the dogs with other similar breeds, they SELECTED to inbreed them..........

    Best dog I ever had. She did develop heart problems, but I was aware it could be an issue. I did extensive research and eventually found a very reputable breeder. She had a cardiologist as well as a regular vet. She lived for 10 years with a good quality of life. In the end, she developed a blood clot that took her. She didn't suffer, but I was heartbroken. I still miss her. Her call name was Windy because she constantly wagged her tail.

    These dogs can have constant painful headaches, regular seizures that can leave them disabled and all because they were selectively bread into having a skull too small to fit their brain without putting pressure on it "because small heads look cute".
    Please, if you genuinely want one of these dogs either rescue one from a shelter or do extensive research on a breeder before considering buying from one and be aware this dog could easily cost thousands in vet bills to keep in any quality of life.
    Your safest bet is to find a shelter dog that is not 100% purebread, but still looks like a King Charles Cavilier Spaniel. Then you get the best of both worlds and the dog has much better chance at not living in pain and reaching a long healthy life.

    We love ours. We have a lot of people in our neighborhood who are afraid of dogs, and it is very nice to walk a dog who loves everyone and whose natural response to a screaming child is to lie down calmly and wait patiently.
    That said, he has a real stubborn streak, was incredibly reluctant to be housebroken, and neutering destroyed his amazingly lustrous coat (that’s common with the breed, but most vets don’t know about it). If you want to understand the difference between trainability and intelligence, this is the breed to watch (aww! but true).
    This breed really shines with strangers, as well as with invalids. Bless their sweet hearts.

Breeding them is nothing short of unethical and if you really want to adopt one, you need to be prepared to spend thousands on medical fees. Believe me when I say that as a vet helper assisting a cardiologist, I've never seen a single dog of this breed that had no chronic health issues.

      I'm happy that's the case! You wouldn't believe how many people simply don't do any research at all, it can get really disheartening at times.
      The vet I work with always says "miniature pinschers are commonly seen as the healthiest breed, but that might just be because they're not seen that often" haha. From my own experience though, among the dogs I know that have reached really old age for a dog (16+), most are chihuahuas. Like many small breeds, they might have dental issues or eye problems though. Other smaller breeds that are considered on the healthier side include the Maltese, Bichon Frisé, Yorkshire terrier and beagle.

    Heart problems, fluid on the lungs at later ages, the constant need to groom the ears (like EVERY DAY) as they get food, water and general dirt stuck to the ends of them and most importantly, the CONSTANT snoring/snorting/grunting, it’s like living with a fury pig that suffers from sleep apnea. Other than that, amazing dogs. RIP Oscar the piddy 🐷

      If you do, you absolutely need to properly research what you're getting yourself into with them - medical fees that might easily go into the thousands. These guys are predisposed for all sorts of terrible, chronic health issues, including awful neurological and heart conditions. They're sweet, but breeding them is absolutely unethical and no dog should have to pay such a terrible price just to look cute and have a nice temperament. As a vet helper, I've never met one who was completely healthy.

    Cute. I had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Fox Terrier mix named Namine aka Mama and she lived for like 19 years. She was the best most loyal dog I’ve ever had. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s are a great breed but yes do your research and be aware of the health problems that are common with their breed

    I’ve had several cavis throughout my life and they are super sweet and playful dogs! Unfortunately, they do have several health issues, my last one passed from heart and lung problems. Many breeders who do breed this type of dog, tend to keep them very very pure, which most of the time leads them to inbreed, hence the medical issues. All of mine started developing these things when they were over 10/11 years of age, and sometimes they don’t show at all.
    I love these dogs with all my heart and will probably continue to own them ❤️

    Absolutely wonderful bread. Ours was a great addition to our family. Great with children, people and other dogs. A happy, loving, playful breed. Cons: Needs to be groomed often, which does become costly. Second, common for them to have health issues, which becomes costly.
