- It's no secret that rats love food. Rats are happiest when they're eating and it shows. However, since rats can eat almost anything, what do they like the most? In this video, we're taking a closer look at the food preferences of our favorite rodents.
Back in the 60s, when I was at school, my mom would give our rats a hot lunch before their afternoon nap. They'd grab the spoon she used to put the food into their dish. They loved cheese, had a major sweet "fang", loved to bite into the shell of an almond, and they loved spaghetti strands to "inhale". We used to ask them "Will you be finished snacking by dinnertime?" Loved this video. Thank you so much ❤😋

Just be careful about how much protein you feed your rat at a time. To much protein can lead to flaky and itchy skin

They can eat beans and rice. Imagine thinking a rat is more important than birds, pigs and cows. If need to cook, they don't need it
One food my rats were obsessed with was rice pudding. When I rescued my first rat, and I thought she was a male, she wasn't eating anything I gave her. So I raided my fridge for just ANYTHING to get her to eat. She went nuts over the rice pudding...and then gave birth to seven babies three days later, which is how I found out she was a female.

My rats definitely love sunflower seeds a lot. It's funny watching my five girls all crack them open with precision and extract the seeds and lick the shell, then calmy dispose it and get another. They'll chomp in unison until they're all gone every time I give them a bowl of them.
My rat's favourites were banana, apples, and noodles. They hated cheese, and only one understood what a seed was and how to open it xD

My boys are crazy about pure meat baby food, both chicken and beef. It's lean, organic meat, so it's not only a healthy occasional treat, but also perfect to give medication. At least the ratties I had so far prefered it over vegetable or fruit puree.

My rats hate eggs with a passion. I got one for them on Easter and one of them ate some and then left it alone. They kicked it around and pushed it through the bars of the cage, which they never did before nor after.

I spread peanut butter on chopped banana pieces and they adored it 🐀❤️
Whenever i have hotdogs or burgers i give them a little piece and some bun to make a mini rat sized hot dog or burger as a lil treat
I'd also give them hard uncooked pasta as they like it and it helps keep their teeth down so they don't overgrow and I didn't have to stress them out by having to trim them with nail clippers. So much better way to keep them trim good old uncooked pasta 😊
My rats love plain, unsweetened coconut yoghurt. I always hide their medicines in it.
Chocolate: Rats LOVE it just as much as we do, but just like us, must be enjoyed in moderation. tl;dr = very, Very, VERY small portions maybe once a week or so, and do make sure to separate them while handing them out in order to avoid fights.
Rats can eat something like 5 x body mass in chocolate before sickness so don’t have to worry to much hunny is what you should never feed them

@@ratladyroch *blink blink* Who told you that? Yer thinking of ACTUAL dogs, not pocket puppies. Rats can and do eat it safely all the time. Again though, you simply need to give it to them in moderation just like all other treats, but ask any vet, they'll tell you it's perfectly safe. I give mine a tiny bit every now and then and have done so with no problem for years.
Unlike yourself, I put in the time and effort into researching this thoroughly online, referring to experts with college degrees on the subject who actually know what they're talking about as opposed to some rando on Tiktok spouting nonsense.

Well, my research says no chocolate, 3 vets and I work at an animal shelter! All if our vets say no chocolate! And I am very knowledgeable about rats. I've had 29 pet rats! Yes, they love it! I gave my first rat chocolate, just a bit! My vet told me I was lucky!
Sanitarium Up & Go, high fibre breakfast drink. Whenever rat needed medicine, mix it with Up & Go on a spoon, and they would guzzle it down medicine and all.

I'm planning on getting some rats in the near future so I am learning all I can before I do. I cannot eat of have gluten in the house, so I have gluten free noodles. How do I know if the things they use in them are ok for the rats to eat? Having a comprehensive list of no-nos would be extremely helpful.

My rats LOVE original whole grain cheerios ❤ I use them as a treat and they always appreciate them. Broccoli and hard boiled eggs make them very happy too. They seem to hate carrots in any form tho 🤭
I'm a biology student and my babies are lab rats I rescued from one of our experiment.
I don't know anything about rats and they don't know anything but the bleak life of the lab, so they're noy really food motivated.
So far the only thing that sparked any kind of interest is bread. And not even regular bread, FOCACCIA...
I feed my rats with full bowl of chopped cooked meat, vegetables, fruits, herbs, seeds and nuts in good proportions so they grow big and strong, but i wouldnt give them pasta sauce or stuff made for humans just for safety

Rats love leftover chicken bones from fried chicken or buffalo wings. They can eat the bones without choking unlike dogs. The seeds from apples won't make them sick. Some flowers will kill them though.

Mine don't like pb, cheese, or pasta. But they love chicken, fresh fruits & veggies, and insects. They go bonkers over dubias & superworms.

I used to treat my ratties to a tub of lucusts from the pet shop. I'd put them in freezer to kill them humanely first then five them to the rats and omg they looovvvveeeedddd them.

They can also go mad for corn cobs, avocado, hemp & pumpkin seeds. Peanuts will be safer than peanut butter & without salt too. So funny to see that fat (pregnant?) little girl superglued to the pot! A shame to see that myth about apple seeds still circulating after so many years. Many of mine have not been keen on apple flesh but they love the seeds which I have given for decades. They are not toxic & many creatures go for them. They contain similar substances to bitter apricot seeds which are a therapeutic health remedy.

peanutbutter is a choking hazard, dont do this, better give it just peanuts.

I would change some of the footage too clarify certain aspects.
do not give your rats marinated meat or other spicy stuff.. they don't even need that much protein.
Cheese is almost only fat! Only give on very rare occasions.
Bananas are very high in sugar. Same goes for apples.
Rats make their own Vitamin c.. they do not need to get it from their food
Give them blueberries.. less sugar, more of the good stuff.. Red grapes are also OK.
Just feed them a good mix of seeds and grains, dried herbs/weeds etc add some fruit, veggies and protein in form of mealworms etc
