Yeah, as the guy at TW puts it, they're the largest wholesaler in the nation and they'll buy such a large amount they get a volume discount and pass along a discount to the consumer with these spirits direct items.

Undisclosed mash bill, but probably a wheater. Dominant cherry taste to me. You are right, not typical bourbon; but not bad.

I was at TW today and picked up the First Call and Macfarlane's Reserve. I was looking for something different but still in the budget category. Finished round 1 of the bottles on every 'Best Budget Bourbon' list. Appreciate your honest and informative reviews of both bottles. As somebody who is a 🏇race fan 365 days a year I could even see keeping this one as a regular in the stable just cuz there's a horsie on the bottle and it is sometimes nice as a mixer (but not for all drinks).
I don't trust my palette much as a sipper, but I did notice some of the notes you mentioned. Some toffee/caramel, vanilla and clove (maybe?) as the spice at the finish. The clove/spice is apparent as a mixer as well with Mtn Dew in a pleasant finish. Not as pleasant in a Bourbon Arnold Palmer where all the flavors collide at the finish and trample over each other in confusion.
Stumbled across your channel because of these 2 Bourbons. As a MN to KY transplant it's nice to see a MN Bourbon channel. I even had a flashback to that blue Buffalo in town. Used to camp and fish up there a bit as a kid.

I'm glad the videos were helpful! That's always nice to hear. And, it's always especially nice to hear from a fellow (even if former) Minnesotan! Cheers!

I picked up a bottle of First Call Cask Strength the other day. It is a better bourbon in my opinion. A bit better balance but that might be because it is a 4 year bourbon + the time it takes to turn the barrel to dump the juice. Great for a mixer but also a solid sipper (especially if it is your second pour after a better bottle of bourbon).

Didn't know there was a cask strength version. We might have to pick one up! Thanks for watching!

I really enjoyed their rye as a mixer. For $22 it was good for sipping. Wish it was stronger though!

The first Call is pretty good for what it is. And yeah, it does come from the same company as McFarlanes so it's probably safe to assume the bourbon is sourced from the same place for both of them.
By the way, the TW spirits direct thing doesn't necessarily reflect cheap off brand knock off bourbons. While there definitely are several of those, most of which you guys tried on your TW flight videos that had like an unknown company and source, but there are many majorly knowns brands that are spirits direct as well. Some examples are anything Iron Root, Still Austin, a few 1792 off shoots, as well as an allocated Sazerac bourbon called Handcock's Reserve that has the same mash bill as Blantons. Spirts direct and even the winery direct thing are for, for the most part, smaller lesser known or up and coming distilleries and wineries or even distiller or winery exclusives from major brands that they will allow to be sold through TW. It's kind of an interesting program.

Every bourbon should be required to make an age statement on either the front or back labeling of the bottle.

I fell for the wine and more salesman but he was a nice older guy. 25 bucks better than Jim and Jack in my opinion.

I think I (Ben) would agree...nothing special but not bad.

TW was sold out of Rittenhouse rye so they recommend First Call Rye. Was disappointed. After watching your video sounds like they push this brand because they’re probably told to and not because it’s good. Going to stick to Rittenhouse or another known brand from now on

Yeah, they really push their "house bourbons ". Some are good, but most aren't.
