All the later drivers, that still were going pretty much full speed, despite yellow being out for some time, deserve to be penalized by the FIA after the race. This easily could've ended in someone dying.
I disagree, not just with the penalty argument but also with the "someone could've died" statement.
1. If caution was properly displayed, why did so many drivers not act accordingly?
2. We've seen MUCH worse crashes from GT3 cars that have not ended in serious injury or death.
@@Maverick9kthere are clear yellow flags shown and they don’t obey them. and the whole “we’ve seen much worse crashes before “ idea is pointless cause all it takes is a small impact at the wrong angle and it can cause serious injury
@@Maverick9k Under double yellows drivers would be getting out of the car, if the car cant move anymore due to damage so they wouldn't be strapped in or worse outside of the car. So yes someone could of died due to driver's incompetence.
@alvinsacic4762 These cars are much safer than the whole "at the right angle argument." The only time I can see drivers getting seriously hurt in these cars would be a direct impact on the drivers side.
But again, if the caution was properly shown, why did SO many drivers not act accordingly?
@IIIErebusIII that has nothing to do with the crash. The driver/s would be getting out of the car a lot later after the crash after the WHOLE field has been slowed down and safety personnel are already at the car.
That's still not a proper answer to my question about the caution being shown properly, though.
Flags? radio? watching the road in front of you? What an odd accident
This is largely down to drivers not being penalized for abusing yellow flags.
Double yellow means you need to be prepared to stop.
In reality its more or less, Lift off the throttle so it shows in the data, then back on it.
I think he was focused on the car in front and wanted to pull out of the slipstream. Still he definetely ignored the yellows.
@@Celciusify everyone forgets that "be prepared to stop" part. I was flagging a club race earlier this year, and the top 6 all went flying by a flipped car and nearly took out the safety vehicle. All six have had there licences revoked FOR THE REST OF 24! Unfortunately money talks and we are only going to see some long stop and hold penalties.
lifetime ban for porsche driver
There were no flags
The stewards need to dish out at least 10 penalties for ignoring double yellows, this is unacceptable.
Totally the speed those last 6 cars came through was ridiculous you can see it was under double yellow very quickly
@damarfadlan9251 I wholeheartedly agree, in such instances, an immediate disqualification should be handed out before the cars even reach the pitlane.
To hell with it, I wouldn't mind a mutliple-race-ban for these drivers. You either follow orders and slow down under double yellow or you have no place on that racetrack.
There were double yellows out, yet a bunch of drivers kept going at race speed. I'm baffled...
Drivers don't respect yellow flags, because they know they won't be penalized, if they just lift the throttle slightly for a few seconds, so there is a visible "dip" in their data. We have had quite a few massive double yellow crashes through the years in all kind of racing series. Even Bianchi in F1, who was one of the fastest drivers through that double yellow zone. It's almost redundant to wave that second yellow flag because it barely has any real effect on the drivers over a single yellow flag. They should be enforced more heavily across all racing series, to make them much more respected.
There was nothing out when he drove in him
@@Histoe 0:47 0:57 ???
Gentlemen drivers...
@@Histoelook at the top left, the digi flags are showing double yellows (2 flashing triangles)
That’s absurd to me that no driver saw that yellow flag sign or that the teams didn’t notify the drivers of a car stopped ahead.
They actually have a large light on their dash that should have flashed yellow as well.
@@kudos_ that’s what I was thinking too. To me, to those who didn’t slow down disobeying yellow flags, should be penalized. Could’ve resulted in very serious injuries.
Everyone ignored the yellow.
This series more pro am than actually pro series. Lol
Did need to see the yellows or be notified, just need to use your eyes to look ahead.
The bins outside the stewards' office should be full of cancelled racing licences but of course that won't happen.
I remember marshalling at a Willhire 24 hour meeting. During the Honda CRX support race there were so many violations only one driver went home with a clean license. Some got points, some were suspended and one driver was chucked out of the championship for putting concrete in his bumper
@@stephenbrown4211they rlly should make it clear here too that smth like this is unacceptable.
@@bioshock9998 would be nice if its not just a recommendation
@@bioshock9998 Rubbish! Yellows mean the same everywhere. Caution, NO overtaking, be prepared to stop. To ignore any of those rules expect a visit to the naughty step. What if marshals were on track dealing with the incident. Would you be salivating hoping they’d get hit?
@@bioshock9998 Wrong! Yellows mean Caution hazard ahead, slow down and be prepared to stop. No overtaking in the hazard zone. Bet you would love it if marshals were on track judging by you definition
Somebody needs to be held accountable, that’s the only way rules and standards change. If someone died here this would be a different conversation. That’s unacceptable ☹️
You must be new to endurance racing. Yellow flags are more of a recommendation/its your own risk in endurance racing. They don’t have to follow them read the rulebook. This is part of the sport
@@bioshock9998 you know absolutely nothing about motor racing do you.
@@bioshock9998 Everyone in this thread missed the rule book including yourself. The yellow flag doesn't "suggest" anything. The yellow flag alerts you to a hazard ahead and the rule (endurance included) is that you cannot attack during a yellow. This doesn't mean you have to stop behind the crashed cars or slow down - it just means you stop racing (FIA releases a PDF for each race). Double flag just means the road is partially blocked which means it's extra important to be ready to get into single file. There is no rule being broken; there is no suggestion being ignored. The cars are all passing around the crashed cars and the one numb nuts tried to zig when he should have zagged. He was nowhere near attacking the car ahead.
First 35 seconds... Well, this isn't very big.
0:35 Hold my beer.
They're treating that yellow flag like we treat yellow traffic lights. It means "speed up" apparently. We usually get similar results.
When you treat a double yellow like it was a mild suggestion, you should not be driving on a professional level.
FFS, I bet you can go to any random Go-Kart track and see the rules get applied more seriously than this.
You must be new to endurance racing. Yellow flags are more of a recommendation/its your own risk in endurance racing. They don’t have to follow them read the rulebook
@@bioshock9998double yellow is the opposite… it has the added meaning of “be prepared to stop if needed”
@@kivori3438ok but is there a clear procedure? Is there an exact speed limit or button on the wheel? No. Racing drivers will not lift unless they absolutely HAVE to, so lifting there would have meant positions lost or time lost to your opponents that don't lift. Imo there should be a clear procedure and strict. Otherwise you can't expect racing drivers that fight for miliseconds per lap to lift at what is considered more of a recomandation than a fcy for example.
And nobody told that driver over radio that there is a car parking in the middle of the track there?
That second set of drivers all need to get sat down with the race director and parked. Double waved yellows mean EXTREME CAUTION! Slow down and be prepared to stop. No one seems to get that last part. There was an incident at Mid Ohio in a club race where a Formula Vee flipped and waved yellows and whites were out the top 6 in another class ignored the yellows and nearly took out the safety vehicle. All of those drivers were not only parked for the weekend, but have had their racing licences revoked for the rest of the season.
These assholes can count themselves lucky they got their licenses back if you ask me.
I'm all in for some hard racing, but when there's a crashed car on track, you slow down.
You must be new to endurance racing. Yellow flags are more of a recommendation/its your own risk in endurance racing. They don’t have to follow them read the rulebook
@@bioshock9998 it's more of an enforcement issue. Same with penalty points in F1. Because it would look so bad if the "best" drivers in the world got a race ban / suspension fpr stupidity...
@@bioshock9998 Feel free to cite a source on that one, cause I think that's bullshit. Yellow flags are to be respected, they are neither a recommendation nor a suggestion, they are to be respected unconditionally.
Here's my source, in case you need it:
FIA World Endurance Racing 2024 Regulations:
"9.1.11 Applicable penalty

So no, flags are not a "recommendation", they are something the drivers have to follow, else they are penalized.
@@h.a.9880 He's copy/pasting this 100% wrong response to everybody. The driver of the #61 car got a penalty for this incident due to not respecting yellow flags.
Double yellow flags: "are we a joke to you??" Baffling
“That is horrendous, absolutely horrendous. So Anyway..”
Not sure that was the most tasteful choice of words to use for this.
Glad everyone is ok!
The way he said "So anyway..." was like an old topgear joke from Clarkson.
Bronze driver momento
I just saw that right in front of me at Spa and it was quite crazy that those cars were not slowing down, and even right after the crash, the safety car and all the following cars passed right through the debris and people working on the scene, seemed very dangerous
And here we are thinking drivers had radios
Now I feel like a professional driving in my simulator.
With circuits like Spa having official timing micro-sectors, the Stewards have access to the data that will prove who did, and didn't slow for that incident.
If I was a race Steward, I would be handing out very big fines AND race licence endorsements for those that ignored the yellow flags.
Sure, they put themselves in danger, but they also put their competitors in SERIOUS DANGER.
They should NOT get to make that CHOICE without SERIOUS consequences.
Bro how many “pro” racedrivers are in that field who’s seat was bought for them rather than earned?? That yellow was out a long time and that reaction made the driver look under influence.
real
More and more every day man.
This is the problem with having too many rich people with nothing to do.
@@stfu6397based yeezus
They simply want to keep the speed up through Eau Rouge to get the speed onto the straight to overtake those who lifted. Very very wrong. But thats what being entitled gets you I guess.
A friend and fellow racing driver died at Sears Point in the same situation - he had spun and engine stalled in the middle of the track in the blind downhill section and the rest of the field ignored the double yellow and someone t-boned him. RIP Tim.
The second part of the accident is horrific. But why the first part of the accident even happened? The driver of the blue/white car was expecting the green car to magicaly dissapear off his side? Wtf!!!

When bronze driver (idk if it was an am, but it looked like one, otherwise can't explain the severe lack of understanding...how atoms can't vanish)
It's racing, this happens in racing from time to time lol
Bizarre incident indeed. I think the drivers probably saw the car on the grass when they exit the hairpin thinking that's what the yellow flag is for and completely ignored the fact that there could be another hazard elsewhere.
good point, that's really plausible
No drivers ever seem to slow for a yellow anymore in any category it's baffling.
Whoever that driver was that hit him should be banned. Completely inexcusable.
imagine if there was some sort of signal to stop this from happening... oh wait
Ignoring the yellow flag has consequences. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.
„Anyway“
The fact that so many cars don’t slow properly implies maybe there’s a sighting problem with the position of the lights/flags? You often see incidents where someone is being oblivious to it, but for so many to go through?
Edit: I wonder if they’re coming through the right kink and their line of sight of the light panel is blocked by the advertising bridge over the track as they head downhill?
They could've still notified them through their radios.
With all the tech available the yellow flag could limit power availability. They will have a big ass flashing yellow light in the cabin, Letting the drivers decide how fast they go though this is crazy
That's really, really poor, seems NOT one driver obeyed the double yellow flags!! 😡🤦
No red flag? Keep pushing 🚗
As a former rescue crew member, The drivers are supposed to react to waved yellow flags. I'm happy to know there was no serious injuries but the rules are clear , slow down , don't carry on as if nothing has happened.
Sometimes I really do wonder about racing drivers. Like... YELLOW FLAGS, people, YELLOW FLAGS! Do you want to die today?
And these are professional drivers??
Not the guy who hit the Ferrari, not that thats an excuse.
Some are amateur pay drivers.
Holy ARCA brakes batman! Good to hear everyone is ok
"Oh, that's horrendous! So, anyway..."
"That is horrendous, absolutely horrendous. So anyway...."
I laughed pretty good there.
Sorry, but this should result in suspensions. Disregarding yellow flags is a massive offense
I didn't know ARCA Brakes were at Spa this weekend...
The final one is ridiculous, full speed not taking any notice. Where was the pit to driver radio warning or even red flag
When I saw the title of this at first I thought it was another crash at Radillon but no it was inches before Eau Rouge
I’m assuming everyone saw the car off the side of the road and thought “that’s the yellow, I’m all good”.
It literally happened 3 minutes after we got of the ferris wheel right next to it... Damn it
I'm not an expert in flag rules in the WEC, but in F1 a double yellow means the driver has to have their time under a set delta imposed by the FIA (also alerts them to get ready to stop on short notice). Failure to do so will result in anything from a drive-thru to a time penalty. If the WEC is the same, there's at least half a dozen cars that'd need somewhere from 20 seconds to a drive-thru
Holy shit, look at the marshalls next to the flames
Yeah...Like at an intersection! Yellow means SPEED UP!!!! Every one of those drivers not slowed should receive a race suspension.
“OOOFFF” I’m sorry I goofed up.
Thanks for posting. Thankfully drivers uninjured. That's why you keep your belts fastened and helmet on until you know it's safe. I agree with other comments - there needs to be a driver's meeting after this fiasco.
Speaking as someone involved in 24 hour racing, and to answer those saying ''how come they didn't... slow down/yellow flags/radio'' etc etc. This looks like it was filmed early in the morning, unless you've been involved in this type of racing you may not know one of the biggest challenges for everyone is 'brain fog'. It's silly o'clock in the morning and many drivers will be on autopilot mentally, still driving OK because of rhythm (which is always strong in 24hr) but ask them even the simplest unrelated question and it'll result in a long thinking time. 24hr's frazzle your brain. Although watching it again, the race has only been on 7 hours, so no excuses really..
A yellow flag is not an unrelated question. I drive many 24h races in the sim and what you say is correct, apart from things on track. Brain fog, maybe - but I prefer to liken it to tunnel vision. But you are completely aware of everything on track, including flags
No It was not "brain fog". It was like, 8-9 o'clock iirc (race started at 4:30), second lap restarting from another SC. So no, everyone was in full focus trying to race and overtake.
"That is horrendous, absolutely horrendous ... so anyway."
No need to change his line at all. Turned straight into it
It looks like (a lot, really) Ignazio Giunti; s Ferrari on Beltoise Matra at 1000 kms Buenos Aires 1971.Lucky guy
I need an explanation for how twenty cars just went full tilt towards Eau Rouge with a stopped car in the middle of the track and all of the indications that there was one coming up, That accident should never have happened
Arca brakes has infested here
Off topic, but was that John Watson as co commentator? He sounds a lot like him. Would be awesome if he's still commentating. Whenever I think of that crazy 1996 Monaco GP I think of him and Ben Edwards 😄
Yeah, it was. You should get ACC, it soon becomes boring!
When did they send arca drivers to spa?
These drivers in my sim race??
We have lit road speed limiters and countless modern electronic sensors.
If double yellow is triggered, every single car on the track should instantly receive a signal for speed limiting. Give the drivers a 10s warning and then the car is hard limited to a set safety speed until the double yellow is removed.
We don’t need to leave it to a drivers prisoner dilemma as they each wait for the other to slow, and we don’t need to leave it to a judgement call for stewards on when to penalize.
Double yellow anywhere = everyone receives hard speed limit until it’s lifted.minimizes track position loss, improves saftey.
This is very weird. they're coming out from the slowest corner on the track, road is pretty much straightforward down to eau rouge, you're going down and there should be a really good view and visibility. Flags are waving and flashing, I guess, they should and cars are just storming by. I can't believe someone is not seeing and was surpised
I think the slowest corner of the track is the last chicane where the pit entrance is. But yes, that one is super slow too.
That straight that leads up the hill thought is very-very fast, 5th gear in a GT3 easy
Must’ve been his first day?! I mean how the heck does that happen?!
Take that guys license!
A victim of target fixation. You can tell he was staring at the stopped car not looking where he needed to go. The car could have gotten around it no problem but he didn't keep moving left
Races like 24hSpa or Le Mans should be reserved to professional driver.
dude why not slow down jeez that last angle was insane
Wow. Why were they going green under a pretty big crash? 🤯
Yellow means full throttle right? Pretty sure...
There must be a reason why so many drivers didnt see the double yellow. Surely they didnt all ignore it on purpose. They came through the hairpin, then you have cars directly in front of you blocking your view.
Those guys need a long break.
I really wanna who is the super extremely talented racer who was driving that Porsche which crashed
“That was horrendous. So anyway…”
Yo this could have been a fatal accident easily, we got so lucky folks. At least 10 drivers did not pay attention to the yellow, did not slow down at all, unacceptable.
The race director was sleeping or what? After seconds every driver has to be informed about hazards on track. Cannot believe so many cars have been driving too fast at this point
Drivers completely ignored double yellows!!! Some drivers need to be punished as this could have killed someone!
Guys. I cannot understain how theses brave guys can be still FLAT OUT, when you got double yellow flashing everywhere....
Not acceptable.
Fortunately everyone is ok.
Makes my blood boil. Middle of the track with yellows flying and cars seem to be progressively going faster?
Terrible case of ignoring yellow flags
What were the drivers doing?!?!?! Double yellows out and still going full speed!! Lad stuck in the road could've died!!!!

iRacing levels of skill
Why were so many drivers ignoring the double yellow flags and going at pretty much full speed?? There have to be some penalties after this. Its unacceptable. This accident was bad and could easely have been a lot worse.
why did NOBODY slow down?!! Can't they see there was a YELLOW FLAG being waved?!!!
I forgot it's 1924...the drivers don't have radios.
"You FOOLS. Do you not use your eyesight, do you not realize that there are yellow flags around the circuit, have you not read the rulebook that says when there's a hazard in the circuit?"
poor communication,
had this happened at night, we would have been mourning for some drivers
True
Someone please remind me what double yellow means. Was it:
a) Track is partially blocked, drive slowly and be ready to stop at all times
or was it
b) Just slam down on the accelerator and blast down the racetrack at full speed
I'm easily confused.
Baddest race driver in the world
Always that 1 guy
When we see F1 race directors delaying cautions for competitive impact I suppose we should not be surprised to see drivers doing the same, how sad.
How the F… something like that can still happens today?
It can and it will forver be able to happen. What's also happening today is that the drivers are walking out alive and uninjured. 30 years ago we would all be spamming rips here.
With clear display of double yellow flags AND on the screen AND each driver's dash, you can't fix talentless drivers. Welcome to the world of GT Racing. Also what was the team's race engineer doing???
So we just ignore yellow flags now?!
Damn those last few and especially the one who hit need to be banned for the season for ignoring double yellows, that's horrific
How could this happen?!
Some are saying it should have been red flagged, but if the yellow's had been followed we wouldn't be here discussing a nasty incident.
HE CHANGED THE DIRECTION LAST SEC COULD'VE GONE STRAIGHT WITHOUT COLLIDING COMPLETE AMATURE RACING
Every single one of those drivers that ignored the yellows should be banned from racing for the rest of the season.
Throw their race engineers in there too and have the race director fired for not hitting the VSC button when it was clear there was a car stranded on track.
The FIA is losing patience with Spa and it will disappear from race calendars if there are any more fatalities.
Why did the porsche turn rather than going between him and the pit wall? Did he think the mclaren was braking too hard?
Split second decissions at 200 kmh should be reserved to pros only. Imo these pay drivers need to go asap. Also nothing would have happened if the yellows were respected.
WHICH driver's WHAT is okay?
Wtf was that Porsche thinking???
It looks like double yellows mean floor it
Why is everyone flying by under FCY?!?
