- Behind the Scenes: How Our HAAS CL-1, HAAS ST-20Y, and DMG Mori Sprint 20 Swiss Lathes Drive Our Manufacturing Process:
Since we now have a DMG Mori Sprint 20 Swiss turning center in addition to our HAAS CL-1 and a HAAS ST-20Y lathes in our facility we thought we'd update you on what we're using each machine for and - perhaps more importantly - what is the difference between a lathe and a mill?
Perhaps the most important aspect that a lathe brings to the table is its ability to set up automation. When operating a mill, if you want to put material inside the machine, you have to physically do it yourself - though it can be done using a robot. With a lathe, we can put a full bar of material in the bar-feeder which allows the machine to cut off individual parts without the need for someone to intervene. This level of automation is a huge timesaver.
We’re Building a Watch Company with Custer + Wolfe and giving you an inside look into what it takes to manufacture and build mechanical watches in America. We want to bring you along on all the successes, failures, innovations, and inventions that go into American manufacturing and watchmaking. Follow along as we restore vintage pocket watch movements and give them new life with Vortic Watch Co., and as we build a brand new watch company from scratch, focused on making high-quality American-machined watches.

Machines have come a long way from the days of 30 foot leather belts turning them. Less chance of loosing you arm. LOL. Can't wait to see some parts being made.
It woud be interesting to see some parts that are made on each currently used production machine.
We are actually trying to do that very thing this week with filming, stay tuned! Thanks!
