Awesome techniques, the difference when you just look at the end result is huge, especially when you see the before picture!

Mel, that stippling washing technique is genius. I might try it on my miniatures cause it looks so damn good.

The term for the lighting your describing when it bounces round the atmosphere is global illumination. I love overcast days as the lightings so diffuse there's very little in strong shadows. Plus you can get out and take photos to use as Textures for 3d. Ok so you get funny looks taking pictures of concrete but saves buying texture libraries.

Interesting analysis of light, Mel! I've been doing a lot or reading and video watching concerning lighting for still photography. It is surprising how the photographic lightning and painting techniques (and analysis) can be similar.

I am looking forward to more of your videos, Mel. Thanks for your answer.
BTW, I am a modeler and not a miniatures gamer. (I had an active interest in board games like those from Avalon Hill, SRI. Game Designers Workshop and others.) I find you presenting very interesting and useful material for my modeling interests. : )

what I was taught was to paint the entire model black, gray from a 45* angle, then white from directly above. at least it works on figures, lol. also known as zenithal highlighting.

I was thinking you could turn house upside down, do the black same way you’d do the white from the other end - that should catch the areas that would be darkest in real life (I.e under top of window sills, under roof soffits etc. Dunno, never tried it but it looks like it’d work in my head ;)

That looks pretty much good to go already! Do you plan on adding any foliage like dead shrubs, moss on the roofs or rocks or roots sticking out the cliffs? would love to see that but not sure if youre going for a completely lifeless tundra kind of thing.

Brilliant stuff, mate! I've learned so many new terrain techniques from your videos, I think my bean is gonna vaporize... The videos from SALUTE and other shows are very inspiring - not just the size of the boards, but the creativity of some of the exhibitors and the different ideas that their boards generate - just amazing.
I have never put together any MDF kits, but I noticed that there are a lot of visible tabs at the joints where walls come together, roofs are supported, etc. Do folks not fill them in or cover them over? I saw some kits from Dark Ops that looked great, and almost no tabs showing in the unpainted buildings. Any thoughts or insights?
    Cheers!

It's a common problem, some companies handle it well, some don't, generally I just cover them over mate

Got me confused for a bit early on... cause in photography warm light (sunset/ sunrise) is more flattering and preferable. Forgot I was watching a terrain video.
