  • Affordable Walkable Cities: Baltimore, Maryland
    We will look at cities that are just plain underrated. We will focus on specific neighborhoods that are walkable and bike-able to services and amenities within a reasonable distance. The 15 minute city in America?
    What actually qualifies as Affordable? We will be looking at cities with average rent and median home sale price.
    What qualifies as Walkable? The entire city doesn’t have to be walkable since that’s unrealistic but they must have at least several neighborhoods with a good walk, bike and transit score. The goal is to find an area within the city where you can absolutely live car free.
    The car free lifestyle is realistic in Baltimore. It’s more dense than Pittsburgh and Cleveland and has decent public transit options like the Metro and Charm City circulator.
    Baltimore gets overshadowed by DC and Philly. It suffers from a lot of negative headline news but the city is improving, albeit very very slowly.
    Charm City has earned its name. They’ve done a wonderful job of preserving the old storefronts and classic architecture. There is an old meets new feeling everywhere you look.

    I love Baltimore! Incredibly walkable, rich history, and gorgeous neighbourhoods. Charles Village is my favourite for sure, the beautiful painted lady rowhomes are iconic

    There are so many good restaurants and local shops in Baltimore, and it is very easy to walk around. The transit situation is lacking though - the buses have the most uncomfortable seats compared to other cities, and the existing train system is very suburban commuter-oriented, so there are definitely too many cars in a city that wasn't built for them.
    There were plans to build another east-west rail line called the Red Line that would have served city residents better, but it got shelved by the previous car-friendly governor. A revival seems to be in the works now, so things could improve a lot in the next decade.

    I live in DC but prefer Baltimore for many of the reasons you mention in this video! Baltimore does have it's problems but it really is special and has many fabulous neighborhoods.

      Love to hear that. DC is definitely missing something. Hard to put my finger on it, exactly.

    Also, not sure if you’ve heard of or visited Frederick MD, but it is undoubtedly the most charming and beautiful cities in the DMV. I’d contend it for most beautiful city in the country too, in fact

    Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan.

      Yes and the bike infrastructure is sorely lacking as of now.

    Pound for pound I would argue that Baltimore has the best bus system America. Hopefully the Red Line will be a reality soon as well

      If Baltimore has the best bus system in America, then that wouldn’t be saying much, because America in general has terrible bus service, and I personally think Baltimores MTA bus service is mediocre at best, with the staff shortage resulting in buses not showing up when they’re supposed to, as if a 30 minute frequency is too much to ask for.

  • @mklinger23
    @mklinger23 Před rokem +4

    I feel like philly is a hug upgrade from baltimore. You do pay for it, but it's not that much more expensive. Definitely think its worth it. You're also more centrally located in the northeast corridor.

      Philly is better. Is it a better value than Baltimore? I guess that’s the real question.

    Am I the only one who doesn't think these are "affordable" ? A studio apartment is listed at over $198K. That seems crazy to me!

    • @cities4ppl
      @cities4ppl  Před 10 měsíci

      I guess anything less than the average would be considered “affordable” but perhaps not a great value.

    Mobility matters.
    Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel.
    Reduced transportation costs and fossil fuels free transportation.
    Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed with solar canopies generating free energy from the sun.

    I would say Baltimore is a lot like the residential areas of D.C in general. Also Towson is honorary Baltimore urbanism across the county line in a suburb.

      All very much depends on what neighborhood and lifestyle you choose. I could dig having a place an hour or so outside of SLC for the recreational activities and weekend road trips available.

      The media will create its narrative and trick everyone in believing a place is unlivable.
