There are a total of 24 different flavors of MRE at any given time (They sometimes rotate flavors out). And within those flavors, sometimes the contents change. Sometimes you'll get Zapplesauce (Caffeinated apple sauce), sometimes you'll get Blueberry and Cherry Cobbler. So in reality there is a variety of MRE. Sadly, you only ever know the main course in each one!
You have to understand that the French army is rather small manpower wise in comparison to the United States and Russia so it will cost less to give them quality MREs.
In general: the composite crystals have higher advantage over the traditional miniature open half because most of the high thermal energy is mostly exothermic and overwhelming majority percentage is encased in cardboard/polymer pouch
