👴 Old Composer Reactions 🤘
KARNIVOOL has the ability to separate themselves from other prog bands (obviously they are their own band) but they have such a unique mainstream sound with complex rhythms and songwriting. It's so cool.
The drummer, Steve Judd, always manages to come up with amazing parts, like they all do
Geebz carrying the mantle with Karnivool reactions for everyone else to follow. Been waiting for this one. Thanks Geebz! Maybe "Simple Boy" or "Set Fire to the Hive" next.
I definitely recommend Set Fire To The Hive, or even Roquefort. Cool rhythms and super catchy hooks
I love love love Set Fire To The Hive. Yes please!
I'd love to see him react to Synops
although I love them, I think it's better to react to something from assimetry, they are more layered
Deadman is amazing too
Roquefort is wicked, would love to see a reaction to the version with the horns
Impeccable timing, I'm seeing these guys play tonight alongside Cog. I've not seen either band in several years and I'm stoked for it!
Next weekend for me!
Oh man! Quite a few Australian bands I'd love to see together. Karnivool and Cog of course, but also Dead Letter Circus and for the death metal flair, Be'lakor. If I could get them all to come to North Carolina, USA haha
@@plantdesigns7889 Dead Letter Circus and The Butterfly Effect are two more bands that I saw countless times during that late-00's/early-10's heyday. Often I'd see them on the same line-ups
Sydney Monolith? Or Melbourne?
@@russellcharlton7814 Sydney 👌🏻
I would say Karnivool are the perfect blend of Tool and Dead Letter Circus. Progressive and odd-metered whilst using beautiful melodies ethereal charm.
I'm watching them live in exactly 18.5hrs and can't wait to see how far they've come in 5 years. Am also watching PLINI and COG tomorrow as well. Killer concert 🤟
WAIT WHAT. WHAT A F#$%ING GIG MY GUY THAT SOUNDS AMAZING
Mate dead letter circus are rad. I tried to get geebz to watch big ages ago.
dead letter circus latest album is their best, they are really showing off their instrumental dynamic range and abilities now, i gotta listen to it again now lol
Beyond jealous! Hope you have/had a great time!
And sleepmakeswaves! been envious seeing all the posts for that on instagram
My favorite Karnivool tune! The drumming is really one of a kind. Such a dope band.
Mine too! Great beats!
L1felike is one of my favorite Karnivool songs. The beat, the lyrics, the entire song is just purely amazing.
Me too! The bass fills and that melodic break in the middle with the harmonics is awesome
@@ethanreed5815 and we can't forget Synops. That song.....love it
Scarabs for me. Vool being Meshuggahesque.
Karnivool has a fantastic live version of this song on the "triple j" channel. Its a more mellowed out version. To me its such an organic performance that brings me great joy. It's a blast just seeing them all next to eachother jamming out.
I'd love your reaction to that(performance starts at 1:15). But really I love all of their music, so any Karnivool reaction at all makes me happy.
I've literally never heard of this band, and I'm usually a huge nerd about this stuff! That's what I love about this channel man, you cover so much interesting shit that nobody else is talking about.
On that note, if you wanna hear a prog song that is unlike anything you've ever heard, I would strongly recommend Dance by Cellar Darling. Probably the only song you'll ever hear with a guitar solo, flute solo, piano solo, and a hurdy gurdy solo.
Edit: Just noticed you HAVE covered one of their songs before that I somehow missed, great choice too, you really are the best music channel on youtube.
Welcome to Karnivool. So many great songs to choose from but some of the best…Cote, Shutterspeed, Synops, Goliath, All I Know, The Caudral Lure, Deadman
I saw them live about 3 weeks ago. I kid you not, they are as good live as they are in studio.
@@russellcharlton7814 spot on, seen them a few times in Adelaide although some time ago. Incredibly powerful and LOUD 😎
The crash cymbal is extremely precise! Use it to switch between counting the 1/16 notes as 123-123-123-123 or 1234-1234-1234 - ir if you prefer, switching between 4x3 beats and 3x4 beats in each bar.
Geebz FINALLY another Karnivool track! PLEASE do Sky Machine. It’s been in my request list for you since your first Karnivool reaction.
YES, YES YES
You should react to the live acoustic play through they did of this for triple J. You might find the beat isn’t where you originally thought ;)
This song swings so damn hard when you think of it as a triplet groove
More people need to listen to Karnivool!! My favorite band!!!
Man I love Karnivool and I love your reactions to them! Everything, the vocals, the rhythms! Damn, what a band! Speaking of "dayum-Bands": Next in line (pleeeeaaaaase :D) The Sky Is Red by Leprous, preferably the Baard Kolsted drum play-through (which still lets you hear the entire song super clearly, not just the drums! Perfect for your format! ;) ) All the best from Germany! :)
I'm goin' to look them up have you heard Mars volta
Karnivool is absolutely the loudest band I've ever seen. The first time I saw them was the last time I ever went to a gig without hearing protection. Thankfully most music venues in Adelaide sell foam earplugs but my ears were ringing even with them.
Karnivool hasn't been to the US in a long time, so they're one of my grail groups that I still have yet to see live. Great musicians all, and Steve Judd is an amazingly overlooked drummer. I could see how the off-beat hat and snare shuffle could make this sound complex, and I'm not 100% sure, but I just count it in 4/4 with that pumping kick. As a drummer of 30 years, I have a real tough time with some of Judd's grooves. The pulse of Change Pt 2, with that kick in 4 and hat in 5, REALLY throws me off.
Seems like 12/8 to me
That chaotic feeling is exactly what they wanted cuz if you watch the music video to it, its about humanity dying out from a cataclysmic event.
New Day... do it!!! Will change your world!!
That ambient pad sound is guitar using a swell pedal, amazing sound
Yes!!! It always warms my heart seeing Karnivool getting some love.
Yay finally back to one of the prog GOATs ☺️
Still gotta do their song 'change' I think?
Since I'm early I'm going to throw in an extra recommendation for leprous: nighttime disguise!
I'm sure you have a massive list with those on it somewhere anyway but it can't hurt to nudge right? I just know you'll love them both.
Awwright!
czcams.com/video/ITucIquSZdY/video.html
Glad you're still enjoying Karnivool! And well done for spacing it out instead of burning through their catalogue 🤓
Yes!!! Recent subber an I was going ask you did these guys so awesome
Even after listening to these songs for years and having some knowledge of theory and production, I often still find things I never noticed or thought about in the music. Always interesting to hear the perspective of somebody with a lot of background in music approaching these songs
Karnivool are incredible. Awesome compositions. Amazing live sound.
As for the rhythmical complexity making you feel a bit lost at times, I think that has happened every first listen I have with their tracks, but upon repeated plays, my brain adapts and revels in the genius / insanity.
Happy guys are getting recognition. They are unacceptable underrated.
I love this song, my personal favorite of theirs. The first 7-8 times I heard it I misplaced the downbeat with 1/16 note. I learned the song like that, knew the whole thing by heart. Then suddenly one time it clicked into place, and I understood where the downbeat really was. For a few listens I could switch back and forth between the two, but now, now for the life of me I can't get back to how I counted it before.
Me too man.. Me too (it’s sad, I miss that mindblowing)
Karnivool forever
Thanks Geebz. Long time Karnivool fan from South Australia. But I’m losing patience… almost a decade since their last album. I know lead singer Ian is busy with Birds of Tokyo but personally I prefer the musical brilliance and power of the ‘Vool😎🇦🇺
From Western Australia
A KARNIVOOL reaction!?!? Hell yeah. If you haven't already, you should give C.O.T.E. a listen. That track is absolutely incredible.
If you ever get a chance, watch their live blue ray for sound awake. You won’t be disappointed, I preordered a signed copy when it came out, it’s amazing!
Such a good band, the singing is really what sets them apart from other prog bands to me. It's like Dream Theater, except every song is close to being a ballad.
This one was very heavy on the bottom end, I like it!
Karnivool is one of my new favorite bands that I only started to hear like last year. Thanks, Geebz!🤙
Thanks for this. My favourite band from Australia as I’m an Aussie 🇦🇺. Hope you are doing well Geebz
You MUST listen to Aeons by Karnivool. It is their true masterpiece. The only song ever to make me shed a tear without even understanding what the lyrics are about, the arrangement is just THAT powerful. The live studio session they did for it as well is a must listen, arguably better than the studio version.
Yes!
Ghost city session especially
GEEEBZ - I saw Karnivool last weekend in Australia! They were awesome. Now - for a suggestion for something I have a feeling NO ONE has mentioned before and is pretty unknown, Can you please check out "The Perfect Symmetry" by Demians. I have a feeling it will be very much your thing.
Anything Karnivool is cool! Awwright! Still here, chilling home after work!
Love this song, funny the notification for this video came at the same time I was actually listening to the song on my own 😄 This band should be more known, it’s so good.
loved the ending
Karnivool started out much more alt-rock/almost nu-metal. Check out Roquefort for a less prog more catchy song with trumpets. Or COTE which is one of my favourites
Agree. Themata is a brilliant album, from beginning to end. I keep going back for a listen.
Great song to see you react to... and the impression it left you with was perfectly articulated 🤘🤘 KARNIVOOL are currently headlining the Monolith Festival on the East coast of Australia with iconic Aussie prog gods COG and a slew of other progressive magnates (including PLINI) in this wonderful melting pot of musical wizardry that is OZ. I've mentioned COG on this channel before as surfers from Bondi who cut a definitive groove in Australia's progressive scene. I'd love to see you react to 'Bitter Pills' or 'The Middle' ❤❤❤❤
He's got a reaction to Cog on Patreon
@@dodgrblu Oooh!
I second the request for COG, as a close second I will take some more Vool. These Perth boys can do no wrong, saw them in the late 90's as they were starting out and grow to become a powerhouse of the scene.
Bring on next weekend!!
Thanks Geebz. I'm going to see Karnivool live (5th time) next Saturday for my birthday. They did an INCREDIBLE acoustic version of this track on Triple J, worth looking up. Would love to see you do their track "New Day". Keep up the great work.
This is one of my favorite songs by them. There is so much going on I always hear something new when I listen to the song. The video for this song is interesting.
my babies.
Awesome video bro!! Mahalo
How about you add some drone footage??
This track does a sneaky on the listener when first hearing it. The instinct is to listen to it as like a 3/4 beat with 3 crotchet/quarter notes as the main pulse and that's reinforced a few times such as in the post-chorus, but it's actually 6/8 with 4 dotted semiquaver/eighth notes as the main pulse.
Exactly what I thought!
😅
Let's gooo. This album is so much slept on. Check out Aeons and Nachash from the same album. I would love to be enlightened what's going on rhythm-wise in the latter one lol.
More Karnivool is awesome
Saw them live last week. Awesome to say the least!
Oh man that bass! Sick!!! Very cool rhythm once the song picks up. I can jam to this
Right??
Love this song, love the band. Great reaction.
The Butterfly Effect - Aisles of White
Get started with another great Aussie alt-rock band.
oh yeah!! or The Cell
Yes!
Please check out Shutterspeed, Cote, and L1fel1ke by these guys. L1fel1ke especially blew my mind. Awesome bass playing
One of the best fade outs
I will repeat it forever xD please do some Dance Gavin Dance stuff ;P (Tilian Era)
Must be time for a Karnivool discussion vid! Plus, set fire to the hive 😎
You should check out Cog, ideally something from the new normal. Another band that is Australian prog metal royalty
Hey man seeing you are doing Aussie Prog Rock. Try
The Butterfly Effect
COG
Dead Letter Circus
You won’t be disappointed!
Karnivool such an awesome band!
FKIN GREAT SONG!
Got to see this live last week when I saw Karnivool 😍
They played a festival here with another fave band of mine- Cog.
You have to do some Cog too. Please!
This album is stuck in my car's cd player, a year later I still play it through start to finish
I'd love to see a reaction to "Simple boy" by Karnivool and the cover of "Sleeping Satellite" by them aswell, it's an amazing cover and sang mostly by the Guitarist who has a brilliant voice 🤘
I've been waiting for you to get to this song since your first Karnivool decomposition... Thank you! Along a similar naming convention, can you do Dead Letter Circus, "I Am"? Australian prog is wonderful.
Geebz, I've known Drew the guitarist a long time. He & (Ian) Kenny the singer started the band together in their high school days. Back then Drew was the drummer & Kenny the guitarist. That later changed. Their main influences were: Tool, Meshuggah, FNM/Mr. Bungle, Stone Temple Pilots, Primus & other cool alternative 90's bands.
My favorite band!!
AM War another great song from this album, highly recommend
Oh they were definitely going for the insecurity and out of balance feeling, they chose the album title Asymmetric for good reason haha. It’s an apocalyptic album
Thank you Geebz
This is 12/8 (or triplets in 4/4) shuffle-kind of a feel from beginning to end. It's just that the four on the floor bass drum is drowned in the mix, and it may cause the illlusion of 16th note subdivision in 3/4 instead of triplets in 4/4 (or 12/8).
This album is epic! Love this song!
Karnivool? Hell yeah!
The end of this song is VERY disorienting! Love it!
Absolute tune
Crazy how its still 4/4
Another great review, as usual! Please check out Within the Ruins, they are a super unique sounding band. A great song to decompose would be Deliverance although they have many others.
This whole album has that same feel you were talking about at the end.
Ooooooooou now THIS is pod racing!
Funny how this is my alarm clock tune 😆
EDIT: you should listen to their acoustic version of it, a very different experience.
Aeons from that album! Strangest song construction but its awesome... literally no chorus 😎
Stopped it just before "the peoples elbow" kicked off the next song!
watch the youtube video: *"The 'ONE' that got away. "We Are" by Karnivool"*, from Yogev Gabay if you're interested what is going on here. :) It's basically some 3 over 4 magic and imo this is some next level rhytmical illusions stuff. :)
play anything the Themata album ,L1FEL1KE, Sleeping Satellite, amazing cover ,Themata, Roquefort, ect cheers mate.
Geebz, I HIGHLY (get it?) recommend their acoustic version of this song on Triple J for one of your acoustic reactions!
Hey! Really enjoying your reviews ❤️ I would love if you could decompose “Takatak - Fault Lines” enormously talented prog metal band from Pakistan...YES..I know right?
Many of us Aussies here in the comments... I think that many TOOL fans go looking for other bands that have that TOOL sound. Nobody will ever match them, but bands like Karnivool end up becoming something 'other' and become fantastic in their own right. A band with a similar sound is Wheel. Perhaps start with something from their first album, called Vultures.
Obligatory recommendation to feature the Australian band COG on your channel
I love Karnivool but this album is definitely harder for me to get into because it has so many songs without a clear structure or easy rhythm to follow. All of the prog stuff I like has always been tricky but their stuff on the Themata and Sound Awake albums have a little more clarity to me. I totally get what you mean.
Themata has several kick ass, almost pure hard rock songs on it. Still sounds like Karnivool but there's a lot more of a pattern to something like Fear of the Sky.
Synops is a great one by them!!
Namaste
Please do some Charlie Robbins next or soon! Either "Coco" or "Let Us Dance", or both!
You gotta get to "Spinning plates" by Radiohead. You'll dig it for sure.
Agreed we need a Roquefort react!!!
Great ending and how things stripped away. The vocals kept the right feel which could've easily been ruined
song SKY MACHINE next please u wont regret it
Try "All it Takes" by Karnivool. You won't be sorry.
You need to do New Day and Simple Boy by Karnivool, please??!?
The chaotic style of this song is a feature of the Asymmetry album which I personally didn’t like as much as previous albums Sound Awake and Themata that had monstrous grooves and hooks. I struggle to remember many of the tunes on this most recent (but now old!) album. Still good music but not to the same Vool standard imo
Right there with you. All It Takes was one hell of a single, so I’m hoping their next album will be a return to their groovy, hooky sound.
What time is it there when you did this reaction Geebz?
If you're looking for something a little different, check out a song called Dance, by Myrath.
@keyofgeebz please review Oceansize - Trail of Fire. if you like Karnivool, youll love it!
