- Hi All today we are talking all about the 1987 movie Mannequin. Mannequin is a 1987 American romantic comedy[1] film directed by Michael Gottlieb and written by Edward Rugoff and Gottlieb. It stars Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall, Estelle Getty, Meshach Taylor and G. W. Bailey. The original music score was composed by Sylvester Levay. A modern retelling of the Pygmalion myth, the film revolves around a chronically underemployed passionate artist named Jonathan Switcher (McCarthy) who lands a job as a department-store window dresser. The mannequin (Cattrall) he created becomes inhabited by the spirit of a woman from Ancient Egypt, but only Jonathan can see that she is a real person.
Mannequin received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for its main title song, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship, which reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. In 1991, a sequel to the film called Mannequin Two: On the Move was released. Though the sequel takes place in the same department store in Philadelphia, only actors Meshach Taylor and Andrew Hill Newman returned from the original film.

This movie taps into so many things I fantasized about as a kid. (And still do as an adult) Getting free reign of a department store after everyone leaves and being able to pick out as much merchandise as you want! Dress and makeup and purses, oh my. And of course Andrew M is there to keep you company. ❤️

Kim Cattrall is 6 years older than Andrew McCarthy she was 30 when this movie was filming and he was 24.

Thanks for this recap! It can be difficult to recap/describe 80s movies because the nostalgia factor is not something everyone “gets”. You are doing a great job! Is this the best movie ever? No. Is it fun in an indulgent, silly way? Yes! Can’t wait for the next episode!

That store is really cool ! When I was growing up it was called Wanamakers...we lived in North Jersey so going to the store was like an all day event ... heading down to Philly, shopping all day and then dinner at Ground Round lol - good memories with my parents there 😊

I liked Mannequin 2. Not as much as the first one, but I used to watch it all the time at my grandma’s when I was a kid so it is a lot nostalgia for me.
Such great memories.
The lamp behind Roxy when she called Johnathon, the fact that Rambo is deathly afraid of mannequins (especially Emmy), that amazing montage, how amazing Kim looks, it’s just so fun.
