How to Avoid Fin Rubs When You Bodyboard

  • A bit of a fun spoiler on a bodyboarding trip is a fin rub. Here are some invaluable tips to avoid them ruining your Bodyboard Holiday in the future.
FINS THAT ARE SYMMETRICAL WITH A BOXY SHAPE AND FOOT POCKET ARE LESS LIKELY TO RUB. FINS OF THE ‘CHURCHILL STYLE’ THAT ARE ASYMMETRICAL ARE MORE LIKELY TO GIVE YOU RUBS.
So it’s worth carrying a symmetrical style fin with you on a trip in case your normal fin rubs.
THE MOST LIKELY PLACE TO GET FIN RUB IS THE TOP OF YOUR FOOT OR UNDER YOUR ANKLE. So monitor these problem areas and stop the problem before it starts!
IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET A RUB, MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT A COMPEED PLASTER IN THE PLACE BEFORE THE RUB APPEARS. Prevention is way, way, way better than trying to cure it once it starts.
ALWAYS APPLY THE COMPEED PADS WHEN YOUR FOOT IS DRY A GOOD TIME BEFORE YOU HIT THE WATER (WE SUGGEST AS LONG AS 12 HOURS AHEAD). The earlier that you get the pad to stick and the longer that it is stuck on before you hit the water, the better it will generally stay on.
CHECK YOUR FEET AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN BODYBOARDING AS IF THERE IS A SMALL RUB BEGINNING TO HAPPEN YOU NEED TO ACT QUICKLY. Keep a close eye on the skin being broken. That is when the trouble will begin.
IF YOU HAVE A BAD RUB, THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH IT IS TO CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT TYPE OF FIN. So try to always have a spare with you.
FIN SLIPPERS WILL HELP TO STOP THE RUBBING BY PROTECTING THE CUT FROM THE FIN. So always pack fin slippers or if you don’t mind wearing them, use them all the time.
HEEL SHIELDS WILL PROTECT YOUR ANKLES FROM RUBS CAUSED BY YOUR FIN STRAP. So use them if a rub is beginning.
SEWING NEOPRENE IN PLACE WHERE YOU GET THE RUB CAN HELP THE PROBLEM OF A SPECIFIC RUB. It will protect your foot in the key area and should stop the rub getting agitated and becoming worse.
IT’S POSSIBLE TO SUPER GLUE PLASTERS IN PLACE IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GETTTING THEM TO STAY ON. SEEK A DOCTORS ADVICE REGARDING THIS. A well positioned plaster is worth its weight in gold if it stays on.
IF YOU GET A FIN CUT IT’S IMPORTANT TO MANAGE IT. KEEP IT CLEAN, USE ANTISEPTIC AND MINIMISE THE AMOUNT OF DIRT AND GERMS THAT ENTER IT. They won’t get better on their own so keep managing them until it is better.
DON’T LET A FIN RUB RUIN YOUR BODYBOARDING TRIP, DEAL WITH IT EARLY.
You can buy 3mm wetsuit socks here which will stop rubbing and keep your feet warm.

For warm water use thin 1mm socks

Rob, great video! A nasty reality of bodyboarding on regular basis. Dealing with a painful fin rub right now! Going to try the Compeed blister plaster. I have never liked the feel of fin socks, but you offered some great on alternatives to avoid having to turn to a fin sock I never thought of.

FIXOMULL is a woven cloth bandage tape that is the best thing to use on a fin sore or any reef cut... Use antiseptic on the wound first then use Fixomull which comes in a roll of different widths. leave it on until it comes off.... days/weeks...It gets wet... doesn't matter...pat it dry after each surf and shower... It keeps the wound clean...allows it to breath...and you'll find it heals the wound twice as fast as leaving it uncovered or using a non breathable bandage and with half or no scarring ... I use it on all cuts and wounds... A Plastic Surgeon who was on an Indo boat trip put us onto it...AAAmazing stuff!

In the sock department, Wetsox in the US sells socks intended for use under wetsuits--helps get them on and off easier. Likely useful under fins. I've been lucky not to have problems.

I wish i had seen the video before. Hope, someday after this pandemic also to visit Newquay again, still my favourite place, with Towan beach and Fistral are the best. Ciao, thanks :-)

When you buy some new fins i would go home and put them on your feet for a while and if you start to feel any hot spots return and find another brand. Everyone's feet are different sizes need to find a fin that fits yours the best. I used to have the Dolphins style fin , brought them home and put them on after a little bit my feet were killing so i returned them and found another Style...

I had an 11 day swell on a trip around Australia in the 90’s the same swell that hit the east coast, the same one they made the bodyboard movie ‘WARPED’ with no less than 2 and up to 4, 2-2/5 hour surfs everyday at a place called ‘potholes’.
Sick wave multiple reef breaks in the same bay..
11 days of barrels and my feet looked like Swiss cheese. Alsace’s on both feet, on one bone was showing on 2nd toe,...
I couldn’t get anytime to heal and I had to surf it😂😂
coulda used a few of those stick on rubber buddies.

Over the past 30 years of body surfing i’ve used waterproof medical tape around my toes, it helps for about an hour but if I end up going in twice that day I get fin rub on the same 3 toes on each side, I’m still looking for something to stop it. I use duck feet extra large and I have a 11 1/2 inch foot so it’s about 1/2 inch too small, I can’t get use to the super extra large; they are too heavy and come off too easily. I’ve tried other fins but i’m too use to duck feet...Vipers don’t hack it. Is there hope?

The thing is once you have a cut , if you go in the salt water all the time it becomes ulcerated, the best thing to do to prevent this is to keep it as dry and as clean as possible until its completely healed (about a week or 2).

    • @danielvelascocampos1900
      @danielvelascocampos1900 Před rokem

Not sure if still valid but stealth fins are one of the best if not the best when talking about propulsion. They are very stiff and provide a lot of speed when paddling. On the other hand they are the worst when talking about rubs and blisters... I used to have a pair but went back to the churchills.

I am not talking about the force fins for Diving, they have a Special pair extra for Bodyboarding. I was just referring to the fin rub issue, not which fins are the most powerful. I had Churchills for ages before, caused me a lot of cramps and blisters after intense boardingss sessions for hours in the water. The neo- socks helped avoiding that issue though. Then I decided to get me a pair of force fins- bodyboarding. To get the power out of the force fin shape involves different muscles as usual. After I got used to them, i managed to get the power out of them. But one Thing is for sure to me: They are really comfortable and dont cause any issues.
