- Hello đ
Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.đđ

You are making some cracking videos. Your drone work is beautiful and you choose lovely music to enhance the beautiful scenery. Canât wait for the shearing video next, Sam.
@barkinmad2296 oh brilliant thanks đ glad its good
We drove down from Scotland earlier today and the weather looked pretty bleak in your neck of the woods. That would have been about mid day.
Little britches looks as if she's in good form though.
Interesting initial shots from the drone. Something else in the air there.
@dalemarsh357 it was hit and miss but stayed dry for us. Just cought it !! But I went wrong way with the up and down đđ€Šââïž

Haha yes she thinks she's a sheepđ€Łđ€Ł thankyou
your lucky that cow stands still to the new calf......sometimes the cow is not happy until she's nearly killed the strange calve......have to keep them in for a week or so to bond. we're having a bad a week .......lost 2 cow's to red water and had a 3rd one get it but she got over it and is fine again. we've never had that trouble before the vet say's it 's caused by Ticks
Not good !! Never heard of red water.yes she will be in for a while must be because she's out of a dairy cow đ€Ł
@@Sam-shutt yes the reason it's called red water is because there is blood in there urine ......there is treatment for it but it doesn't seem to be that effective......never a good sign when there's blood coming out of places it shouldn't be coming out of. hayho that's farming for you
Great video Sam
đđđđ

@@bobcrawford2105 thankyou đ
Very nice
Some great lambs in them, Sheila is flying it
She's a prođ€Łđ€Łđ thanks !
I always loved helping gathering on my friends' Perthshire farm. Seeing your drone footage is great, gives a real feeling for the size of the task. Good dogs are essential, along with the quad bikes and buggy thing. I can't imagine doing it all on foot...it must have taken more people to do it.
Sheila is too young to know about gathering but you can show her this in future. Starting young.
@jimmyjohnstone5878 used to be all on foot with a few more people. Glad you enjoyed đđ
great camera work and another great video
Thaaaaankyou
Well done
Thankyou đ
Lambs looking good, good luck with cow n calfđ€
Thankyou going well so far
Great Video Sam, New Sub here, thanks for sharing
@tonymckeage1050 welcome to the gang! Thanks for the sub! Hope you enjoy
It's not all about new things anyway the little lady don't seem to mind what she in it. Won't be long before she running around with your other little ones đ
@@paulleaver8820 absolutely does the trickđđ on yess won't be long đ€Ł
Oliver will kill penny for been in the way. Some amazing drone work sam. Could you keep more sheep on the fell that only ye are grazing at the moment. Some great looking lambs. Is there a set amount of time you can graze the fell? Would ye not keep the cows that are still to calf on a smaller place with less grass. That would help the calves not too be too big been born. Great video as always. Bring on the shearing
good one Sam love the drone shots was just thinking how would farmers manage without quad bikes take care all Rx
Yes was all on foot once over !
â€
I can just hear Oliver ⊠that bloody ponyđđđđđđ
@heather8303 haha yes he was shouting ons or 2 words but my music coverd it đ€Łđ€Łđ
With any luck, once the calf has had two or three good bellyfulls of her milk, the cow hopefully will smell her own milk in it`s dung. Do you get to do or are you allowed to do any hill burning in the spring??. That looked to be a very good calf for a "set on".
Sam how are you doing ? Evrything oké i HOPE?
@@marjoleincrevels9120 yes wonderful thankyou
Lovely drone footage, aircraft interference at the start?
@@143topline haha unfortunately I went down instead of up đ€Ł in excitement
Why are two dogs tied to each other?
@rickykane1493 because the huntaway is a young dog, not a year old yet so he's learning the ropes so tied to another dog slows him down a bit and keeps him close to hand
So sweet sexy young lady sam the 5 of you have 1200 acre each on wildboar fell still a hell of a lump of ground in my shepherding days i used to park the quad up and walk the hill as you couldn't hear any lambs blaring to be back with their mothers again so I never used the quad unless I really really had to use it darling and I had fantastic dogs with me darling xxxx
Are you between hawes' and kirby Stephen?
@@stephenduncan1663 correct đđđ
@Sam-shutt did a bit of work up there for waders and black grouse. Used to be a conservation adviser. My patch being that end of the YDNP. Now hill farm in Donegal
@@stephenduncan1663 Interesting! Thankyou !
dont be burning your wool this year
Decided to bag it this year seen as price has risen slightly but the farmer still looses out đ€Ł
@@Sam-shutt ill pick it free
đ first
Oh, by the way i never did see ponies and sheep getting on.
đź600 thats alot of sheep! Do you sell your wool for extra income?
Ha ha , it costs more to have them sheared than what you get from the wool market board . If Only farmers could make a profit .
@cheryldowner4834 same as what Alex said. Wool board made a profit of 3 million last year ! We burnt ours because it wasn't worth the deisel taking them to the wool board!!!! This year price gone up slightly so Peter wanting to bag it. If it was up to Oliver again it would be geting burnt again.
@@Sam-shutt can't say I blame him....while we live on pennies.
@@Sam-shutt im fairly sure if british wool makes a profit its past on to your wool cheque british wool competitors like to take trade from the british wool auctions for a lower wool prices so they can have a bigger profit margin
Your main delivery man đȘ so you will no. But last year prices were shocking and that's what there profit was.... lot less sheep about as the years go by with these schemes so prices should increase but they don't.
