Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

good job there guys......everyone mucking in to help even grandma with the lovely homemade pies etc........you wouldn't want to leave the kitchen door open for long if i was around i'd soon be in having a slice or two of homemade pie😀. interesting about what you said about years ago how the wool would pay the rent.......the wool barely pays the shearers for shearing the sheep nowadays they say
@@geraldbeard856 it would never cover the shearers. Prob get around 300 for all this. But we will see 1000 plus for shearing that day!
Shearing is hard work. I have only done it once and was able to take my time on just twenty sheep, but they were strong Blackface ewes who all knew I was a beginner. They didn't cooperate.

Great story with all of you pulling together. Baby Sheila lulled by a bleating lullaby. A treasure of a mum. Just enough exposure of the children helping out. I don’t know why more shearers don’t save their backs using a harness. Oliver is a bit out if date, Herdwick wool was only of any value when army blankets were in demand WW11. I expect you are all heaving a sigh of relief until the next year. I think you deserve more subscribers, well edited and entertaining footage.

What happens with the wool. Over many years the price for wool has dropped.

Can wool not be used to insulate as a bi product
I think for new homes today Glassroc is used?
Anyway wool is used in making of carpets and clothes and many other things

@joanne26 absolutely 💯 and yes wool isn't worth anything really. Eventually they can sell wool jumpers for hundreds of pounds .😒🤢 farmer always looses out!
That wool not swept off the board would drive me insane
Do you clip a lot of sheep? I could only do around 100ish a day if that 🤣🤣
@@Sam-shutt enough, shore for 12 years, in New Zealand, you wouldn’t get a stand doing 100 a day
@chrisoconnor5880 oh no I definitely wouldn't 🤣 we used to clip ourselves but took us 3.... days to do them all. Worth every penny shearers 💪💪 my sister used to be married to England champ Adam berry. He went to New Zealand aswell

Take it to a depo or drop of site. Not sure. Up to Peter this year wherever he wants to take it. We will find out when we take it

Given the price of fat lambs, then your stores will be good to sell, especially if they are not too far off fat. Im guessing £115-120, just going off the video.
@FarmersSss fat has dropped 30-40 pound hear so not hopeful about the day ! Prob weigh 30-35 kilo I would think.
