My dad, a lifelong "buy American" guy, bought a used, low mileage 2000 Frontier around 2009, because his 07 Silverado was a gas hog and too much truck for his daily needs. He loved it! In 2012 he bought a brand new Frontier, in 2014 he added an Xterra to his fleet, and in 2016 bought another new Frontier, a crew cab 4x4, simply to get power windows, which the '14 truck didn't have (he had severe arthritis by then). He passed in 2018 and left it to me. Good truck, but I traded it for a full size, cuz I tow a lot.

It had 150,000 on it at that time and still ran perfect. It never had any repairs done on it except a mass flow air sensor (other than maintenance and consumable parts like brake pads). I replaced it with a 2013 that now has 105,000 miles on it, and had to my first non maintenance repair on it two days ago. The ECU relay went bad, and it cost a whopping 7.00 to get a new one. We went to a Nissan dealership in Jersey City, NJ where a family friend of ours worked at. My dad and I fell in love with the truck. He had it for 18 years until 2019 when he traded it in for a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. It was especially useful for him since he's a contractor. He was looking at getting a Chevy Silverado but chose the Nissan instead. Never once did that Nissan Frontier ever have a problem or any kind of mechanical let down. It was a solid build vehicle and back when Nissan still made reliable and long lasting cars. Any Nissan that is derived from the Frontier or Xterra platform especially from 20 years ago will last forever if you take care of them. Best car he ever had.

On some newer vehicles though, you do have to take them to the dealer to be programmed, because they need to clear the previous remotes and reprogram them again (usually using a different code). I mean it's fair if a locksmith says they can't do it or they can't guarantee it, but you shouldn't have to pay them if they aren't sure. If they say they don't think it will work, but will only make you pay if it does, thats different (although very few people do that). But on more modern vehicles (made in perhaps the last 5 years or so, and especially the newer ones that may have push-button start) you have to generally take them to a dealer and have the dealer do it. On some vehicles, like the GM trucks from 2009-2013 you could do it yourself (program the keys and the keyfobs). And I think part of this is by design and for security. If people could read online how to reprogram a car key fobs it would make stealing modern cars more easy. I'm not saying it can't be done but they have made it harder for people to do that.

My dad bought brand new 07 by 4×4. The lifters went out 4 times less than 9 months. He was so mad he gave it back to the dealer an almost went to jail for straightening out the Nissan service manager. I'd never buy one

Sorry Scotty. I'm sure there are some good examples of Nissan's here and there. My cousin was a huge Nissan fan. He owned a Nissan Truck before Hard Bodies came out, he owned a hard body later, and then he bought a Frontier when those came out. EVERY SINGLE ONE HAD ELECTRICAL ISSUES. Granted, the motors were pretty strong. I am impressed with the power they provide. But I wouldn't touch a Nissan with a 10-foot pole.
I used to own a DATSUN pickup... little 4 banger, single cab, bench seat with a really long stick-shift we called the knee-knocker. I loved that little truck. Simplest vehicle I've ever worked on. I would consider buying one of those if I was given half a chance. But otherwise, no. No Nissan's.

I have a friend who is a Lexus technician. He had a 2006 Sequoia that had the rotting frame issue. He took it to the local Toyota dealership for the frame recall, but the dealership didn’t have the equipment for a complete frame replacement. So, the Toyota dealership sublet the repair to be done at the Lexus dealership, and my friend (the vehicles owner) did the frame replacement himself. So, not only did he get a new frame on his Sequoia, he also got paid 38 hours to do the job.

Had an '86 Nissan V6 pickup when I was in HS. That was back when you got a truck because you were broke. How things have changed.

@1:28 at least that rotten frame wasn't as bad as the 90's F 150 that I literally seen split in half today when a truck filled with a load of scrap metal came down the hill & hit the divot in the street, the bed was pushed into the cab on the left side......I just told the driver drive it straight to the scrapyard & scrap it with his load of metal.....only the right side of the frame & the driveshaft was holding it together, but it's only a 2 mile straight drive to the junkyard 🤣 just go slow

You've been kinda crapping on Nissans as far as I've seen, but I absolutely Love my 2019 Frontier SV 4WD. 4.0 liter v6.

Good to hear that. I want to buy a 2018 Tacoma, but they’re too expensive. Maybe a Frontier.

By the way, I have a 2012 Rogue. Transmission broke with less than 80k miles and no warranty. Just over the warranty of 75k. Bad luck! Had to replace it and for now it’s good. Holy crap!

Well, I bought it November 2019 from Enterprise Car Sales for $26,500 with 17,600 miles, and I've been driving the everloving CRAP out of it. Circumstances have made me the only licensed driver in a house with 3 working adults, myself included. Now, I'm sitting on 79,300 miles and the truck is handling my lead-footed driving like a champ. So far, my only issue is the driver side window control has a short or something, and doesn't operate my window unless I'm careful. I'll get around to fixing it someday.

There was a few problematic years for the frontier. The radiator would leave allowing coolant into the transmission

The Titan has that exact same issue. Replaced mine with an aluminum rad. I'd recommend that upgrade on a Fronteir as a pretty important mod. It definitely runs cooler now too when I'm working out in the desert with the AC blasting.

Tell me about it. Had to put a new transmission in my 2005 frontier when it only had 60k miles. Wasn’t happy about that considering Nissan wouldn’t cover it.

My mom had a 96 Pathfinder with the exact same engine. That car lasted us 10 years and 185k miles. The only reason we had to get rid of it was a blown head gasket and our mechanic told my dad he wasn't going to take anymore of our money and told us to get a new car.

Scotty, I just love your reviews. Thank you, I will probably buy this truck based on this review and some other research, just as I bought my 2000 Land Cruiser after watching your review on one of those. I love the Land Cruiser, and did my own timing belt water pump. 😅
